My son and my boyfriend and I love this place! We spent the afternoon at Mingo Creek and then decided to stop here for a late evening meal. First off, the food was amazing and very affordable! The staff was super friendly and attentive and checked on us and made some good conversation. The owner told us that they even do projected movies in the back of the restaurant outdoors! My family has been going to this establishment for years and tonight I ordered ice cream for the family and only got half my order and was asked to substitute chocolate ice cream for vanilla Sue to machine being down. Then we informed it was working again. At this point we only received not even half our order and the wait began after about thirty minutes I inquired about rest of order and was told to be patient due to staff being brand new. A nice little diary stand on the side of 136. Lines can be long, but this is one of the only places around for dole whip so I'll gladly wait. Their dole flavors change weekly, I believe. I've also had the banana split here which is huge and good! I've never had food here. The last time I was here, I called prior to going to ask if they still had funnel cakes. The girl on the phone told me they just had funnel cake fries which I said was fine. I went later in the day and ordered the funnel cake fries and ice cream for myself and my sister. The girl at the window told me they didn't have funnel cake, and I said I called and asked and was told they had the fries; I then asked if she could make sure and ask someone else. Stopped today after fishing at Mingo with my son and my fiancé. I ordered half of an Italian hoagie and hot pepper cheeseballs, my fiancé had a pepperoni pizza and my son had the cheese Stromboli. My Italian hoagie was delicious, super fresh toppings and a half alone was huge, more like the size of a whole at other places. I tried my fiancés pizza and it was really good too. I don't know what kind of cheese they use but it's excellent! You can tell the dough is super fresh too! My son's Stromboli was cooked perfectly with a garlic butter Parmesan sauce on it. It was huge and filled with so much cheese he thought it was social media worthy :) Hot pepper cheeseballs were fried to perfection... but wait there's more . Even though wee were stuffed we HAD to have a treat... I had the most AMAZING banana milkshake I ever had and my son had the pineapple dole-whip, he said it was just like Disney Worlds! I saw some reviews mentioning service, ours was excellent. Our order was taken immediately , our food was done writhing like 15 minutes and to be honest when going to a place like this it's usually first time job high schoolers who begrudgingly get a job because mom and dad said to. They are getting work experience for the very first time of their life, have patience for goodness sakes. I was out for a ride with a friend this weekend. We stopped at the Mingo Twist N Shake to recoup some energy and discuss where our ride would be going afterwards. While we hadn't expected too much, we were thoroughly surprised. He has soft serve and an Italian hoagie; I got hard serve strawberry and the cheese steak + mayo. The ice cream was great, but the hoagies really shined. The bread was toasted to crispy on the outside, giving it a crunch to the teeth, but quickly gave way to soft, warm bread on the inside. The steak, onions, mushrooms, and peppers were just oily enough that it didn't need mayo and gave it EXCELLENT flavor. My friend spoke highly of his Italian. On top of it all, the owner/operator couple were friendly to us, happy to explain their business and food sourcing, and even interested in our bikes. Beyond all that, they have a broad menu ranging from burgers and hoagies and pizza to ice cream, coffee, and even bubble tea, providing this area with a selection that most places in similar locations don't try to offer. A January day in the 40s is plenty warm enough for the dog park and ice cream. We spent the afternoon at Mingo Creek Park and on the way home we wanted a snack. We were thinking some fast food French fries, when our friend said "let's try that little ice cream shop we passed." We ordered a lot of food. My husband and our friend had one of the flips, which is a mix between a wedgie and a Stromboli, but even better. They seriously loved them and inhaled both a steak and a pizza. I had a classic slush puppy, hot dog with chili, and fries. The fries were fresh cut and the chili was pretty good too. (disclaimer: I'm a West Virginian and hot dog chili is almost a religious experience in those parts, so I'm sure this hot dog chili was great but I can't betray my hometown hotdog chili). We also had a peanut butter shake (delicious), a raspberry cheesecake sundae, and a dole vanilla coffee whip. We were discussing the dole whips with the owner and when I found out they were dairy free, she made me dole whip Arctic freeze with s'mores toppings. Being dairy free, there are usually very few boring choices at ice cream shops, so I really appreciated her effort to make something extra and it was delicious! She even gave our dogs free sundaes with dog bones! I also got a homemade apple dumpling that I just heated up at home and it was so good! We can't wait to go back to this place next weekend to try more items off the menu! read more

So it's been a year since the last time I got the Philly cheese steak. I don't know exactly what has changed, but there has been major changes-the pizza was nowhere near as good as previous. The crust was very salty, the steak was like minute steaks, and the taste was just not there. It was very disappointing, as I was really looking forward to it. This business seems to be taking no precautions due to COVID 19. No employees are wearing masks, they have their utensils and napkins outside for everyone to put their hand in and none of the food preparers are wearing gloves. In the hour and a half we were there, I saw them wipe the counter once when over 30 people had been waited on. In fact the owner sat and chatted with a friend, no mask, the entire time rather than helping her staff keep up with a long line of people waiting. Since they seem to be making no effort to keep customers safe, I have to wonder how sanitary they are in general. I won't be back. At least until there is a coronavirus vaccine. read more

I was just there and saw 6 people working. I was the only one there and no one acknowledged me for 5 minutes. I was greeted rudely and gave my order. A small cone is a SMALL cone. 2 scoops barely came out of the top of a cake cone. My banana milk shake had no ice cream in it. It tasted like blended milk. I POURED it out it was so thin. The service at this place is awful!!! We waited in a single line for 15 minutes to get 2 soft serve cones. We gave up & left. A couple before us also left saying they waited long enough! At some point within the past year, it appears that there was a change of ownership and turnover in staff. This past summer, we stopped multiple times and noticed a decline in service over what we had experienced with the previous ownership, though our more recent experiences have been better. The same menu and ingredient quality from the past seems unchanged, and the new owner appears to be working through the service issues. One welcomed change: they are no longer seasonal, but open all year (closed on Mondays). read more

My husband and I grew up on Vic's Pizza in Bentleyville, PA. Vic's Pizza closed it's doors years ago, which was very sad for the entire community. I don't know how or why, but the pizza sold at the Mingo Twist is the exact recipe, exact pizza. We live twenty minutes from the Twist and Shake, and have no qualms about having to travel this distance to pick up a pizza. It is pure perfection, and we LOVE it. it's a little pricey, but worth every penny. Their traditional stromboli reminds me of the old Brother's Pizza recipe. Brother's Pizza is out of business, so if you loved their Stromboli, the Twist and Shake if for you. The staff is always really friendly and the facility is clean. They do not accept the Discover credit card, but they do accept Visa and Master Card, so be prepared. Parking is plentiful, but gets crowded on the weekends. There are picnic tables and one table inside if you plan to eat on the premises. They are only open from late April through late October. We are such fans, that near the end of the season, we purchase extra pizza and put it in the freezer for winter. Thaw it in the refrigerator, then reheat at 450 degrees for about 12 minutes, and it's like a fresh pie. Sooooo good! read more
