Ask the Community - Mike's Camera- Menlo Park

I have a Canon G9 (2007) that got "lens error." last week. I saw there is a question from two years ago there is a chance. Do you still do that today (take a look a possibly help fix or find a fix) ? thanks in advance.

We would likely have to send it to Canon to get an estimate for you on a full repair but if you want ot bring by the store we can take a look before deciding the best way to proceed for you

Do you sell slide scanners? I have a lot of slides to digitize?

I do not currently have a scanner for slides but I do have this solution that attaches to a digital camera for easy capture:…

I have old 8mm videos. I am digitizing them but get no sound. Would love to rent a camcorder to determine if mine is defective?

Drop my rental team a message at rentca@Mikescamera.com and they can let you know what we have available

Do you develop the film? Just to clarify, how much does it cost to develop one roll?

Yes we do process film - you can find our services and pricing here: https://mikescamera.com/film-developing

I have an old Nikon F. Can you clean and check it out to see if it works? I haven't used it for more than 40 years, but iIt appears to be in good condition. And, can you also clean the lenses I have for it?

Bring it by and we can take a look for you and check it over!

Do you rent a Canon SLR body?

We do have a couple of those in our rental pool. check out our rental process here: https://mikescamera.com/repairs-rentals

    Do you clean dslr sensors?

Yes we do, bring it in and we can usually do it by the next day for you

I have a Nikon Coolpix S8100 that is stopped working. THe flash doesn't turn on and the when I turn the camera on I get a message that says "Mode dial is not in the proper position". Is this something you can repair? Thank you

If you can bring it by the store we can take a look for you to see if it is an easy fix. If not we can send it to get repaired. Often the repairs on this type of camera out-weigh the option of looking at a replacement but lets take a look and give…

I have a Canon S95 with a lens error. Is this something you can repair? If so, what is the approximate cost of repair? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to repair or just buy a similar older camera.

Thank you for reaching out - that is a Great camera. Sadly the challenge is parts for that model. it is likely they would not be available. A repair would be close to $180 is it can be done. If you want to bring it in we can take a look for you…

Do you fix lcd camera? I have Fujifilm XT20 that need lcd screen fix after water spilled on it.

Ronnie Sorry to hear of your camera issue. If you can come by the store so we can look that would be great. We would likely have to send it in for repair for you.

Do they do digital passport photos?

Thank you for your message, Yes we do provide this service. No appointment needed.

Do you do Nikon camera calibration?

Thank you for your message. We would have to send it to Nikon for accurate calibration for you.

How much does it cost to get a roll of film developed? And what is the turnaround time?

Thank you for your message. You can find all of our film services here. our turn times vary a little based on volume, best to call the store prior to heading in to see what they are running that day.…

If I take my film to get developed do I get my negative roll back?

    Yes!

I bought a Nikon D7100 from Mike's Camera in Mill Valley and used it only very occasionally. Can I make an appointment to have someone go over the functions of the camera?

Thank you for reaching out. Yes we would be happy to assist. Call the store directly to set something up. The number for our Mill Valley location is 415-383-6477 Mike

Can I sell used camera gear here?

Yes they buy and sell used camera gear

Hi! Do you sell any point and shoot film cameras?

Thank you for your message - we do a couple of options of point and shoot film cameras including the disposable ones. We also get some used in occasionally. You can check…

I have the kodak disposable camera, can i get it developed in here? And how long does it take

Thank you for your question. Yes we can develop this film for you and can often have it done the same day Mike

    Do they sell 35mm film?

Yes! 35mm film from Ilford, Kodak, Fuji, Revlog, and Lomography. They have C-41, E-6, and B&W. They also have 120 and several Polaroid formats.

Do they develop super 8/8mm film here?

Thank you for reaching out We cannot actually develop the film, you have to send it directly to Kodak for that. We do offer a transfer service to have those films converted…

PhotoTrainer - Tom took my game to the next level

I took Tom's "DSLR/M Jumpstart" class this June. Glowing review follows…read more.. But first, a bit about me: I've been a latent photography maven since my early teens, starting with a Polaroid and quickly graduating to my dad's old Bell & Howell 35mm. As things often do, it found itself on a shelf until the advent of the iPhone and ever-present cameras. Discovering that I enjoy taking nice shots, but always knowing I could do better, I finally splurged on a "prosumer" Canon mirrorless. Not wanting to let it be relegated to the same fate as the B&H, I immediately went looking for some classes, and found Tom literally one neighborhood away. I immediately liked his no-nonsense commentary about how good photography connects us to our memories and what we experienced at the time, but also his keen level of humility; I think that's essential to being a good teacher, as hubris stands in the way of connection with students. When I arrived, Tom had a cozy kitchen table set up for three students, with brief handouts at the ready, and a table full of curios just begging for practice. Alas, one student was a no-show, but we had lively chat until Tom decided to get underway. There wasn't a single boring moment in the day; Tom immediately got both of us familiar with the controls on our fancy cameras, then started reviewing the basics of photography. It wasn't a theory class, per se, but he spent as much time as it took going over both how our cameras take photos, and how we perceive them. The room was set up for a simple PowerPoint-style presentation, but it was always in the background as we moved back and forth between our devices and discussion. Just setting expectations: about 75-80% of the class is "ground school" -- we worked with our cameras and settings indoors, practicing a bit on nearby objects, and then venturing outside for some practice. Tom made it fun, setting us up for a bit of a scavenger hunt in his back patio that's clearly designed to get us looking at the objects a little more deeply, and playing with focus and depth of field to achieve artistic effect. By the end of the day, I didn't feel like a "pro," by any stretch of imagination. But I did feel like I had the potential to get there. I haven't switched my camera back to "Auto" mode since the class. I've taken some lousy photos, and then realized what I'd done wrong. And I've taken some amazing shots. My only gripe about the class? It's too short. I left wondering, "ok, what next?" Tom offers a number of other opportunities like photo walks, and I'll be taking him up on them in the near future, but I definitely felt like there could have been a second day. That said, I think that's a good thing: the class achieves a "jump start" for new photographers, and leaves you wanting more.

