I saw Shrek the Musical here two years ago, and saw Oklahoma today. The food here is pretty good. I've had the pork shank twice, and it does not disappoint! The mashed sweet potatoes are heavenly! The dessert was okay; store-bought raspberry cheesecake. The show was pretty good too. There were some missteps in some of the dance numbers (near drop, near fall into orchestra pit), and a couple of wardrobe malfunctions (ripped pants, ripped hemline), but otherwise the show was very enjoyable. Now the question is: are these servers who act, or actors who serve? Because they do both very well! read more

I'v been to the MAC a few times in the past and have really enjoyed it, but this time it just wasn't good, and I don't think I will be back. My dinner was cold by the time it got to me. There was a skimpy portion of thin and fatty odds and ends of ham, some coagulated super garlicky mashed potatoes with no butter or gravy, and steamed green beans which were flavorless and completely unadorned. The seating was incredibly cramped, and I did not enjoy sharing a table with complete strangers. There was an air conditioning vent blowing directly down onto me, and the wall behind me was filthy with dust bunnies and lint. By the end of the show several people in my general vicinity started displaying signs of irritability due to the tight quarters. The show I saw was A Christmas Story, and while the classic movie translated to the stage better than I thought it would, I felt there were a few elements that should have been excluded - such as the racism in the Chinese restaurant scene, the sexism in just about every scene with women in it, the portrayal of smoking, and the overacting (even for a community theater production where part of the appeal is the campiness) that I honestly don't remember being present in previous shows I have been to. One last thing - if you are going to do a show that features a firearm (even an unloaded BB gun) for f*ck's sake please educate your actors on proper handling. As a food blooger, this rating is based on the food served at the dinner theater - if I were rating the performance, 5 stars all the way. Some of the best ideas happen over a cup of coffee. That's actually how this whole guest blogging/co-review feature week came together. Many months ago (as in, October), Jenny, who writes Choice City Native and I had a meeting to chat over coffee. She had introduced herself when I spoke about being a Professional Blogger at Beet Street's Art Cafe and suggested we go out for coffee sometime. I thought that was a fabulous idea, especially since I cannot shut up about how much I love blogging, and here I had someone who was willing to listen (not to mention someone who understood what blogging was all about!). In this coffee talk, Jenny came up with the idea to do a review together. It took getting over the holidays to finally pull it all together, but we did, and ended up going to Carousel Dinner Theater to see Smokey Joe's Cafe. I couldn't have been more excited, because this is somewhere I've wanted to go ever since they opened after renovations earlier this year, and I would have been dragging The Husband's dead body along with me. I really liked what I saw when I walked into the dinner theater, with a very cool art deco feel to it. It reminded me of a mini-Vegas where we used to go see dinner shows back in the day when we lived there. Once we were seated inches from the stage, and in awe of how packed it was - a completely full house - I promptly opened the menu and got down to business. Carousel Dinner Theater is a lot of fun for a special night out. At $39-$49 a ticket that includes entrees, $20 extra for drinks, appetizers and dessert, and a suggested (and well deserved) 18% gratuity - it's not a cheap date, by any means. But, I still think it's a great experience and well worth the price. The food might not all be amazing, but the entertainment totally is. I'm really glad that a simple meeting with Jenny for a latte resulted in a fun night at the Carousel Dinner Theater. read more

Went to see South Pacific. The show was great. The singing and acting were excellent, and there were some exceptional voices. The ensemble, especially the men, had great energy and personality. The 4-piece orchestra produced some impressive music. I would definitely return for another show As an earlier reviewer mentioned, the space is intimate enough that there really isn't a bad seat in the house. The meal is served before the show and dessert is served during intermission, so you can (and are encouraged to) turn your chair to face the stage while the show is going on. The food is what brings the rating down a notch. However, it's an Arts Center and not a restaurant. The focus is clearly on maintaining the high quality of acting, singing, and music. read more

