Aside from lap swimmers, the leisure side of the pool complex was a mix of preschool-aged kids and retirees soaking in the large jacuzzi. There is a shallow and large wading pool for kids to play, a lazy river with a quieter small pool in the center, and then a large hot tub. The jacuzzi and wading pools have a stairs as well as a gently sloped ramp for entry, which is an inclusive way of building a pool as well as fun for the kids. There are a few toys available (balls, pool noodles) and plenty of life jackets for the kids. There are a good number of lifeguards who seemed reasonable. I didn't use them, but there is also a steam room and a sauna. Large locker rooms have plenty of lockers, changing rooms, shower space, sinks, and toilets. Soap is provided but no other products (shampoo, lotion).

Good - 10 visit punchcard ($54.00 + GST) - this is the cost with a Be Active Pass card - 2 squash courts and 3 table tennis tables - Squash league ($18.00 to spare (up to 3 games), $63.00 for part time (up to 8 games) and $147.00 for full time) - Large multi-purpose gym for volleyball, badminton, basketball, soccer, etc. - Multiple drop-in times for sports (ie. Friday volleyball is very popular) - Less than 10 minute walk from the Metrotown skytrain - A couple of EV charging stations ($2.00/hour) Bad - Archaic booking system (no online booking system available. You have to call to book a squash/racquetball court) - Half the time when you call, staff doesn't answer - Downstairs weight room is cramped - 1 combo court (normally used for squash or racquetball but they currently refuse to move it) - 50% of the time the men's shower facilities don't have body wash You get what you pay for at Bonsor. They made false accusations, shouted at him without cause, punished him with arbitrary "time-outs," and consistently treated him with disrespect. Their behavior was not only inappropriate but also harmful. As a parent, I find this completely unacceptable. Children should feel safe, supported, and encouraged--not shamed, blamed, or bullied by the very people entrusted to care for them.

I've used all their facilities except for the skating rink (so I like to think I'm a fairly reliable source). You can pay drop-in for gym and/or pool for $7.50 (yep, you can use both facilities in the same day if you want). Gym isn't huge but there are still enough machines/benches/treadmills to go around. You could totally do a full workout without waiting your turn (unless it's after 4 on a weekday, aka peak gym hours everywhere). Pool is one of the best in Vancouver, given that it's new and has a lot of features. A good number of swimming lanes, leisure pools, a lazy river, 3 diving boards, a big hot tub, a sauna (that is not so big) and a steam room. Showers are fine as far as public pool showers go (the curtains don't fully shut but still better than UBC's) and you can bring your own lock for the lockers. I love that there's a library because I can head on over post-workout and enter a different kind of calm, zen mindset as I peruse the shelves. Whose idea was it to attach a library to every community centre (and can we get more of that, please!)? There will always be something to gripe about with every community centre (sometimes there are way too many people in one swimming lane and I'm not sure why they don't open up another), but as far as Hillcrest goes, it has a lot to offer. A really great place to hit up all the facilities in one stop, or to bring the kids along for a fun-filled, athletic and/or academic weekend. Also, the staff is GREAT and so kind. Kudos to them!

So my biggest complaint about this place is people from other countries that don't speak english do not seem to have any respect for anyone but people from their country. My sister and I had no problem finding a free rack. And of course it had all the other things typical to a gym-- free weights machines etc etc. But what did it for me was the full kettlebell set! I love kettlebells and was ecstatic to be able to do my kettlebell exercises at the YMCA as well. After our workout, we had yummy protein shakes as recovery drinks. Perfect end to a great gym session. I recommend this gym to anyone who's going to be visiting downtown Vancouver for any amount of time.

The price is quite steep at $75/month. The price also varies depending on the type of membership (corporate, association etc). For a non-profit organization I think the price should be the same for everyone. Also, they charge a joiner fee and 1 month membership fee to cancel. I don't think they should charge a cancellation fee - things happen in life and you shouldn't be penalized for moving or changing jobs. The facility itself has options - there is a pool, showers, fitness centre, women's fitness area and 2 exercise rooms for classes. It is a very busy and well used location. I haven't tried the personal trainers, but have observed them training other people. They seem very knowledgeable and pay a lot of attention to the people they are training. If you do decide to come here and can afford it, it looks like it would be worth it. Personally, I didn't enjoy any of the classes. They are very full (30-40) people (except for spin and a few other classes that have equipment limits - still at least 15 people though). People also come late. This makes it very hard for the instructor because they don't know what to expect. The classes are good for beginners, but don't always match the description. Some of the instructors aren't open to feedback and will suggest taking another class if you provide feedback. The gym equipment is decent but not as good as a newer Steve Nash. They have most of the things you need but no kettle bells. In summary, the location is excellent and the centre has options. Because of this, it is VERY busy. The crowd here is your standard community centre crowd, so it's not intimidating and everyone is friendly.

yesterday I was at the rec center for some therapy. I use…read morethe steam room, hot tubs and therapy pool. I also do rehab on my shoulder in the tiny lap pool. I was in the steam room and two guys came in. One was 'training for a fight' and had to lose 5lbs in a day and made sure everyone in there knew about this. These guys started barking orders at people, and talking at people, that didn't want to be spoken to. I asked them to please be quiet in the steam room because the staff never did anything about it. At first I asked the lifeguards (3 different ones) to get a handle of the situation. They didn't. So when I asked these young men to please be quiet. I got an earful of insults. "why are you such a c.. " " you miserable human being" " when was the last time someone .... you good" "you must be depressed, you should just die" and the list goes on.. (the irony is I am clinically depressed, and this is not what I need at a community rec center) Not one single staff member or lifeguard took control of this. I left there.. more miserable than I did walking in. This is a facility for therapy, this is a facility for family and kids.This is a place for people to come and relax, and you know. rehabilitate.. it's what it's meant for. This is not a place for professional trainers to come to and start barking orders at other patrons to follow suit to his needs I am completely turned off at how the staff handled this, and that excessive talking and loud mouths are even ALLOWED to be acting like that in a steam room, or just act like that at the facility. I didn't come here to listen to your life problems. Not only that I was insulted over and over again until I had to remove myself from the situation. So I never got to do my physical therapy I am required to do right now for my shoulder. IF the guy was trying to lose 5 lbs in one way for a fight. This to me sounds like a personal problem, and someone didn't do their proper training. Instead we all got stressed out by this guy that wouldn't shut up about himself and his needs the entire time. He's probably not going to do well on that fight either. You can't lose 5 lbs in a steam room in one day. I might never come here again and take the longer journey to west van rec center just to avoid this awful experience/feeling and the fact that the staff doesn't do anything about this reckless behaviour.

NVR should be ashamed of themselves for bleeding parents for more money. One mom spent over $100 to have their child splash in the tot pool while waiting for their brother. Shame on you north van rec. for being utter bone heads over a kids splashing for 30 minutes. Bring your wallet to north van pools where common sense does not exist.
