When I got home from the hospital I immediately hired a Cancer Navigator out of UCLA to find out where to go for oncology care. She did some research and gave me 4 names of oncologists in the USA who specialize in this stupidly rare cancer. I was thrilled to see one doctor- Dr. Mark Agulnik- practices in Chicago!!! At Northwestern. Dr. Agulnik and Northwestern were, at the time, out-of-network for me, but I didn't care. The expertise is completely worth it, and fun news is they are now in-network with my insurance plan. So I'm set! On January 14th, I celebrated a year of being tumor-free, "no evidence of disease", and I am so grateful to Dr. Agulnik, PA Sue, Nurse Elka, Bianca at Registration, and the whole team up on the 21st floor in Heme/Oncology! Well done, everyone!! I am sooooooo lucky to live near Chicago and Northwestern Hospital. And I'm so lucky that Dr. Agulnik and his fantastic team are able to manage my case. I'm immensely grateful. The other day I called several times, listened thru the automated message & then each time sat on hold for quite some time before being disconnected! The following day I tried again at 4:30. And the message said they were not taking calls, that the "on call" team was covering. I thought this weird since their closing time is listed at 5:30, 7:30 & 9:30 pm- depending on the day. Finally, the next day I found a number for one of the nurses there & was able to leave a voicemail. I received a call back today. When I relayed the extreme difficulty I had trying to reschedule an appt to this support staff/scheduler I received a chuckle & was matter of factly told it was normal that no one answers the phones after 4:20 pm since that is when they stop taking calls & refer everything to the "on-call" team. This was news to us! Then why bother listing their "open" hours as being a full hour past that time, 2 hours past that time & 5 hours past that time-- depending on the day? So in summary, the telephone triage system is VERY inconvenient to navigate, and usually results in long wait times and disconnects/hang ups. And patients should know that they stop answering the phones for non-emergencies at 4:30- regardless of their posted hours.

Every visit has been truly lovely. Each staff member welcomes each patient, introduces themselves, explains what will happen at each step in the process, and provides little things for comfort like a warm blanket while napping in preparation for a contrast CT. Always calm, smiling, comforting and attentive. All appointments have started exactly on time which helps relieve anxiety as there is no stressful waiting. The facility is spotless and so beautiful. It does not feel like a hospital at all. Nice cafeteria for a snack afterwards. Free parking, too. Shout out especially to Ms. Lavin for a really extraordinary and helpful educational session today. If you should have a need for a medical genetics consult I highly recommend Christina Lavin! And thank you to medical assistant Janice for the quick and painless blood draw today. Honestly I was, at first, thinking this was a lot. But I quickly changed my mind. I was assured they knew I chose the right hospital! Registration was so easy, the associate was extremely professional but also had such an amazing personality. She could see I was nervous, she took the time to stop for a minute to let me know I was in good hands. She wasn't saying that just to say it, she has experienced all kinds of services and she would never go anywhere else. I feel bad I forgot her name because this was 3 days ago. 8/17/26 6:30 pm is when I met her. Fast forward to today, arrival was 5:45 am I went up to the second floor and check in was smooth - all of my information was accurate so I just waited for my turn, I made sure to get names this time! My journey began with Pre-Op nurse NATALIE, best beginning to my scary day! Her bedside manner should be standard. So kind and patient, explaining everything. She raved about the ELMHUST Team in comparison to other facilities/ experiences. The next step to my journey was surgery, Nick was my OR Nurse, again explained what's happening and the team that would be in there. Margaret, Anesthesiologist Nurse and Dr Bautista, Anesthesiologist . Just as amazing Margaret heard my surprise with the OR table and helped to reassure me. Dr Bautista was fast but clearly explained what his job was and what the procedure would be. Margaret had a CCU nurse but I couldn't remember her name ( I'm sorry) she was so sweet smiling the entire team did Great! Next stop over to Post Op and Wendy! I don't remember much but I do know she stayed close, she was kind. She explained everting went well and the Dr had already notified my family. I think I slept a lot of Post OP because she said after a little while they need me to stay awake, she told me where I was going next and I was rolled away! Off to Observation a new unit in the first floor near the ER. It was really nice- clean and definitely everything new. STAFF! Kudos to all of them for their professionalism, kindness, comforting words and supportive comments. Everyone was GREAT!! I was told by a nurse to park outside the main entrance because my father would be brought down shortly. I waited for about an hour, but he never came out. I called Customer Service for an update, and they told me that he had been released a while ago. However, no one brought him down to me like I was told they would. I then spent about 20 minutes looking for him because he had given me his phone. When I finally found him, I learned that he had been told something completely different--that I was supposed to wait outside of his room for him. They also told my father that I wasn't answering the hospital's calls. However, I answered every single time they called. I would repeatedly say "hello," but there would be no response on the other end. So I was very confused and frustrated to hear that they told him I wasn't answering when I was picking up every call. This resulted in my father and I getting into an argument because we were given two completely different stories. This could have easily been avoided with better communication between staff, patients, and their families. Overall, everyone I interacted with was kind, but the communication definitely needs improvement. Please work on making sure patients and their families are given consistent, accurate, and clear information. Thank you!

