It felt very unsafe due to the extreme crowds and the constant pressure from people asking for money. Carrying a purse or personal belongings was nerve-racking the entire time. This is not a place I would recommend for shopping, especially if you're not familiar with the area or traveling with valuables. However, there are many other great stores one street before you reach San Juan de Dios with plenty of options to browse and shop in a much calmer environment. I strongly recommend going there instead.

It's inexpensive, quick & delicious. Birria was a hit, my all time favorite and can't wait to visit again for more! Staff is very friendly & welcoming, tons of suggestions.. a few tips- dress casual, try not to take out your cell phone & stay vigilant as you might experience pick-pockets. At the very top is an artisanal crafts market with a variety of decorative goods at half the price of the high-end designer crafts in Tlaquepaque's boutique stores. In comparison with the Tonala open-air market (which is open for business on Thursdays and Sundays) I found the craft items, prices, and the variety of goods better in the Tonala market. Nonetheless, the crafts section in this market has gifts/something for every taste. In the middle level you will find the fruit/vegetable markets which are always a pleasure to look around. There are also sacks of beans, and dried chillies of course. In the lower level (when you enter the market take the down ramp) is the food court with dozens of stalls for fresh iced fruit drinks, deserts, tacos, sandwiches, rice plates and combo meals. You will find several counters which offer the regional specialities of pozole and birria (the stew) and you should take advantage of their incredibly cheap prices and delicious platters. I had birria con chivo (goat stew) at the market, and it was quite tasty, served with fresh tortillas. I can't think of a more authentic everyday Mexican experience than eating birria at a market stall here.

Be sure to stop by the Trocadero antique store (just across the street from the market) to see a shop full of quality antiques (Mexican and European) at fair prices. Suggest arriving after 9:00 am since that's when most dealers are just beginning to set up. If you mention "trocadero" to taxi drivers they'll get you there (somewhat difficult to find on your own). I've never experienced any safety concerns at the market.

Lo Bueno We ordered seafood small plates from "La Muerta", tbh the best tacos gobernador I've had (we even ordered a second plate...), a very well done Michelada (which in GDL are made with clam and tomato juice) this is hard to achieve, and the aguachile encacahuatado was yumy yumy. you can see the slow traffic street from the terrace with all its people and bikes passing by, a perfect spot to heal a hangover or to look for one.
