Downtown has really changed for the better in the last few years, and the addition of Midwest Barber Company is no exception. They really transformed the space from the boring white walls into something truly unique. Matt has been cutting my hair for a few years now and I'm absolutely ecstatic to have him working in his own shop downtown finally. He specializes in classic haircuts, beard trims, and shaves. Another rad thing about this spot is that NewLife Tattoos, the oldest tattoo parlor in Champaign, is sharing the space and utilizing the basement as a second location to their campus shop! I was in the area and needed a haircut. I did not have an appointment or did not know that I needed one. After all there was a sign that said "walk in's welcome." And there were not any customers in the facility at the time. Two guys who work at the facility were just standing around on their mobile. I asked if I can get a haircut and a beard trim. I was asked if I had an appointment I replied no and there is a sign that said walk in welcome. I was told that I had to have an appointment and I needed to do it online. So before I start dealing with these two clowns. I asked when is the earliest appointment available they replied in a week. What a joke! I walked out it's not worth it. This is not NYC or LA people it's just a haircut and a beard trim. But some of these places act like they are so trendy and I need them more than they need me. It's not worth it!!!!!! read more

TLDR: skip this place or don't get Koy. There's a million other places for a cut in the area. Others are cheaper & have a nicer atmosphere. Feel a little guilty, myself, for overlooking the clear one-dimensional styling from online pics. Tried this place and didn't realize issues until I got home. Politely called and requested a fix w/ details of what left me unsatisfied. Went back, restated the issues, and was told it would take another appointment & id be charged for another haircut?! 1) Why not discuss this over the phone & save us both time? 2) How do you justify charging for another haircut when I wasn't satisfied the first time? The attitude was just insane. Free advice, realize you're a small-town barber...appreciated, but also disposable. People will find better & better definitely exist in the area. read more

After having my son's hair cut twice at this shop over the last year, we scheduled an appointment on a Friday for a special event. Walked in the door to an Empty house and were told they "don't cut kids under 10." Super weird cause we had been there twice before. I asked why I got all the appointment reminders and why I bothered to confirm the appt to be told it wouldn't be honored. "The website says no cuts under 10." Umm okay. My bad for missing that. The kicker is I was going to speak to the tattoo artist about my upcoming tattoo and get some artwork started to review. No chance now. Literally the place was empty. We booked there for convenience for meeting some friends after and because we had been before but we definitely won't book again, for anything. Going back to Andys. read more

Just got a great haircut from Franklin. He took his time making all the details look great and still had me out within 30 minutes. One of the best haircuts I've ever had. I've bounced around to many places in Champaign looking for a barbershop that gives me a reliable cut. Matt at Midwest Barber is my dude. He's always welcoming with a smile and a great attitude even after what seems to be busy day. He has great attention to detail and I'm happy with how my cut is every time. This place is great. I've lived in CU for 6 years and had my hair cut at almost every barber shop in town. These guys are a little pricier than some but do the job right. They know their stuff and won't let you walk out with a bad cut. Easy 5 stars from me. read more
