Mills Observatory was gifted to the people of Dundee in 1935 through a bequest from John Mills, who was a linen and twine manufacturer and a keen amateur scientist. The Observatory was purposely built to encourage the public to have a greater understanding of science. Mills Observatory is the UK's only full-time public Observatory, and houses an impressive Victorian refracting telescope, a small planetarium and displays on the solar system, providing visitors with the chance to learn about constellations, planets and other jewels of the night sky. Admission is FREE to the Observatory and displays. A small charge applies to group visits and for public Planetarium Shows. read more

History

Established in 1935.

Gifted to the people of Dundee in 1935, with a bequest from John Mills, a linen and twine manufacturer and a keen amateur scientist, Mills Observatory was designed by the City Architect Mr McLellan Brown in collaboration with Professor Ralph Sampson the Astronomer Royal for Scotland. Built of sandstone, it has a distinctive 7-metre dome. It is the only British observatory to have been built with the sole aim of encouraging public understanding of science.
