Hookin' Ain't Easy Seafood

We've been in the area for 11 days, and this was hands down the best meal we've had. We came with a…read moregroup of nine, and every single person loved their food. The blackened grouper and snapper were perfectly seasoned and flaky. The shrimp was crisp and fresh. The lobster tail was tender and sweet. The hush puppies and fried okra were hot and delicious. Even the sides, broccoli (so so so good), slaw, and onion rings, were done right. You can tell this is real Florida seafood. The handwritten menu, the fresh seafood market inside, the casual outdoor seating with string lights ...it feels authentic, not touristy. But the best part? The owner, Matthew. He was welcoming, kind, and clearly passionate about the restaurant he and his wife have built. After the hurricanes, they've lost many repeat local customers, and businesses like this need visitors to show up. If you want fresh seafood, generous portions, fair prices, and a true local experience in the Treasure Island area, this is the place. We'll absolutely be back, and we're telling everyone we know. Support local. Support family-owned. They deserve to thrive.

I looked forward to my meal at Hookin' for months. I have never eaten blue crabs from the shell,…read moreand I love whole lobster, so I thought that deconstructing another type of crustacean would be fun. I got off the bus and walked across the street and into the parking lot. It was fairly busy, and I made my way to the patio area, because outside seating only. There was a kind of tiki bar with a line where you go up and get your own alcoholic beverage any time you want. You can eat at the bar or at any of the picnic tables that you pass on the way to a kind of food truck with a window where you order your food and buy bottles of soda and iced tea from a vat full of ice. I loved the vibes right away. I got in line at the "truck". Then it was my turn to order. Well, whaddaya know, they just ran out of blue crabs! And no soft-shell crabs were available as the water they live in is not warm enough yet. But they did have one of my favorite seafood delicacies, stone crab claws, so I ordered those instead, and asked for the mustard sauce instead of melted butter. I also ordered French fries and cole slaw for my sides. And then I ordered one-half dozen raw oysters, because. I was given a little wire stand with a card inserted into the top with my order number on it, to be placed on my table. Then I sauntered over to the bar and ordered an IPA from the busy, bearded and well-tattooed bartender. If you are wearing shades you will be admonished to remove them before paying, and I saw why, as the display on the... pay thingy has excessive polarization. Next I found a good spot in the shade and sipped my beer and checked the place out. Was there music? I think so, but I can't remember! Just all kinds of folks having a good time. Two preschoolers were busily playing in the sand by the main walkway to the food line, and took up most of the path most of the time, but nobody seemed to mind. If you aren't into playing with little trucks in the sand I think there is also corn hole off in one corner. If you don't know what that is, I dare you to look it up. After not too long some plates of food showed up, and I took some pictures and then got busy. First I tried the fries, because they are best when fresh and hot, but the fries were limp and sad. I just let their little ol' hand-cut selves alone. The oysters were served on the half shell on ice, and came with nice hot grated horseradish and cocktail sauce, plenty of lemon wedges, and saltine crackers. They were excellent! Then I turned my attention to the claws, glorious stone crab claws. I noticed that I was given butter instead of mustard sauce. That didn't stop me. But what did slow me down was the lack of a claw-cracker. The claws were pre-cracked a bit, but not in a way that was helpful to get at the meat. And I need leverage to rip the joints apart as my fingers don't work like they used to, so I asked for, and received quickly, a cracker. Some of the claws were on the small side, and the meat in some of the claws was a bit soft-feeling, but it was all pretty tasty. However, they fell short of my previous experiences elsewhere, including when I cooked some at home a few years ago. The cole slaw was very good. The young guy who brought my food and cracker tool was friendly, and quite funny. The woman who took my order was also nice. The bartender was just to busy to be anything but awesome. So all in all, the food was a bit of a letdown. I will try to go back for the crabs, and I saw hush puppies in a photo, that would be better than the fries.

Pleasant Surprise finding Welton! And when I say surprise, I mean surprise - found it on Yelp but…read moreyou're not going to see it from the road. The restaurant is located behind the German club on 66th Street, a second business in the German club parking lot! Apparently, the family that has his place is from Maine and they got a lot of success brewing beer. That's success led them to start the restaurant serving seafood from a family business in Maine. We started off with a bowl of New England clam chowder and a dozen oysters. To what are whistles we got a glass of their tap Chardonnay and a beer. My wife's Chardonnay was ridiculously good! But nothing could beat those oysters - sweet with a little bit of brine, and very fresh. For dinner we got a lobster roll - they come hot or cold, with the hot coming with melted butter. We also got the fried haddock roll.... Wow! Both were fantastic! I know we overdid it with dinner.... We even got an order of the whole belly clams. I didn't think anyone in Florida served those down here! Absolutely ridiculous . In short, we had fantastic dinner and terrific beverages. I really recommend you at least try to find the place - we almost didn't go in because of its awkward location and the fact that no cars were outside. We saw the place was open and decided to have a appetizer because the Yelp review was so strong, and I'm glad we did! I told the two people there they should park their cars nearby so patrons would see them..... Anyway, I'm going back again, but this time I'm bringing friends!