My husband and I went to see Grease on Saturday evening. We have been to MAC a number of times before this. The last time we went was, we realize now, a "warning." This time will be our absolute last time attending anything at Midtown Arts Center in Fort Collins. First a general complaint - they pack you in like sardines. There is absolutely no room to comfortably sit at your table. Now for our experience. We knew the evening was going to be a complete disaster the moment our server came to our table. He obviously was 100% uninterested in being a server. My husband ordered the shrimp cocktail for an app and the burger with no onion, and an ice cream sundae for dessert. The server quipped, "the onion comes on the side." OK...? I ordered a Coke, the spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and the ice cream sundae for dessert. The shrimp cocktail came and my husband ate it. He thought the shrimp "tasted old." Stay tuned for what happened later that night after we got home... Two orders of spaghetti and meatballs were delivered to our table. Our original server entered the order wrong. I still hadn't received my Coke. When the correct meals finally came, the spaghetti and "meatballs" (four, laughably small meatballs) were inedible. WAY TOO SPICY. TOTALLY GROSS. I asked for my Coke, and another server brought it for me. My husband's burger had a hard bun, a stupid throw-away piece of "lettuce," and the meat was dry. TOTALLY GROSS. Because my meal was inedible, I asked for plain spaghetti with butter, which our original server brought. This is the last time we saw our server. The pasta had a weird taste. Guess they rely on the over the top spicy sauce to cover up that nasty taste. Then the show started. Now, I am a HUGE fan of Grease. I've literally seen the movie 500 times, and I was so excited to see a live performance of my beloved movie. I. HATED. IT. I hated everything about this production. Sorry, but it was awful acting, the sequence was wrong, the band was too loud, the casting of the characters was horrible. I told my husband less than 30 minutes into the show that I hated it and wanted to leave after we ate our ice cream at intermission. He agreed. Intermission FINALLY came and so did our ice cream. The ice cream was the best food of our meals. Hard to screw up ice cream. We quickly ate the sundaes and left before the lights went down for Part 2. Once we got home, my husband started feeling sick. He had FOOD POISONING from the shrimp cocktail. What a FANTASTIC ending to a horrific experience. We will NEVER go back to Midtown Arts Center in Fort Collins. And I'm going to tell all my friends to not waste their money or time on going. I wouldn't agree to go back even if we were given free tickets. The place has declined from just a few years ago. We enjoy going to dinner theaters, and we are so glad there are other options in the area. read more

They do not put any energy into the dinner which is ironic because it's a dinner theatre establishment. Cold food, chewy food, and just the general bad taste the food left in our mouths transferred to the show. Show was in the ballroom, so it was cramped and the wait staff was just looking at us as additional cash machined and we were treated as such. If you purchased extras things, you are served decently, if you didn't, you were glared at. All in all a disappointing experience. Only 3 stars because the show was enjoyable. 1 star for food, 2 stars for service. read more

Food: Veges were mushy. Toasted almond cheesecake was awful... whipped foam with almond flavor. Cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory is cheaper and real! Coffee and tea are extra even with paying over $50 for ticket. Seating: they pack you in like sardines! You feel like you're a part of the conversation of the table next to you. West Side Story: An all around poor experience from the waitress/ actress that didn't seem to want to be there to the production itself. A couple of characters held their own, but most were total rookies. The food was nothing to brag about, but was edible. I hadn't been to MAC in a bit, but was not disappointed. This was by far the best show I have seen there. So much energy from all of the actors. The band was awesome, too. While I never think much of the food in dinner theaters , I had the shrimp and salmon, both were delicious. I am sure the actors/servers were exhausted by night's end as they never took a break and enjoyed banter with all of the surrounding tables. These young people deserve lots of credit! The tables were very tight and had a bit of trouble positioning chairs to see performance, but managed it alright. Thanks ! read more

Once: Better than the Movie! My wife and I saw the movie a few years ago and really enjoyed it but we both found the musical play version much better. Once tells the story of a street musician and Czech immigrant who meet on the streets of Dublin. He is ready to give up music but she, the Czech immigrant and piano player, encourages him to record his songs. The first song they played together, "falling slowing," had great harmony and was just as good as the recording. Also, "when my mind is made up" had great harmony and band backup. It was also as good as the recording. All the music and musicians were fantastic! The set was essentially a bar with 15 or so musical instruments at various locations (mandolin, ukulele, guitars, accordion, bass, violin, cello, drums) and musicians who would play and sing when needed. We were enthralled by the performance especially the singing and acting by the male and female lead. This is must see for all who enjoy music at its best. I would recommend sitting as close as possible to the stage so you can see facial expressions and feel part of the set. We were right next to the stage. The food was OK and the atmosphere and sound were great. This is the fourth time in my life I have had pork shank and every time it has been at Midtown. You can't beat it. read more

