It also holds events such as the Lisbon Book Fair. My husband and I walked through this park when we were on vacation. We enjoyed our stroll.

Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. After a long day of walking around, my legs and feet felt like spaghetti. That's why it's nice to take a break throughout the day and relax a little bit. That's exactly what I did at Jardim de Estrela. This is a large park with plenty of trails, vegetation, and benches. I took advantage of the beauty and meditated here. Beyond the sights, there are several statues throughout the park to check out and learn some history. There are also a bunch of ducks and geese that hang out by the lake. The geese are huge! I'm not sure what they feed them in Portugal but we're talking mutant geese. If you're willing to hang out with mutant geese, this is a relaxing spot to spend some time at.

The employee is one of those few Portuguese that plays dumb as soon as they hear a word of English. My husband is American, I'm Portuguese. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

The park dates back to 1969 which is well after the passing of Calouste Gulbenkian. It is over 19 acres in size and has two lakes inside. Interestingly, the Spanish Embassy used to be here! Jardim do Torel has three entrances, all of which are easy to pass right by. It's locked at night,…read moreexcept when they have special events there on summer weekends. The view is nice, although not as clear as at some other miradouros. It's also not as crowded. There are shady spots up top, as well as lots of space for sunbathing on the large lower (middle?) level patio. Unfortunately, the quiosque at Torel, which is tucked out of the way in the middle level, has been closed for quite some time now. Last summer they set up a food truck on weekends, but usually you need to bring your own food and drinks. The lack of a quiosque also means there is no bathroom. While I've seen plenty of people go in the bushes, I prefer the Goethe Institute bathrooms (which also has a garden with a cafe). It would be nice if the freguesia opened the public bathrooms in the park attached to their building. There was some viral post claiming that the lower fountain, which is pretty big, is a swimming pool. It is not a swimming pool. It's a fountain. It's like two feet deep. No one is going to stop you from going in either fountain, and I've seen plenty of kids playing in both, but neither is large enough to swim in. Nor is there any sort of filtration system like a public pool would have. And, quite often, one or both fountains has no water at all. While they don't have swimming pool, beer, or toilets, Torel has a nice view, lots of benches, and ping pong.