Initially we talked on the phone and I explained what I needed and he told me about his business and they way he operates. I knew then he was right for me to take a lesson on getting my LR up and running. Then, when I met him he was just as nice as he was on the phone. Dan explained things in a logical way and went at my pace. He let me decide how I wanted Lightroom set up on my Mac and wasn't insistent to do things his way. He listened to hear exactly what I wanted to achieve and the end result I wanted. He explained things very well and provided appropriate rationale behind his suggestions. It became clear to me that he is very experienced and knows what he is talking about. Dan's recommendations were awesome and worked out much better than I would've ever done on my own. Dan is very patient, easy to talk to and ask questions to. He doesn't intimidate or make you feel inferior if you are a novice and makes you feel right at ease in his lesson. The environment he teaches in is clean, quiet and he gives you his full attention. Dan was able to get my computer set up to function with LR so I can begin editing the pictures I have taken over the years. I had only planned to go for the one lesson, but it was so helpful I have gone back several more times to get additional instruction to learn LR editing tips as I wanted to take advantage of all I could learn from him. Dan is well worth the time and the cost. If you want to learn or improve in your photography or large computer programs like Lightroom or Photoshop, I highly recommend Dan as the instructor.

He's very professional, friendly, quick to respond, and just amazing to work with overall. I had just started wedding planning when I ran into a friend who told me Augie was their photographer and shared his info. We had looked through a number of photographers, but Augie's work stood out to us through all of it--his photos truly captured the feeling of each moment, and we loved everything in his portfolio. When we reached out, he responded so quickly and answered all our questions right away. For our engagement shoot, it was my husband's first time doing a formal photoshoot. Augie came very prepared, offered great tips, and made us feel completely at ease. He was so easy to talk to and work with, and we genuinely had such a fun time with him! He was also flexible with timing and weather to make sure we could get the best lighting. We were blown away by his ability to notice something special in just a few seconds and turn it into a beautifully captured moment. For our wedding day, Augie was even more impressive. I had shared our (very full) itinerary with him ahead of time, and I was surprised to notice that he knew it by heart. When we started running behind, he gently but efficiently helped move things along. Even though it was his first time at our venue, he had an incredible eye for finding perfect spots, turning a simple fence into a magical backdrop. He worked seamlessly around the golfers at our venue, guiding us at the right times and capturing the sweetest in-between moments. He also accommodated all our specific requests, including photos with our sports car and dress details. We absolutely love our wedding photos and all the special moments he preserved. We were also so impressed with how fast he sent us our sneak peek photos--it was such a fun surprise to get highlights so quickly. Overall, I can't stress enough how grateful we are for Augie and everything he captured during our engagement shoot and wedding day. We're so happy with all the memories he helped capture that we will cherish forever, and I truly can't recommend him enough.

Echoing my friend Cindy L, yes, this team is FABULOUSSSSSSSS and FASTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…read more I met Michael in 2009, and I knew he and his team would be my wedding photographer and cinematographer one day when I tie the knot. In 2010, I introduced my start-up company in Redwood City to Michael and his team to do an IoT video and they loved his work. The animation was pure genius and story line was so easy to comprehend. In 2014, I introduced my best friend, Cindy L, to Michael and his team, for her wedding, and she and her husband absolutely fell in love with Capture the Love photos and cinematography. Fast forward to 2016. When my NOW husband and I booked Nestldown for our wedding venue in 2016, I knew IMMEDIATELY who I would have as my photographer and cinematographer--the wonderful Capture the Love team!!! I did not even shop around. Right after we signed the contract with Nestldown, I immediately called Michael Soo and made sure we reserve him for Fall 2017 before another couple snatch him from us. Michael and his team come at a price, but you SERIOUSLY pay for what you get. I honestly don't know any team who work as fast as this team. We took our engagement photos and finished around 5pm and within 3 hours, we received sneak previews, and by 9pm, we received all our photos! We had our wedding on Saturday, which ended at 10pm, and by midnight, we received 2 sneak previews!!!! On Tuesday (yes less than 72 hours later), we received another 20 photos!!!! He informed us that all the photos will be ready by Friday afternoon (less than 7 days from our wedding!!) ! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY, no one works this fast, except this fabulous team. I keep looking at the 20+ photos and I am still floating on cloud 9 and reliving every moment of our wedding day. On the day of our wedding, the team showed up early, which was SOOOO MUCH appreciative, so they could ensure they were able to capture every little minute detail. They always had a smile on their faces, even when they have to deal with crazy family members and vendors who get in the way of the shots. I looked in the corner of my eye and I was personally annoyed certain ppl/kids were in the shot, but the team was very professional and never yelled or had a frown on their faces. This definitely helps keep the bride calm. I never doubted this team and trusted them whenever they told us to go here and there, and do this and that pose. I told them, "tell us what to do and we will do it!" I can't wait to see all the photos and the cinematography so I can relive one of the best days of my life! When you ask former brides and grooms for wedding planning tips, they always say, "spend money on your photography and cinematography!!!" Best advice ever since you get to keep these photos and videos forever compared to florals which will last no more than a few days! Thank you so much Capture the Love!! Money well spent!!!