My review is mixed feeling, I am grateful for my orthopedic surgeon, while in surgery, I know he…read moreaccidentally cut an artery in my foot while removing hardware from my tibia and fibula that was 25 years old, I do not know if that is normal or it happens I don't know but they repaired it took longer in surgery obviously, but afterwards I'm left with some numbness in tingling and cold and spasms and swelling off and on, they had me go to get a referral for my doctor for an ultrasound on the veins for blood flow, the test itself when okay and they did not find it was a blood flow problem, I believe it has to be with the nerves possibly or a muscle problem from moving the muscles around I don't even know yet but I still suffer with it, but my issue with them is first while I was in the hospital my nursing staff was great they did an awesome job orthopedic nurses in this hospital are really good, they charge for therapy but all they did was have me walk from my bed to the bathroom and back never took me out of the room once but sure did Bill the insurance for a full therapy session, next the food service people are absolutely terrible, I don't know if the woman who normally brought my food was just against white people or something I have no clue but she never would put it where I could reach it, she'd always put the food on the tree but never helped me get it never push it up to the bed or close to me. If the tray just happened to be on the side of the room or in front of the bed she would put it there and leave it, so I would always be hungry because by the time someone came into the room the food was cold didn't taste good anyway but it was cold which is not good unless you're ordering cold food. Biggest problem I have with this hospital though is there billing center, I have been fighting with these people since they sent me my first bill in June of 2026 for the ultrasound that I had in March of 2026, when I questioned why they were sending me that bill, they said my insurance denied payment, but my insurance shows they paid for that date, and they said it was for the doctor's bill that reads the ultrasound but they tried to tell me the doctor performed the ultrasound, they did not! I kept asking them ever since to please resubmit to the insurance make sure all the information they provided them was correct, cuz my insurance would not tell them they need my social security number and they would not tell them that they don't have a patient under them with that information unless it was wrong. Which is strange that they would pay the big part of the bill and deny something else while asking for that information doesn't make sense, finally I had my insurance in on it three way call my agent asked the right questions I didn't think of, and it turns out the claim they put through was not mine it was for someone else a man I am not a man. I am a woman since the day I was born I've been female, so now it's a weight game while we wait to see if they actually resubmit like my insurance asked. Which I asked so many times already and they had the nerve to turn me into collections without checking anything to make sure they were right, put me through all this stress when they entered the wrong information to begin with. From the start he was insistent that while the word "cancer" is alarming, it's an emotional emergency and not a medical one (at least at my stage), and that I had time to do genetic testing, get second opinions, research, etc. It allowed me to take a breath and approach my disease rationally and with acceptance. As mentioned before he is very chill; it shouldn't be taken as dispassionate. I feel he knows how to remain placid in the face of the storm of emotions swirling around this diagnosis. I ended up having a lumpectomy and the scars from it six months on are fading and the job he did was spectacular. If it weren't for the swelling/discoloration from the radiotherapy you'd never know I had a chunk of me removed. I've been seeing an oncological massage therapist who has seen a lot of work done and she has high praise for his scalpel skills. In any case, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him or the staff at Lynn Sage Cancer Center who were all wonderful to deal with. I know another reviewer took umbrage with the presence of interns, but as a person who comes from a family full of doctors and nurses, I fully support the teaching nature of the facility and had no problem sharing my case/body with the next generation of practitioners who sat in on various parts of my treatment. It's one of the reasons why I go to Northwestern in the first place.

At first I was thinking of going to a female surgeon, but my plastic surgeon's office told me he was one of the best breast surgeon's in the country, and they were right. His nurse Ann is a rockstar too. I don't leave reviews usually, but I felt it was important to let women know they can have faith in Dr. Bethke, and will receive excellent care with him and his team. I'm blessed to have been treated with such skill and top level care.

Before moving forward, I specifically asked whether the procedure would leave a scar and was told it would not. At my follow up appointment at the beginning January I was informed by Dr. Regina O'Brien that all stitches had been removed and was advised to start using scar treatment. Later in January , I realized that what I thought was a scab was actually a stitch that had been left in my chest. I had to schedule another visit to have it removed. The area had to be numbed again, which meant going through additional discomfort and inconvenience that could have been avoided. I asked that my insurance not be billed for the corrective visit since the retained stitch was due to their oversight and negligence. I also requested a discount on the bill I received, but that requests was denied by Dr. Regina O'Brien without consideration of the circumstances. Since the removal of the remaining stitch, the scar has developed into a tender keloid. It is very noticeable and cosmetically upsetting. I underwent this procedure expecting improvement, but the result has been disappointing And heartbreakin. I'm sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision
