Took a ride on the brand new North Shore Rail Trail. I parked on the Mt. Sinai end of the trail in…read morea shopping center. There were a few spots that were reserved for the auto body shop, but there did not seem to be any restrictions on any other spaces. On the Wading River end of the trail there was a barren dirt area adjacent to the trail where 4-5 cars can park. The whole trail was flat with the exception of one incline that was significant enough to earn itself a warning sign. Pavement was brand new and super smooth so the ride was pleasant in that respect. There were many street crossings, especially on the west end of the trail. There seemed to be one every 1/4 mile. No records will be broken on this trail since you have to constantly stop to look for cars at each crossing. Some of the busier roads were equipped with a button to activate lights to alert motorists of crossing pedestrians/bikers. The majority of the scenery was the same throughout: low trees, bushes and large power lines on either side of the trail. There were a few things that stood out including an old LIRR station building at Rocky Point that was recently renovated, the bridge passing over Woodville Rd, and some gardens from houses along the trail that extend beyond their fences. It was surprisingly a good path to spot wildlife. Groundhogs, deer, cats, wild turkeys and bunnies were seen. The trail is a great addition to the network on LI. It's not my favorite trail in the area, but I'm glad I got to see it.

Sinai to Wading River. It is fully asphalted, level with a few long but slight inclines, well maintained (we saw maybe 3 empty bottles alongside it), and is nearly 10 miles each way with a good number of well-marked perpendicular street crossing. The only confusing part (and now, it should not be confusing, with this caveat) is that in the town of Rocky Point, the trail stops, YOU CONTINUE FOR 1.5 BLCOKS ON PRINCE STREET, and then you will again see the signs for the Rail Trail to continue on. We saw deer dining alongside the trail, which was quite nice. At the western end, you are welcome to park in the parking lot of the Rose Caracoppa Senior Center, although the trail actually starts about 2/3 of a mile west of this. Enjoy this gift of a nice run/walk/ride.

Nearly all of the park is dirty and rock road, not very smooth. Signs are posted that a park decal is required but I decided that was a rule I could bend since I wasn't sticking around. Down the road and out to the end, I found a nice parking area (not smooth and ouchies on my car). Despite the chill and the howling wind, I was able to get quite close to the lighthouse and enjoy the view of Plum Gut. This is the very tip of the northern fork at the very end of Long Island. There are no amenities here. It's a beach park without toilets or shelters. Probably great for fishing. On a warmer and sunnier and less rainy day, this would be a fabulous park. The trails are well marked and it's a nice, scenic hike through the woods. Even better, on a hot day, the trails are under a canopy providing ample shade. Just note that the trails are narrow and there's quite a bit of poison oak along them so use caution. Also note, the entrance on 25A is hidden but noticeable by the red Audubon Society House. A nice park for a nature walk and recommended.

Not much elevation or tricky hills making it perfect for young riders. People usually will bike/ hike both ways so watch for oncoming people traffic. There are restroom facilities at the start and plenty of parking. Also around the trail, particularly around the corners are benches to rest at if you need a break. Of course watch out for kiddos on E-scooters and bikes, they don't always signal coming from behind you but then again neither do adults, so just be aware. There is also access on River Rd. which is located south of Rte 25 if you find the parking lot is not your thing. There are also pickleball courts, small playground and ball fields as of 2024 Also an ice rink. It's actually quite set up nice and no fee for parking. A great way to spend an afternoon.

I completed 4 miles on the blue trail which is much easier than the black diamond trail. But it was a challenge and I had to take some breaks. Still working on that cardio! Lots of vines, roots, and rocks here. On my GPS trail maps, it says this trail has an elevation of 1000ft. Probably true because going downhill was speedy, loopy, and fun. Make sure you have your helmet, safety first! Overton is quite popular and it's also close to the Glacier trail, so do both if you can. Go and enjoy!!

It's a lovely place to ride with varied terain. One could ride all day if so desired. There are some steep up and down trails and some with rocks so be sure your horse is in condition and has shoes or hoof boots. There are easier rides there too if you know where to go. They have installed a mounting ramp for riders, and there is plenty of room for parking with horse trailers. Careful on the drive in as there are deep potholes.
