I went here for my annual eye exam, like I have for years. They dilated my eyes and my eyes were uncomfortable the rest of the day, which I expected. What I didn't expect was that the next day my vision was blurry and my eyes were in significant pain. I called and was told to use eye drops. I did, and it only got worse. The following day I went to a different eye doctor and was diagnosed with an eye infection. Based on the timing, I have serious concerns about sanitation and hygiene practices at this clinic. I won't be returning, and I recommend going elsewhere. read more

Think twice before you decide to get your eye surgery here. The doctors are good but the office treats all patients like numbers, not individuals. It's a factory - designed to shunt through as many patients as possible.It's disorganized and rushed - the staff doesn't follow up with your questions or when they do call they have no idea who you are. You are just some nameless bill-payer. As well they take too many patients so your doctor may give you only a very short rushed ocnsultation where you have to decide on the spot on which procedure to have based on VERY LITTLE information. Then a scheduler calls you and rushes you to commit to a surgery date.Their object is to "fit you in " My advice:. Find an ophomalogist that has a private practice. Don't go here. read more

My experience with Minnesota Eye Consultants was that of being a cog in a factory. My eye doc recommended Dr. Hansen for cataract surgery as she felt he was the best. It never got to that point. My initial appointment was 40 minutes late. Eye testing is done not in private but a big room with other people being tested, also. Then another 20 minute wait to see the surgeon, who spent three minutes talking to me. This may a routine thing to him, but these are my eyes and I'd like to have a conversation if someone will be messing with them, please. Trying to get answers to questions is a ridiculous process. No matter what it is, you have to leave a message with an initial person who supposedly forwards you to the actual person you need to talk with. I have never gotten a call back from that second person, and have spent a minimum of a week (usually more) trying to track down answers. Follow-up appointments made by Minnesota Eye Consultants with my original eye doc have been made incorrectly. They were so messed up I finally just did it myself. There has been more, but I won't go into it all, just to say I've had my fair number of surgeries and have never run into such incompetence, EVER. Am in the process of trying to cancel my surgeries with these folks. Running true to form, been waiting four days now. Think I'll just send them a letter, copying my insurance company so they don't try anything funny. read more

If I can save one person from having a terrible experience like I did, it will be a blessing. My first visit to see Dr. Nicholas Schmitt was on March 12th, 2026 and after checking in I was led to a waiting room (with no receptionist) where I waited 20 minutes and then an assistant took me into a room for a Peripheral Vision test which took about 20 minutes. When that was completed, I was returned to the same waiting room. Again, I waited another 20-25 minutes when finally, a male assistant finally showed up to take me to a exam room. When I mentioned the long wait to him, his reply was "well we are very busy this morning" in a rude tone. I then waited another 20 minutes for Dr. Schmitt. He looked at my eyelids, read the results of my test and explained the surgery quickly. Total time with me about 20 minutes. My surgery was scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2026 and was informed that I would be called with the time of surgery the day prior. The nurse that called me with the time of surgery was very nice and answered all my questions. She informed me that my surgery was scheduled for 1:30 pm and gave me pre-op instructions which included; nothing by mouth after midnight and no water after 12 noon. As I was preparing to leave for my surgery, I received a call saying that the doctor was running late and the surgery would now be at 2:30 pm. At this point my frustration started because of no water intake. My daughter was with me when we arrived at the surgery center at approximately 2 pm in case we got in earlier. At this point the wait started. The reception nurse was leaving at 3 pm and so we were left alone in the waiting room. A nurse finally came to take me back to pre-op at 3:30 pm. One of the surgical nurses was rude and very frustrated that she had a hard time placing an IV in my hand and I mentioned it was due to no water since 12 noon. And it is worth mentioning that I have never had any issues with an IV line prior to this day. The doctor came in and spent about 10 minutes going over after care and I finally went into surgery at 3:50 pm. At 4:30 pm a nurse went out to tell her to get the car. Now mind you...we were initially told that I would be in recovery for an hour and I would receive some water and a snack. That did NOT happen...not even a sip of water. This was 40 minutes after surgery and a nurse was taking me out to the car in a wheelchair at 4:50 pm. I was hardly lucid and I was shaking terribly. When my daughter mentioned that she is not okay and that we should go back inside, the nurse said, 'no, just get her some fluids and a snack and she will be fine". I WAS NOT FINE!!!! This was all because it was late Friday afternoon and they were all ready to leave for the weekend! read more