As a Fort Collins native, I only recently got around to going to a show at Carousel Dinner Theater- what an AMAZING experience! And such a bargain! Dinner and a show for $40- that's unbeatable! I took my mom to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on Mother's Day and a few months later took my friend to see High School Musical. Both were AMAZING shows and the food is excellent! The waiters are the actors, so its great to have your favorite characters serving you dessert and coffee at the intermission. The best part is that its small and the stage design is great so there is not a bad seat in the house. I am a HUGE fan. Try the almond cheesecake. I'm daydreaming about it right now all the way back in Boston. And I just bought my tickets for this winter's showing of White Christmas- can't wait! read more

Once I found the Carousel Dinner Theater things went smoothly but since there was no sign and they had moved from their previous location, I was glad I had come up from Denver early. The new theater space is a lot better. There is more room and it is more comfortable to watch the show. Dinner was o.k. but the show was really good which is what I was looking forward to. I also like the fact that the servers are the performers because I can talk to them about the show. All in all the Carousel Dinner Theater is a nice change of pace for a theater experience. read more

Love love love! I see a LOT of theatre. All the local dinner theaters as well and Denver and Broadway. Midtown puts on an EXCELLENT show. The food is not the best, but you're not there for the food! And if the quality of the food really offends you that much I think you can buy tickets without it. Really the quality of the shows midtown produces cannot be matched in this part of the state though, especially in the last couple years. They just keep getting better and better! read more

Color me impressed. Not only is your waitstaff attentive, they're in the show too!! Talk about double duty. The food was good and the show was amazing (Avenue Q). My boyfriend and I came a little later than suggested, but we hadn't missed anything and the seating isn't a first-come, first-served scenario, it's already been set up. The signature drinks were Avenue Q themed, and the meal over all was satisfactory. You get what you pay for. It was a little awkward sharing a table with strangers but you get over that quick. I thought it was hilarious when a couple was upset about the show's content (they were expecting something a little different involving puppets apparently). If it wasn't so far, I'd come here again. Apparently they do a Dinner Detective too which could be pretty fun! read more

I've been here a few times to see a specific play, but 'Les Mis' prompted us to buy season tickets. The three stars are for the talent pool; amazing acting. The rest is okay, my personal opinion is that the theater lacks warmth. The staff seems so busy there is no real time to spend at each table, I felt rushed giving my order. The tables are very close together, so close that the staff cannot get in to serve you and if you're at a 6-top you have to pass your plate or cup to the end for clearing or serving. I'm not crazy about the salad and dressing on the side being at the table when you arrive; no choice of soup or salad and who knows how long it's been there, or who has touched it on the way in? Turns out soft drinks/tea/coffee are not included in the price of tickets which was disappointing and the plastic glasses on the table a little cheap. The food is good and the desserts are certainly worth the price. I did have the Irish coffee and it was too much Irish and not enough coffee, I did let them know and they apologized but didn't offer to fix it and I still had to pay for it. However, I will go because the acting is wonderful. We recognized a couple of actors from 'Les Mis' in other productions from other playhouses and that's always a pleasure. I am looking forward to the season because they are some of my favorites, like 'White Christmas' and 'South Pacific'. I'll just avoid the drinks and be wary of the salad. :-) read more

SO disappointing. I still cannot figure out what went wrong, exactly. As my wife commented afterward, "I wanted to leave after the intermission, but thought I'd just stick it out". We should have left. Every time we go to MAC, the performance rooms get smaller and smaller. This was set in what I believe is called "Theatre Two". Some would call this an intimate setting . . . . I would call it claustrophobic. There were nine tables with eight seated at each table. It worked, but only until you had to turn your chair to face the stage head-on. The chairs were NOT suitably padded for a 3 hour plus performance. By the time we (and others, I noticed) left, we were NUMB and ACHING. The dinner was BLAH. This was SO the OPPOSITE of Merry and Bright last Christmas (see my review). PLUS, dessert and coffee, plus a suggested $12 tip for the performers added an extra $35 to the $110 for the dinner and performance. We went to the performance tonight with such high hopes and expectations; you can believe it took a really miserable time to overcome we we thought would be a great time, but this show managed. Kudos to the performers for trying hard, but the spark just wasn't there. Some of the singers were SO vocal in their performance in such a tiny area that at times it was painful to be so close. read more

