Sadly the service was so bad we weren't given the opportunity to try the food to taste it. This is a review based off of service on June 5th and 7th. We were so looking forward to trying the new hidden gem down the street from our place that we called during our drive up to confirm they were open. The woman who answered the phone was friendly and informative letting me know she would be open until 7pm. We arrived at 6pm, hungry and excited. We left at 6pm, hungry and disappointed. Door was locked, truck parked out back. I can only assume there weren't any signs of life because the customer service was so great it killed them. Next day. We began watching the Belmont coverage and decided to give BBQ in Traunik another chance. Learning a lesson from last time we called ahead. No one answered. It was 6:00 pm and they allegedly close at 8pm on weekends. Good thing we put our money on Tonalist and not Michlache's. Tonalist wins. Michlache's loses. This is our review based off of service on July 2. One more chance. One more time. One more epic fail. Wanting to give them another chance we took a party of 8 out of towers for dinner. We were excited when the open sign was on, door was open, grill smoking ,welcoming us to Texas in the UP, and patrons were aplenty dining inside. The woman behind the counter quickly dismissed us saying they closed 10 minutes prior. Okay, fine, we love a good beer special at Trenary Tavern so no love lost. I stopped to clarify the hours, hopeful we could come back this holiday weekend and the conversation went: Me: What exactly are your hours of operation? Owner: Open until 7 today. 8pm Friday. Me: I called you last month, you told me 7 on a Thursday, we were here well before then, and you were closed, do you close early some times? Owner: No ma'am Me: Okay, well the next day, a Saturday, I called and no one answered. Owner: No ma'am. I never close early. Me: Oh, well maybe you had somewhere to be those evenings because no one was here. Owner: No ma'am. You are mistaken. You don't know what you are talking about. Me: Actually I drove all the way here from Chicago so I know for a fact I tried to come on a Thursday and Saturday last month. Owner: NO MA'AM. YOU ARE NOT TELLING THE TRUTH. That's right. I'm a paying customer who enjoys wasting her time lying about things as simple and petty as what time a BBQ joint is open, In fact, I drove the whole way here from Chicago and bothered to try to eat at your restaurant (which by the way is in a very small and quaint location with a limited population so wow, you're going places) three times and decided to lie about your hours. I ordered the chicken and pulled pork., with a side of corn off the cob and cold macaroni salad (also served with Texas toast). The corn was amazing, and had sweet pepper and onion mixed in. I don't normally like cold macaroni salad because most places put way too much mayo in it, but the ratio of ingredients in this one was perfect and just enough sauce to cover the noodles. I need to make a point to mention, that if you do not like smoked meats, or that smokey flavor, order something else on the menu. The chicken was slightly on the dry side, the pork was cooked perfectly and you could see pieces of what once was a smoke line, and after covering the meat with their homemade BBQ sauce, it was all amazing. read more

It's the middle of nowhere, but if you're traveling through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Mikulich General Store, at the corner of H44 and the Eben-Trenary Road in the heart of beautiful downtown Traunik has food that will knock your socks off. And it's all fresh, fresh, FRESH! Authentic hickory-smoked Texas-style barbecue meats -- chicken, brisket, and pulled pork -- are combined with sides of your choice, including cowboy-style beans and fabulous macaroni and cheese, plus deli sandwiches, homemade pizza and the freshest, crunchiest chef's salad I've ever had in the entire U.P. Middle of Nowhere gem. Absolutely going on my list of places to stop again. Best best best beef brisket ever. Sides were exceptional as well. Fully remodeled, quaint, and friendly. I will be back. This town is a postage stamp, and its just uncommon to see a place of this quality. read more

Stopped in at Mikulich general store on friday (November 13,2015). It was around 1300 hours and the place was open (as the sign read) and a very clean, we'll maintained place of business. Certainly what anyone would want to see in an eatery. Not truly a general store as the label would indicate but a real diners, drive ins and dives kind of establishment. Off the beaten path and certainly not getting all the recognition it should be getting based on the quality of its servings and patronage. I ordered a 1 meat order of smoked brisket with 2 sides. Used the restroom while waiting on my order only to find it as clean as my own bathroom in my home. Very impressive. The owner was very hospitable and informative about his ownership of the business as well as courteous to us as customers. Well, down to the food. The food was outstanding. I'm originally from the detroit area where smoke house cooking is very abundant. Particularly one place in Roseville that is the best truly smoked bbq I've ever had and still go down to eat there occasionally . Mikulich general store is UP's answer to Roseville ' s smokehouse in the Detroit area. Real deep smoked, tender, juicy and very generous servings of food. You will not leave hungry. You may not even try what looked like tasty eggnog struessel cake after indulging in a full plate of bbq. The cowboy smoked pinto beans were incredible and the corn off the cob mixed with peppers and onions and seasoning was delicious. All in all, I'd say this place is a hit and should be a stop everyone should make if within a couple counties of its location.