Been waiting for six weeks to get my cataract surgery scheduled at the Minnetonka clinic. I get that it was the holidays and getting in before year end wasn't going to happen. But it took three weeks past my appointment to hear from scheduling. Then it's just been constant telephone tag. They say you'll hear back in two days. Bases on phone call history it's taking much longer. If you call the main desk they just route you to the same voicemail you left a message with. I just read that I need a pre op physical at least two weeks before. Plus I have to plan around eye shots with my other doc. And finding someone who can drive me. It just seems like a shit show. I'm completely losing faith in this practice. Which is disappointing because the initial office visit seemed to go very well. If there is something preventing the appointment from being scheduled mentioned it when you leave a voice mail so patients can manage their expectations appropriately. read more

This is a surgery factory, do not expect any attention to your history or time with the surgeon. After waiting months for surgery was called less than 24 hours before and told I had glaucoma and would need stents in both eyes. Forever regret this surgery as sight is much worse than when I started. read more

I have read some scathing reviews for Minnesota Eye Consultants. I feel bad for those having a negative experience, but hasten to mention, my experience was not at all the same as yours. My surgeries were on the 9th of February and 6th of March. Dr. Hansen and his team(to many to mention and I do not want to forget anyone) were outstanding, caring, competent and concerned with me as the patient. The evening call from Dr. Hansen after surgery assured me of his concern for my health. Left a message to reschedule an appt. never returned my call. Do not go here for contacts. They were unable to do cataract surgery and advised contacts and glasses. Ordered one contact since I only need to correct vision in one eye. Paid $450 for one contact! Scheduled an appt but had to reschedule which was a nightmare because OD only sees patients 2x week in Minnetonka. Got an appt for class to learn how to insert contact and dr appt 6 weeks after I paid them due to scheduling. Wish I had gone to my last surgeon in San Diego. I will not return. 2/1/18 Got my contacts. Needed the class on how to insert and clean, maintenance. Seems complicated and I wore contacts for over 20 years. I hope I can get this. read more

I was seen by one of the cataract specialists who told me there was nothing that could be done to help my vision being blocked out because my cataracts weren't bad enough, and weren't the cause, anyway. He never explained what it was that was blocking out my vision, just shrugged his shoulders, said he didn't know, and told me it was up to me whether I want to continue driving or not after I explained that twice I nearly ran over pedestrians because they were blocked out of my vision. Then he only wrote a partial prescription for new eyeglasses, and said I'd have to make a second appointment to get the rest of it from a doctor that could write the portion for the prism I need to correct my strabismus (misaligned eyes). Say what??? I thought this guy was an MD! TWO appointments to get a full eyeglass prescription? That's ridiculous! I ended up going to my regular optometrist (NOT an MD) to get the full explanation as to what was blocking out my vision (proteins, or floaters, that discolored with age, and do not actually float, rather remain suspended in the vitreous fluid in the eye like fruit in Jell-O) because he could actually see them when he examined my eyes. Then he was able to write the full prescription I needed for glasses. Either the MEC doctors are lazy, their medical school training was severely lacking, or it's a money-making scam by the clinic by forcing you to make more than one appointment for a full eyeglass prescription. I would NEVER use this clinic again. read more

A few years back had cataract surgery w/ MEC. After 3 yrs. had to go back for laser surgery to remove a film that had developed. This took me 5 visits - the first (where I waited for ;over an hour to be seen and had to find someone to see me) then they did assessment and said I definitely needed the surgery. Made appointment for surgery, waited another hour after my appointment time, then saw dr. and was told I needed the surgery - ,make another appointment for same. Came in for surgery and after another hour wait ( with eyes dilated) finally was called in. By that time I was so angry (blood pressure 250/200) they said they wouldn't do the surgery due to that. Told them the reason it was so high was I waited so long and was very angry and they were GOING TO DO IT!!! Doctor came waltzing in, did the surgery in about 5 min. and left. Will never go back there and do not recommend them to anyone!!! read more