I saw My Fair Lady at Midtown. The show itself was excellent. The actress playing Eliza was especially good. If this had been solely a play, not a dinner theatre, I would give it 5 stars. On the downside, the seating was cramped so I was unable to turn my chair to face the stage. The meal is included in the price, but you pay extra for dessert and drinks. You are expected to tip for the value of the meal in addition to any extras that you choose to order, and our waiter got extremely rude when he thought he was going to be stiffed on the tip. His behavior spoiled the second half of the show for us. I would not go back to this theatre. Not surprised they are closing. read more

Just saw Ragtime with my husband. We're regulars at Midtown Arts Center; in fact, we were regulars back when it was The Carousel.The show was great - very talented performers. But the dinner? Yikes! I had chicken parmigiana. This is the third performance in a row where the dinner was pretty bad. Food from any fast food joint would have been far better than what I was served. The spaghetti was under-cooked and coated in oil. And the chicken patty was way over-cooked - very dry and crunchy. The mixed vegetables were exactly what I have in my freezer (broccoli, cauliflower, and carrot mix), only they cooked them to death and then didn't even bother with any seasonings. I know they have a lot of people to feed, but seriously. I expect a meal that matches the caliber of the show. I think next time, I might have to smuggle in food from another restaurant. Pity. They used to care about serving unique and delicious dishes. read more

A little disappointed with Mary Poppins. My first time to visit Midtown. Took along two children. Got there at around 12p. Intermission not until 3pm. (We left the center at intermission) The only thing good about our party of 5's food was the salad. All of the rest of the food was horrible. I would suggest to sticking with foods that are cold. The acting was substandard and the music was just okay. The dinner theater was a good concept, however I would suggest serving dinner during the play to cut down on the actual time that you are present. Yawn! read more

I was very disappointed in this visit to the Midtowns Arts Center. The performance, crazy as it was, was very well done and we enjoyed it. The food and overall cleanliness of the theater did not measures up. The pasta in vodka was tasteless but hot (not in temperature), the women's restroom was dirty around the stools upon our arrival at the theater and the walls inside the theater were dusty. For a ticket price of $60+ I think they could have done a better job. Lately, it seems like the portion sizes have decreased and guests leave hungry even with the additional purchases of appetizers and desserts. One more thing, we did order the Artichoke and Spinach dip and it was excellent. read more

Awful! Save your money! What they call the ballroom is a dirty cramped room with a setting at each end and in the middle. You have to constantly turn around to see what's going on at each end. But you can't turn your chair cuz it's too cramped. Sore neck and back by the end of the night. Buffet food that looked like it had been scraped off the floor so we ordered the upgrade. The steak was good but not worth the additional $$. We saw Patsy Cline, $140 for 2 tickets and it was maybe a $30 show. First time there and it was a horrible experience. Complete waste of hard earned money! . Will never return. Take a bit further drive and go to the Boulder Dinner Theater or the Denver Center for Performing Arts. Have never been disappointed at either of those places. read more

My wife an I went to Midtown Art Center last week for the opening of "Once". What a great experience. The performances were very impressive. Your meal is served to you by either a waiter/waitress or one of the performers. This makes you feel more involved with the show. The food and drinks were great (I had the pork). Also, after the show you have the opportunity to meet the whole cast and thank them for their hard work. We plan to return for "A Christmas Story" this winter. Highly recommend! read more

Just returned home from taking my family to see Mary Poppins. The food was cold and tasteless, the program reminded us of a high school musical, and there was smoke churning out onto the stage throughout the show (they said it was to make the lights reflect). We left at intermission with sore throats from the smoke, and my Grandson had an asthma attack because the smoke filled the entire theatre. There was a "sellout" crowd but many others left when we did. A real disappointment - we saw "Spamalot" and enjoyed it but this evening was a total dud. read more

