Mike has had painful knee issues for years, and for many of those years, medications and injections were able to help. But by the summer of 2017, Mike was in pain all the time. We wound up cancelling vacations and other activities we enjoyed, because it hurt him just to walk up a couple of steps. Our lives got smaller and smaller, and Mike spent more and more time on the couch. Because we are only in our early 60s, we realized that this could be our lives for the next 30 years! Like most people, we have healthy concerns about surgery, but decided this was no way to live. We met with Dr. Rojer and together, made the decision for total knee replacement. We selected a date for surgery, and Dr. Rojer's experienced staff took it from there. The segue from Dr. Rojer's office to Trinitas Medical Center (and beyond that, to post op care and rehab) was seamless. Much to our amazement, Mike was up and walking around the patient floor with his physical therapists, three hours after surgery! When he was discharged from Trinitas, an at-home physical therapist and a home nurse arrived on our doorstep the next day. We didn't have to make any of the arrangements! Surgery and recovery went so well that we scheduled his second knee replacement, and that went just as smoothly. Mike finishes his last week of physical therapy tomorrow, and for the first time in years, he can walk pain-free. We have already made travel plans to take full advantage of that fact. She is dying. The care she has received since being admitted has been exceptional. Kind, caring, compassionate and competent. Everyone on the floor has gone out of their way to make sure that my sister is clean and comfortable. They have turned her so she does not get bed sores, changed her when she has wet herself, and gone the extra mile to make sure that her family members are welcome and comfortable. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness and compassion during this very difficult time.

Here I go anyway…read more While navigating healthcare in the United States of America generally is, and probably always will be, an absolute nightmare, all of the personnel and staff I've dealt with (with only a few exceptions) at NYP Brooklyn Methodist have been outstanding. I became a patient in the Advanced Maternal Fetal Medicine department after my pregnancy became complicated, and every doctor I met with exerted an impressive level of care, patience, and compassion as we navigated a very frightening and emotional experience. Our baby was ultimately delivered early but totally healthy- and all staff in the labor & delivery unit and mother / baby unit were also wonderful. We now have follow-up appointments regularly with pediatric speech and OT. Not only are the therapists extremely kind and wonderful to work with, they are helpful with scheduling appointments, insurance navigation, and referrals. The quality of human beings working at NYP is exceptional, and I only hope they are granted the compensation, the support, and a work environment that allows them to continue doing excellent work for their patients and community.

I signed up for an annual physical, during which I had my blood drawn. I received quite a shock when I received the bill. In addition to charges for the physical and blood draw, I received charges for a second office visit, an after hours visit, and a mental health assessment, none of which I consented to. I called the billing office and asked for an explanation. They said the after hours charge was because my visit was at 5 p.m. The mental health assessment because I filled out a paper mental health form (which was never discussed with me). And the second office visit because I asked the doctor a few questions about my health. I explained that I had never consented to these extra services. They removed the after hours charge "as a courtesy" (like they're doing me a favor or something), but said the other charges stood and that my consent was not necessary. It took three and a half months and six phone calls, but finally the billing office agreed to the drop the charge for the second office visit, again "as a courtesy." One false charge remains, but I'm not contesting it because insurance covered the full cost. In any case, I certainly won't return to this medical office, and I urge everyone else to avoid it as well.

I needed someone to treat a recurring elbow injury that I had let slide from "general aches" to "complete immobility" over the course of a few months. Normally I'm the type of person who ignores injuries and hopes they'll resolve on their own--and sometimes they do! However, when my arm just refused to heal, I scheduled an appointment. In the past I've been to different PT's around NYC to address other injuries that wouldn't heal (broken bones etc), and typically a session is about 20 minutes of manual therapy and 20 minutes of stretching on your own while the PT works on someone else. Dr. Rick, however, spends the whole 50-60 minutes assessing your injury, finding the root cause (in this case it was my neck and shoulder causing my arm to malfunction), and manually working on it. I didn't sit in a corner half-heartedly stretching while my appointment time ran out! Dr. Rick really dug in deep (pun intended) for an entire hour, assessed my movement patterns carefully, and gave me additional movements for at-home therapy. Within 2 sessions my elbow was back to full-range of motion. It's a fantastic thing to be able to access Dr. Rick's deep body of knowledge just by making an appointment (his impressive list of certs/degrees is online). For any type of injuries or performance issues--I can't recommend Dr. Rick highly enough!

I have been through physical therapy before and I've worked in a PT office; I can honestly say that I have never seen another therapist more attentive to their patients than Dr. Rick. Each session you're greeted with a warm smile and genuine interest in how you're doing, but from there it's down to business. Dr. Rick works with you to not just solve whatever is ailing, but to find the root of the problem. Too often doctors and therapists rush to treat the symptom rather than find the actual cause--not Dr. Rick! Because he spends the entire session with you, he is able to track down the root causes and works through both manual therapy and rehab exercises with you. (Ex: I had an issue overhead pressing, but the problem was actually an issue with my triceps.) In addition to his attentive nature, Dr. Rick is very knowledgeable and has an impressive stable of technology that he utilizes to help him solve the problem. The first time in the office you'll notice that there are gadgets and machines all over the place for testing everything from your 3D body image to running analysis. So, whether you're looking for someone to help you recover from an injury or help you check in on your current fitness levels Dr. Rick at The Body Lab is the person to see.
