I would not recommend Milan Institute based on my overall experience as a student. Unfortunately, my experience was much more frustrating and disappointing than I expected when I enrolled. There were several situations throughout my time at the school that left me feeling that student concerns were not handled appropriately and that the learning environment could have been much more supportive and professional.
I also want to specifically address my experience with Timeka Barnes, the manicure instructor. To be clear, she was not my regular instructor. My experiences with her occurred when she was serving as a substitute teacher for our class. Therefore, my comments about her teaching style are based on the interactions and situations I personally experienced when she was our substitute.
During those times, I found her teaching style extremely difficult to work with. I felt that students were often treated more like children than adults who are paying for their education and preparing for professional careers. Her approach came across to me as highly controlling and micromanaging, rather than supportive or educational.
I also experienced what felt like a strong "my way or no way" attitude. I felt that students could be singled out, overly scrutinized, or repeatedly corrected in a way that created an uncomfortable classroom environment. Rather than feeling encouraged to learn and improve, I sometimes felt that the focus was more on control and authority.
I want to be clear that I am not saying this was simply my personal opinion about her personality. I personally witnessed and experienced situations involving her that concerned me, and I was also aware of other students expressing concerns about their interactions with her. Those experiences contributed to my overall impression of the classroom environment when she was substituting.
Teachers absolutely have the responsibility to maintain classroom standards and correct students when necessary. However, I believe that can be done while still treating adult students with respect, patience, and professionalism. Unfortunately, that was not how I experienced those interactions.
I enrolled at Milan Institute because I genuinely wanted to learn, improve my skills, and build a career in the beauty industry. I expected to receive quality instruction in a professional and supportive environment. Instead, my overall experience left me frustrated and disappointed.
I am sharing this review so prospective students can make an informed decision before enrolling. I encourage anyone considering Milan Institute to speak with current and former students, ask questions about the instructors and classroom environment, and carefully research the school before making a financial and educational commitment.