I was sad they didnt have chowder so next time I'll try that and the maine lobster roll. Oysters are from Maine and they were spot on. They do an oyster special on Thursdays and Ill be back for that! Great selection of beers - they brew in house and have some other local ones. They also do flights which is great. Caylen was our server and he was great and knowledgeable. There's also ton of parking in the back. If you like good beers and maine style seafood this spot is for you!

We started with the crispy pork belly, which looked a little on the drier side when it arrived but don't let that fool you, the brown sugar bourbon glaze it was dressed in was delicious. Really enjoyed it as a starter. The tavern burger came highly recommended as one of their best dishes, and while it was a good burger, it didn't quite blow us away. Surprisingly mild on flavor despite the toppings, and it's a BIG boy... which I know some people love, but I tend to prefer a smash burger so I'll take partial responsibility for that note! The fries, however, were excellent... textured, crispy, exactly how fries should be. The real standout of the visit was the chilaquiles (the chef's brunch special). It ran a little dry, but the flavors more than made up for it. The combination of crunchy tortilla chips, smoky sauce, pickled onions, egg, avocado, and cilantro all together was just so good... my boyfriend was equally obsessed. Would absolutely order again. Service was great and overall had a really enjoyable visit... Stillwaters continues to deliver a solid experience and I'll keep coming back!

Came here on recommendation from a client and was not disappointed!! Perfect casual spot!…read more Some street parking available, although I'm sure it's competitive on busy nights! Completely outdoor space with bar, small tables, and high tops for small to medium groups! Casual, beachy vibe, with umbrellas and tastefully modern beach decor. Bartender was incredibly friendly, offered wonderful recommendations, and remembered my name throughout my stay! Counter service food, separate from the bar. Fun seafood apps and an intentional mains menu make this a great spot for a light dinner or apps and drinks! I had the daily catch, which was amberjack, citrus rub, with slaw and taters. It was a lovely meal with flaky fish, tangy slaw, and decadent potatoes! Good value for the cost! Had the Gone Fishing to drink, which came served in a themed bobber glass. Rum-forward without being too boozy, balanced with sweetness and nuance from the tea. Surprisingly elevated for a beach bar vibe! Would absolutely recommend! Top it all off with some chill live music and you have the perfect evening for this guy! :)

The prices were awesome: $1 oysters, $5 hush puppies, $5 tacos, $10 cocktails. Everyday from 4-6pm. At that price point you really can't go wrong! For us the oysters were the star of the show... were they the best looking oysters I've ever had? No. Were they amazing for a dollar each? Absolutely yes! The hush puppies were really good as well... not dry at all, perfectly done, and the dipping sauce alongside them was spot on. The tacos were a solid addition to the spread: good flavors, nothing that blew us away, but a nice way to round things out. The shrimp taco was the winner between the two, we'd probably skip the chicken next time. The chorizo creamed corn was a pleasant surprise as well, and I'm not even a big corn person! The outdoor patio has a really cute vibe too... we were there on a cloudy day and it was still charming. Would love to come back on a sunny afternoon and make a proper happy hour afternoon of it. The oysters alone are enough to bring us back. Trophy Fish has officially earned a spot in the regular rotation.

For the benefit of the doubt these things can happen but typically a Friday 615 dinner running out of several items is a bit surprising. Our friends also were told several items were not available. The grilled octopus was a nice second choice appetizer. We enjoyed it. The sauce and texture were great. We then moved onto the main course, which was a crab-cake dinner with fried green tomatoes and capers. We were told that they were out of green tomatoes. We select selected risotto. Unfortunately for this price point we were let down. It was hard to distinguish the crab with all of the other binding sauces, and bread? The risotto came out in a big clump, it was very dry as if it were reheated and not freshly made. I wish I could give a better rating. We had hoped that this would be another new restaurant on our radar however lights out on this one and on to the next. I would like to end on a positive note. Our waitress Rachel was very friendly and a good server. Nice ambience too.