In early April I purchased 2 tickets for Matilda for a June 22nd show. I happened to look on the Midtown Arts Center website recently and saw another show advertised for the date of my Matilda tickets. I checked my inbox and my spam folder but found no email from Midtown Arts. I called the box office during the very limited time they're open and learned that indeed the show was canceled and that many people did not receive notification. I asked for a refund and was told that she would put my name on a spreadsheet for management to approve. I got the impression that a refund was not guaranteed. I asked when I should expect to receive a refund and was told 3 weeks ("if" it's approved)! What? The refund should have been automatically applied when they made the decision to cancel the show. This being my first experience with Midtown Arts, I asked how often they cancel shows for which they've already sold tickets. The woman at the box office told me this is the third one this year. I've attended many live theaters over the years but this is a first. I will never purchase tickets from Midtown Arts again. read more

I just saw my second show at Midtown Arts Center and am continually impressed with the caliber of theater that Midtown offers. My first experience was 'Next to Normal' which was so emotionally powerful and thoroughly enjoyable. I had the Gorgonzola pasta dish which was delish. I was actually craving that for our recent outing to go see "Avenue Q'. I ended up getting a new chicken dish which was SO GOOD. 'Avenue Q' was hysterical and Midtown did a great job preparing me for the type of content in the show. Perfectly inappropriate and right up my alley. Thank you Midtown for bringing quality theater to Fort Collins and northern Colorado! read more

This was quite possibly the worst theatrical experience I've ever had in 30+ years. While a dinner theater, which in and of itself tends to be hokey and weird, let's focus on the show first. Horrid acting, deplorable dancing, less than mediocre singing with the exception of possibly two characters, torturous sets and costumes, wiggly, wavering lights and unpredictable sound...the list goes on. I finish terrible movies, I read terrible books through to the very last page, and I've only ever once walked physically out of a theater in the middle of a performance. Today, if I hadn't been forced to sit through this production due to work and family obligations I would have been in my car after the opening act. Truly. It was just that bad. We're talking about the Midtown Arts Center's 2013 rendition of a White Christmas. Think the absolute worst high school theater performance ever...then aim lower. The venue is nondescript. Weird layout, no art (not even a scrap of color on the walls). Actually without the holiday décor I'd imagine this place would resemble an event space you might find in North Korea. The staff, while polite, were also strange. The food was a plated version of the buffet food you'd experience at a third-rate hotel conference. Salad was wilted, dressing was straight vinegar, chicken (strangely the best part) was average, mashed potatoes were cold, green beans were undercooked (read: solid as a rock), and we all experienced a mystery vegetable on our plates. Turned out to be some form of squash (looked like watermelon) and the only reason we know what it actually is, is because we asked a server who had to go to the KITCHEN to discover what it actually was. Her guess...wait for it...beets. Not so much. Other guests at the table experienced the penne pasta sitting in a bowl of cream sauce water broth with random pine nuts or a grisly, fat ham slice with mystery vegetables again. Should have paid the ridiculous upcharge for real food options. Maybe. Highlights - the four glasses of wine it took to survive this evenings performance, the gift of a borrowed lighter from the bartender to smoke away some tears, the almond cheesecake, and the conclusion of this disaster. Have no fear - they even ruined the ending by forcing us into a pre-planned encore which was included in the playbill. No standing ovations here - just a collaborative standing rush for the door. read more

Just went to see "A Christmas Story" last night. The show was excellent. My food was very poor, bland and COLD. And the worst part was that we were packed in like sardines. We barely had room to eat, let alone watch the show. We had to manipulate the chairs so that we could just SEE the show. The service was just okay, but I understand how hard it is for musical theatre performers to wait tables and then go try to perform. They have lots on their minds. However, the service certainly could have been better. We were handed the incorrect check for our meal as was the couple across the table from us. I was expecting a much better experience and did NOT get it. read more

