Unfortunately, communication and appropriate billing are not a strong suit. I would guarantee you review multiple times with him what work you want done and do not enter contract for per hour worked.

(Originally written for the BBB) Searching for people to work on one's home is a dicey business…read more When it was clear we needed a roof replacement for our Waterloo, Iowa house, like most people, I went to the Internet and did a (Google) search. My goal was to get at least three estimates for our house and optionally the non-attached garage. Several of the companies I contacted, using their "contact us" link, never responded. One company has an entirely different business name than the one listed in the search. Eventually, I got three estimates. Some people get all excited about the shingle brand and the length of the warranty and, realistically, many will never be living in the house by the time to so-called warranty expires. I was more concerned with price and reliability. Of my three estimates, Robert came in considerable lower--house and garage lower than just house alone in the other estimates. We asked him to do our roof, and since we were to be gone back East for several months, he worked us in when another customer asked for a delay. In the midst of our work, an unexpected thing happened. The found the the main/older part of the house has cedar shakes under asphalt shingle--something which should not have been done. Robert generously did not charge us for the additional labor for removal of the shake and the installation of the required sheeting (which we paid for naturally). His crew was meticulous in trying to minimize the mess and routinely cleaning the falling debris. They were quick, dedicated, and exhibited a high level of workmanship. It was a pleasure to have them do our roof and we would highly recommend them.

Main problem: they became busier than they could handle. Everything started to go wrong at the beginning of last spring. We had them come out to start up our irrigation system. They were hard to book. Didn't end up coming until June. Then parts on the irrigation valves had to be replaced even though they replaced them the previous spring. I'll explain more about the irrigation in a little bit. We booked them for all our lawn fertilization and weed control needs. There were supposed to be at least five applications. We only received three. They just couldn't get to us. My dad experienced the same problem at his house. At the beginning of the season they sent us a flier for care for ash trees. Saying they would come and put a protectant on the tree to protect it from ash bores. My husband called them on it twice. We never heard back from them. My husband called for a load of river rock to be brought to the house last summer. The receptionist told him she would not be able to schedule it. They were just too busy. Not let me give you a call later... Just no. So back to the irrigation. This spring we contacted a new company to start up our irrigation. Turns out the valves they replaced TWICE were installed upside down. So again they were busted and would need to be replaced. Nightmare. We literally spent thousands with wapsie pines in the two years we worked with them. But their I experienced workers and inability to take care of existing customers sours me. We're done with them.

The length of delay (good summer months mean lots of people vying for their time) in installation was explained. Installation went smoothly and without a hitch - installer letting me know each day what was happening that day and the next until project completion. Fair pricing, good communication, helpful staff, and quality installation and product. I'd not go anywhere else for my fence and deck needs in the Cedar Valley.

About a week later, he gave me an estimate and agreed to contact my claims representative and collect a shingle to begin the ITEL process. After multiple unanswered calls, texts, and voicemails, I finally reached him through the office. He acknowledged seeing my messages and promised to come by on July 24 or 25, but again failed to follow through or respond. No work was performed and I did not lose money, but I lost valuable time while my roof may be sustaining additional rain damage. I would have preferred a direct answer if he could not or did not want the job rather than repeated promises with no follow-through. I will not be working with City Builders.
