The focal point is a castle on a hill, the first Kompan castle in the United States. This destination playground also features Indiana native vegetation, parkour course, sand and water sensory integration, expression swing, and a seasonal splash pad, the first of it's kind in not only the City of Covington, but in Fountain County, Indiana. The playground meets ADA compliance standards. Newly constructed restrooms and drinking fountain are situated on the property. This playground has been featured on RTV6 News Indianapolis and WCIA News Channel 3 Champaign and was part of a documentary produced by KOMPAN, filmed by a production crew from Denmark. Various newspaper and magazines have covered stories related to the project, as well as Parks and Recreation Business Magazine. The Covington City Park is 34-acres and includes trailhead for the Covington Circle Trail, a 5.2 mile paved trail encircling this community. The south leg of the trail was a former railway. The iron bridge crossing Mallory Branch in two sections was repurposed in the county and serves historic purposes. Other park amenities: public pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, disc golf course, pavilions/shelters, batting cages, softball/baseball fields, small commercial-grade playground, historic cabin. Numerous league sports are played seasonally and the park is open 365 days a year. The Covington City Park has plenty of open green space and has dog waste units in numerous locations throughout the park. City of Covington Leash Law pertains to this space. The Big 4 Trail runs across Boone county from Zionsville to Thorntown with almost 10 miles of…read moretrails. The trail continue to be upgraded each season. The trail meanders through small towns, pass farmland, streams and occasional parks and playgrounds. The trail is historical because Abraham Lincoln traveled the railway (now trail) for his inauguration and was brought through during his funeral procession. The trail junction in Whitestown has a small parking lot, picnic tables, a bike pump and lock station. This stop is ideal for stopping for a beverage at a local eatery or the small convenience store. The trail is lined with art and flowers. The six foot wide paved trail is ideal for walking, running and horseback riding. In the winter, the trail can be used for cross country skiing. What a treasure for Boone County!

The Big 4 Trail is a developing Indiana trail that currently extends 15.4 miles with a plan for it…read moreto eventually extend right around 50 miles. The current route includes three disconnected segments in Boone and Clinton counties. I was born in Lebanon and still find that I incorporate Boone County into a lot of my wheeling events. As I get older, I'm finding that I use a lot of trails rather than wheeling on streets. This is a rail-trail named after the "Big 4 Railroad" that existed in the area in the mid-19th century. President Lincoln traveled the route on the way to his inauguration. The Lebanon to Colfax section of the trail was previously known as the Farm Heritage Trail before becoming part of Big 4. Similarly, there's a section north of Thorntown that was known as the Keewasakee Trail. The section from Lebanon to Colfax is mostly rural and passes through Indiana hardwoods and over the scenic Sugar Creek on an iron bridge on the north section. There's a mural celebrating the Big 4 Trail and its railroad history can be seen under the I-65 overpass near the Lebanon trailhead. In 2020, the section north of Thorntown was extended to Colfax. There's also a parallel 4-mile equestrian trail that starts at Serum Plant Road. There's plans for more equestrian trails to be developed. This section is paved. The trail segment heading south towards Lebanon from Sarum Plant Road is currently not paved, with the City of Lebanon planning to begin renovation of the trail in 2023. There are also short sections in Whitestown and Zionsville. The Big 4 is a combo of urban and rural, though I always laugh a bit when I hear the "urban" part since we're talking Boone County urban as opposed to, say, Indy. So, it's more smaller city urban. I like this trail, though there are spots it's definitely more difficult for wheelchair users. Doing the entire trail is difficult since it's disconnected - I can do it, but I'm a pretty experienced trail user. I think most would find it difficult. Trail condition also varies from paved to crush stone to sections that aren't particularly well kept and can get debris. Thorntown to Colfax is really the best section and also has some great sights to see including a Carnegie library and the historic Rosenberger building. As I live on Indy's east side, this isn't my preferred trail. However, when I'm heading toward Boone County or when I need to train on a more difficult path I'll head to Big 4. In terms of hills, it's actually a fairly smooth trail. It's the terrain that can be difficult here. Overall, this is a solid 4-star trail and will likely only get better as development grows over the next few years.

Over…read moreMemorial Day weekend, we had camped at Patoka Lake SRA and the staff were incessant about keeping things very clean in the bathrooms and the rules of no playing on the playgrounds, along with social distancing, seemed to be enforced overall. Sadly, this wasn't the case at Raccoon Lake SRA. I had never been before, and it was one of the only state areas in IN left so we went with it (that should've been a sign). For campers: this seems to be a perfect place for people that are bringing large groups of people together to share a universal campsite and have others surround them. The campsites are way too incredibly close to each other. We couldn't even tell which site was ours upon arrival cause it was basically running into ours with another site. Luckily, that family was concerned about social distancing like we were. The hiking trails are 2/5. They aren't really worth making a trek to this SRA for hiking alone. The focus of this is the lake, obviously. We checked into renting a boat, but it was a hefty $90+ per hour to rent, so find yourself a friend that has a boat and save yourself some money. The hiking trails are just relatively short and run near roads and campsites so it's hard to feel like you're distanced from anyone at any point. They do have an ADA "hike" though, which ventures through some nature. It's also great for strollers and bikers. The camp store is a bit out of the way for campers as they're trying to also get business from boaters as well. We purchased a small bag of ice and two bundles of wood for $15. The lake here is huge and the sunsets are gorgeous. Luckily, we never ran into any raccoons during our time, but our neighbors did briefly. The main issue with this place is the campsites. Ours was incredibly uneven, basically on top of our neighbor's spot. I'll admit it had a great view of the lake and sunset and stars, which is what camping is all about. Would I recommend this place? Yeah, but for boaters and people that are wanting to go camping in large groups of people/family.

