Fast forward to October 2024: fed up with my heavy, itchy, discolored, and achy legs, I finally decided to seek treatment for my diseased veins. Late one night, I began meticulously searching my health insurance provider directory for in-network vascular specialists, cross-referencing reviews to find a doctor who truly stood out. After reading a slew of poor reviews for the first ten specialists, I widened my search radius to 20 miles--and that's when I found Dr. Altuwaijri. The intake paperwork ran four to five pages and was heavily focused on payment enforcement, legal disclaimers, and collection warnings. For patients navigating a medical concern, that tone is not a great foundation. The physician was dismissive and lacked basic bedside manner. Whether intentional or not, the interaction gave the impression that cash-pay patients were not the preferred clientele, despite the fact that we came fully prepared to pay out of pocket. The total treatment cost came to approximately $20,000 across eight to ten sessions. We understood and accepted that. What we did not expect was a requirement to pay the entire amount upfront at the very first visit, before a single procedure had taken place. We also scheduled all appointments well in advance, confirmed twice, and shared the full schedule with my mother's care team. A week before the first visit, we received notice that the location had changed between their two sites, and only learned this after my sister called and waited on the phone. Shortly after, another message arrived announcing additional schedule changes due to "provider changes." In plain terms, the doctor rescheduled at their own convenience with little consideration for patients who had already coordinated transportation, caregivers, and time off. We canceled all appointments and requested the medical records. The staff response was dismissive throughout. After the fact, I reviewed Yelp and Google and found our experience is not unique. Scheduling issues, payment concerns, and poor communication show up repeatedly in other reviews. Their branding positions them as the leading specialist in Orange County. That is a marketing claim they place themselves. It may carry some weight, but it should not be taken at face value without doing your own research. I arrived for my scheduled appointment at their long-standing office at 24411 Health Center Drive (Suite 550 at Saddleback), which is the exact address listed on my appointment confirmations. When I got to the 5th floor, the office was vacated and locked, with a paper sign referencing the "Taj Mahal" building. When I called their office for guidance, staff told me to look for the Taj Mahal building as the reference point. They are not in the Taj Mahal. They are across the street and down the block at 24012 Calle de la Plata (Suite 450). I have serious knee mobility issues and get winded quickly with minimal physical exertion, which is the exact reason I need to see a cardiologist in the first place. Instead of receiving care, I was left walking around looking for an office based on vague, inaccurate reference points. After being misdirected to two separate locations, the physical toll was too great, and I had to turn around and go home without seeing a doctor. Checking their communication afterward confirmed the incompetence: Not a single confirmation or portal message informed me that the practice had moved. Their incoming automated phone greeting has zero recording or announcement stating they moved or providing the new address. My primary care physician moved three years ago, and their phone recording still clearly directs patients to their new location. This cardiology group did not even bother. When I tried to email a formal complaint directly to management, their listed public email address failed to accept incoming messages, leaving patients with no functional written channel to reach them. A cardiology practice that demonstrates this level of negligence regarding patient mobility, basic communication, accurate directions, and broken contact channels does not belong in healthcare. If you value your time and physical well-being, look elsewhere for cardiovascular care.
