TIP: ~ Like most (if not all) Woolworths, a lot of meat would be in the "special" section, of specially marked down for meat that needs to be used soon. You can grab some very good deals here. Just the other day I got 4 huge steaks for 10 dollars total. Somebody pinch me! Ambiance: Despite the busy atmosphere of being a grocery store on Victoria Street, the staff here do a top job of keeping this place clean and being efficient enough on the registers to get rid of large queues. The result? I never feel particularly crowded and hectic at this place, despite the barrage of customers. Contrast to say, a busy Coles, this Woolworths is a winner! Customer Service: So far, all the staff have been really nice and efficient as well. As I mentioned above, they do a great job with the queues. Selection: Overall, this Woolworths is pretty large so they have a great selection of items. Like I said, I do mainly all my shopping here and it's never let me down. --- The only thing I do have to say is that even though Woolworths does have an "Asian" section, I recommend you heading over to Minh Phat next door - for Asian goods, they do a lot better job with the prices.

The staff are enthusiastic and very helpful - so much so, that earlier in the week, we rang ahead to ask if they had a particular film that we wanted to watch in their Hoyts DVD vending machine. There are always lots of vegetables and herbs that you can buy in bulk for a ridiculously small price (several clumps of baby pak choi were less than $2), and you'll also find some exotic ingredients like abalone and winter melon. If you aren't really looking to buy then I recommend you at least have a look around. Head to the dried fungi and seafood aisle - it is actually incredible. There are exotic mushrooms that resemble coral with really bizarre names (pigs ear mushrooms are a prime example) and there is also dried octopus and squid that hang in plastic bags. While you may or may not choose to buy anything to cook with any of the food inside, this supermarket is truly extraordinary and very fun to explore.

Supermarkets are big and sometimes when you can't find something, you need to swallow your pride and ask for it. Do the staff give you shit, or are they actually helpful? This particular Coles hits 2/3. It's located just at the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre, so you could do a bit if shopping after a film, quick browse at IKEA, whatever floats your boat. It's relatively clean and spacious with a wide selection inside as well. The only mark that Coles doesn't hit is the customer service. I've experienced a lot of staff members that stare blankly like deer caught in headlights whenever I ask them a question. Convenient and moderately priced! Just try to avoid asking anyone for anything.

The Woolworths in Australia is a full service grocery store where I usually find the Aussie style licorice that is more chewy than licorice you would purchase in the US. Prices are very good, the bakery is the first stop where I look at fresh baked goods and determine if I will be able to consume what I purchase before leaving the country. Your own carry-out bags are needed to transport your items if you are unable to pick them up by yourself. The store hours are usually 7 am to 11 pm daily.

I love this place because of their four vegan sandwich options: a tofu salad open sandwich with sesame and lime dressing; a bagel sandwich with a tofu and corn fritter and curried cashews, cucumber, and coriander; a tempeh burger on focaccia with kimchi and ABC sauce; and an eggplant, pumpkin, spinach, white bean, and basil pesto on focaccia. If these descriptions don't have you drooling right now, I don't know what's wrong with you. All vegan sandwiches are $11.50 and come with potato chips. This is a fair price for a delicious and rather filling lunch. Their non-vegan sandwiches aren't much more expensive either. My favorite is the tempeh burger with ABC sauce -- it's like an Indonesian sweet soy sauce -- oh man. Just the right mix of unusual but awesome flavours. There's no seating here -- it's take-away only, unless you're out front having a gelato. While you wait for your sandwich, you can peruse the specialty grocery items. They have a small but impressive collection of hard-to-find and locally-made items, such as La Tortilleria tortillas, local hand-made chocolates, jars of refrigerated kimchi, and chips made from all manner of non-potato things -- kale chips, bean chips, turnip chips.... Just be prepared for some sticker shock. These specialty groceries don't come cheap. (One of the chocolate bars was $14!!! It better be chocolate CRACK, at that price.) All in all, a great place to come for an awesome take-away sandwich with fresh and often unusual ingredients at lunchtime, and a fun place to peruse if you like your exotic, organic, hand-made/hand-dipped/hand-chopped/hand-crafted/hand-tooled/hand-whatever fancy-pants specialty grocery items.