Raccoon State Park in Parke County is a beautiful park with a nice campgound, but we will not be…read morereturning. All I can suggest is that if you go there and have a problem with a dog attack, that you 1. make sure you make a report with DNR when it happens, 2. you get the names of the OWNER(s) of the dog(s) and not just the name(s) of the person(s) who has control of the dog(s) at the time of the attack. I also suggest if you, a family member or your pet(s) are hurt, do go to the doctor or vet asap and retain a full report of the visit. The rules of keeping pets on a leach no longer than 6 foot long and/or keeping them securely tied up appeared not to be enforced and may not be a violation that would be deemed liable for the dog(s) owner if you are injured. This is not legal advise as I am not an attorney, just a word of advise. I am sure this can happen anywhere, but this is what we came across at Raccoon in Parke County, so this is our own story. Otherwise, this is a great state park and the staff has always been wonderful.

I don't get to this part of Central Indiana often, however, I had the chance to accompany a friend…read moreand we decided to do a bit of a detour and visit McCloud Nature Park in North Salem (Hendricks County). McCloud Nature Park is a 232-acre nature park established in 2003. It has over six miles of hiking trails, easy access to Big Walnut Creek, a nature center with year-round programs, and a pretty good chance you're going to see wildlife while here. The nature center has live reptiles, amphibians, insects, a bird-viewing room, a resource library, and interactive exhibits. In the late spring, summer, and early fall, you can observe live honeybee hives. There's a park pavilion available for rent (I believe it's only $50 a day). For a nature park, it's obvious much effort has been made to offer some contemporary amenities (modern restrooms/picnic facilities) and a surprising degree of accessibility including the availability of a GRIT Freedom Chair to borrow for two-hour increments (no charge). You can also rent a picnic pavilion with tables/grills. For those who don't know, GRIT chairs are capable of handling basic off-roading quite easily. They are manual chairs, but they have levers instead of the traditional wheel-push function. They're quite cool and ideal for hiking trails. While I was able to handle most of the ground here in my chair, a GRIT chair makes it MUCH easier. The trails are both gravel and natural surfaced trails - they are well marked. You can fish, wade, canoe, and kayak in Big Walnut Creek. The creek is known to have smallmouth bass, panfish, catfish, suckers, and carp (you do have to follow Indiana fishing laws and have an Indiana fishing license). As someone who loves bridges, I was in love with a restored iron truss bridge that is over 100 years old. There's also a swing set with belt, tire, infant, and ADA swings. The wetland habitat has a boardwalk and observation decks. While I'm impressed with how accessible Hendricks County has made this nature park, I'm also impressed with how much accessibility was actually just built into it. There was some clear thought. I sure wouldn't call all the trails accessible, though more advanced wheelchair users like myself can definitely have some fun here (and I did). The nature center admission is free. Hours for the nature center: November through March: Friday & Saturday only, 10am-4pm (closed noon to 1pm). April through October: Wednesday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm (closed noon to 1pm); Sundays, 1-5pm. This is definitely worth a visit to the westside to check out. I'd actually call it a destination nature park with enough features to keep folks happy. There's enough accessibility offerings to allow for all members of the family to enjoy the park. This is an absolute gem and I definitely recommend a visit.

This was my first Warrior Dash, let alone my first organized race ever. It was an absolute blast…read moreall the way around. It seemed like a pretty well organized event, packet pickup and gear check only took a minute and the lines for the drinks and food were not long at all considering there were 8,000 runners on Saturday. All of the volunteers were very helpful and friendly. I did have a couple gripes though. First, I was hoping for a hose off after the race like I had seen at other locations. Unfortunately, this one had a pond to clean off in, and it obviously wasn't very clean. Also, it would have been better if the course were a bit wider so that those who wanted to walk (which was a lot of people, unfortunately) could have a place to do so. The line of cars to get into the course moved extraordinarily slowly. Outside of those minor things, it was a lot of fun and a well organized course. I'll definitely be signing up for more events in the future.

This is our first year doing Warrior Dash at this location. Second year overall. I'm not sure if…read moreit's due to the many days of rainfall before the event, but this was the muddiest I've ever been. There was no running possible due to how bad the mud was on the trails and how slippery everything was. The mud was THE obstacles as it mad it horribly slippery to climb the vertical walls and ropes. Though we struggled and I was the only one in my group to actually finish every obstacles, we had fun. I'm not sure if I want to do it again at this location. I think I may try another state or just stick to our first location in MI.

It is such a lovely facility…read more With my husband's job we spend many weekends each fall at different camp facilities and this has been one of my favorites. I was really impressed by have nice the cabins were. They were modern and clean, and even had fun decorations to make it feel less like a camp and more like a home. The staff were kind and helpful. They offered a great salad bar at lunch and dinner and a yogurt bar at breakfast. Their homemade cinnamon rolls were so good! As I didn't request the services, I cannot speak to that aspect, nor can I speak to the value, but my family loved the available activities (especially the zip line). We can't wait to come back!

It was an awesome opportunity for us to come as a group that normally wouldn't be able to come for a camp experience all together. We got to do knife throwing, zip line (all pictured), paddle boating, swimming, challenge mountain, and chapel in the evening. Activities that were available but we didn't make it to include rock climbing, cliff zip, archery, sand volleyball, canoeing, fishing (bring your own fishing pole), creek walk, prayer walk, paintball, and skeet shooting (was too windy). Meals were great and they were able to accommodate our gluten free needs, even for dessert! Can't wait to come back! The cabin rentals were a great deal for an overnight stay if I had more time.
