Note, the placards for much of the museum's collection are not also in English. The summaries of the history of each group of peoples was also in English. The Roman collection was displayed in a very dated manner, many of the objects did not have labels. The Islamic collection was outstanding as was the ancient Middle East, in fact the Middle East collection could very well stand on its own. The Mexico, Central America and South America sections were quite varied. So much really to see, I had to run through the Egyptian section just to get a glimpse. If you're as lucky I myself and have visited many of the countries where these pieces are from, then this museum is for you. From what I noted of the other visitors, they really did not have an interest in the collection. Too bad on them.

They have some great stuff here and I really liked the space in between each piece of art, as odd as that sounds, it let you spread out a bit when looking at a painting. There are many, huge rooms on two floors and there was something around every corner. This place was really cool and I would definitely visit here again.

Since my brother loves trains I actually have developed a bit of a thing for them as well, and…read morediscovering that you can pretty much get anywhere by train in Europe (and the fact that they are electrified to boot) really adds a much greater dimension to them. Anyway, I discovered that this place existed, so I decided to cancel my plans for one morning, jumped on one of the trams, and headed to the end of the line to where the train museum, which is actually in a former railway station, is located. Getting in can be a little tricky because the entrance isn't actually all that obvious, however after discovering that the railway station isn't actually a railway station but the musuem, it started making sense. Anyway, the museum chronicles the history of rail in Belgium from its inception to the present day, though most of the exhibits deal with the early days of rail. That means that there are a number of steam trains here, though they do have some of the more modern trains as well. One odd thing I discovered was that the cafe was at the entrance to the museum as opposed to the end, and unlike most of them museums I have visited, where you tend to go in a circle and land up back at the cafe and gift shop, this one dumps you out elsewhere. Oh, the museum also backs onto a major railway line, so you also get to see a heap of modern trains roaring by.

Admission was €12, and I spent about 45 minutes in the museum. I took my time and tried my best to drag it out, but I was bored; there really wasn't anything noteworthy to see. The layout of the museum was odd, and in the second building, there was a textile exhibit that was alright. The museum was nearly empty the entire time I was there, and I was the only visitor in the building with the textile exhibit. However, there was some sort of filming going on in the stairwell in the building with the textile exhibit, and I had to wait five minutes for them to finish before I could pass through, which was annoying. I guess with the museum being so dead, they didn't expect any visitors. Speaking about stairs, the museum did have an elevator, but it was not in service, and even if it were, not all exhibits were accessible -- some of the rooms and exhibits were only accessible by stairs. The security was also weird and included having to buzz in to speak to security over an intercom before being allowed in. As of September 2024, the museum is closed for renovations for three years. The museum is quite old and outdated, so renovations are much needed. [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; Brussels, Belgium; Museums and Art Galleries; Beware of stairs!]