If I were to rate just the show itself, it would be 5 stars...without question. However, a simple seating mistake on the venue's part has become their undoing on this rating. After calling the venue personnaly to ensure we had our desired seats a few weeks in advance, we were assured that we would be seated next to our friends and all would be well. We arrive at the venue to find that these arrangements were never made on the venue's end. Confusion and a LONG waiting process ensured, during which we were ignored by our waiter and personally berated by the ticketing manager. We were informed by said manager that had our requests actually been taken care of, our friends would have received a new ticket confirmation. Without this confirmation, we were to assume that the requested arrangements had not been completed. This was all delivered to us in a "shame on you" type of fashion. There was no apology, even though it was the VENUE'S error. We were not people who had randomly decided at show time that we wanted to sit together. We had done our due dilligence weeks prior to show time. It is my understanding as a patron that I should not need to double check that you as the venue have done your job.Although the show was spectaculor, we will certainly hesitate before ever even considering attending another event, as we aren't interested in being berated a second time if/when another seating error occurs. read more

Attended Miss Saigon in November and learned about their brunch on Sunday's. Since Fort Collins is definitely lacking in a true brunch I was really excited about this and decided this is how I wanted to celebrate my birthday. Attempted to book on the website and eventually figured out that reservations had to be made through the box office. After several attempts over a week, someone eventually called back and initially said that there wasn't a brunch on the weekend I wanted to make reservations and that they were only doing brunch once a month. 10 minutes later, someone called back saying that there was going to be a brunch on my desired weekend and reservations were made and payment was required upfront. Myself as well as my friends and family were excited about this. 3 days before brunch, staff called saying that it was being cancelled as there weren't enough reservations due to their technical difficulties. Then they expected to move the reservations to the following weekend and didn't offer to refund the money. I am really disappointed in the lack of professionalism as well as how disorganized they are. Very disappointed. read more

I am basing this rating on the service & food. The dancing is always a treat, but the singing is a lot to be desired. Our 1st show was Smoky Joe's, which had a couple of grand male performances, & only one female stood out with a showstopper 'Fools..' The other women in the cast were awkward or off-pitch compared to the one. As for the entertainment quality of the shows, they are hit or miss. 42nd Street's dancing was fantastic, Tony and Tina's was a mess, Next to Normal, the leads were fantastic. Avenue Q was a delight, Sound of Music was excrutiating for such a classic.The kids were good, Maria was spunky and fun to watch, but the Captain was painfully stiff as a board. In the Heights, I wanted to see again, it had great energy! Recently, Forever Plaid was fun, but the food was cold, small portions, very disappointing. The service was slow, & our waitstaff was not in the show, but had enough time to chat with her coworkers while we waited for drinks. I find myself enjoying Candlelight better, the food, the venue, &the overall service and entertainment quality. read more

Inconsistent shows, ok service, bad food. I have seen 3 shows now, 'White Christmas' which was a joy, but terrible service. The waitress was in a hurry to chat with her friends and didn't know how to smile. She was very annoyed when we asked for anything, and she seemed bored maybe because she wasn't a performer in the show (which I always look forward to). Our next show was 'Sound of Music,' which made me keep looking at my watch for it to be over! Maria was very good, great energy, the kids were cute, but the Captain was monotone and I swear I was watching a zombie. This show just dragged on for such a classic. I just saw 'SOM' at the Candlelight this last week, and it was far more professiona and much better food and servicel!!! Go down the road to Candelight! Legally Blonde was mediocre, some good dancing, good lead character, but some of the cameo parts were for the birds like I was watching a high school production. The food was cold and took forever. Been here a few times with friends. We have seen Hairspray, Sound of Music, Les Miserables & White Christmas. It's really touch and go with the quality of show, food, and staff. I don't think we have had all three above standards at the same time. You never know what to expect from what we have experienced from the performers. Loud, shouty singers, sub par acting, but good dancing. Sound of Music was LONG, food was poor, as well as the slow service. Maybe because he was busy in the show. Les Miserables had some excellent performances, Jean Valjean, which I've seen perform at other places around Colorado was heart felt, but some of the comic characters were trying way to hard for the laughs. I've seen better but I guess it's not fair to compare this community theater to the Denver Center. White Christmas has decent dancing, fun show BUT food was cold and not much flavor. I'm not crazy about next year's shows,or the long sales pitch before the show, so I don't think I'll be back. read more
