Mini Market La Republica, tucked away on the busy mid-island commercial street of Amelia Drive, is an absolute goldmine. Opened by Wilbert Garcia and Glenys Villafaña, who are of Dominican descent, less than a year ago, this sparkling clean little market is incredibly well stocked with everything you need to make Caribbean, Latin, and South American food at home: yuca, plantains, numerous types of mangos and avocados, bacalhau, cuts of frozen meat and fish, masa, cassava flour, desicated coconut, farofa, hot sauces and spice mixes of all kinds...
There is an extensive selection of frozen goods, which I didn't get to peruse closely, since the puppers was waiting in the car. But I did pick up a package of frozen tamales dulces and glimpsed packages of frozen pupusas (which I passed on this time since I'd just picked some up from the Salvadoreña Food Market).
To its credit, the local Stop and Shop now carries a few Latin and Caribbean products (think: hibiscus drinks, scotch bonnet sauce, corn tortillas). But places like Mini Market La Republica and Salvadorena Food Market scratch a deeper itch.
