Amazing movie experience! Tucked deep inside the old AMC building--with a cute coffee shop out…read morefront--it's easy to miss that there are multiple floors of movie theaters inside. We just saw the new Avatar movie in IMAX, and the theater was almost empty. The lack of crowds is clearly because not many people know this place exists... which I secretly hope stays that way (though I do want it to stay open, hence this review!). The seats are very comfortable, and everything was clean, including the bathrooms. A friendly door greeter made the whole experience super easy and welcoming. We purchased popcorn and a soda, and instead of a staffed concession stand, you're given a container to fill at a self-serve station near your theater. Pro tip: get the small popcorn--you can refill it as many times as you want The soda fountain is also self-serve and stocked with more choices than you could possibly need, including plenty of diet options, which is great if you're watching your sugar intake. Refills are unlimited too!

The concession stand is located on the 2nd floor, which has a variety of classic candies, snacks and more. Just a heads up that the staff is strict with restricting outside food, so they will hold onto anything you do bring from outside so that you can pick it up as you're leaving. The popcorn and drinks are self-serve, which is located to the left area of the concession stand once you pick up your bucket and drink cups. It's very easy to fill up your popcorn and drinks - for popcorn, there is also the butter valve option here. The escalators will take you up to your theater - my friends and I watched Project Hail Mary and were seated higher up towards to back row section. The chairs are very comfy and I felt relaxed while watching the movie (which is about 2.5 hours long!). The bathrooms are located on the 2nd floor and are well-maintained and clean. I enjoyed my experience here and highly recommend checking it out.

Watched "Wicked: For Good" here…read more The parking garage just below the theater was a convenient place to park. Note: they no longer validate parking. However, $11 for a few hours or parking wasn't bad considering the ease of finding a space and proximity to the theater. It was nice to see security (SFPD) at the front door. The theater's facilities feel outdated compared to other venues out there. Its age is very apparent. The old, creaky cloth seats were a quite distracting when anyone around you moved a bit. The movie screen and sound system were fine though. Consessions - the popcorn was just OK. 1/2 of our large container was just crumbs. Perhaps they scooped from the bottom? The sugar-free ginger ale was empty at one of the self-serve soda machines. Despite all this, it was still good to be at the historic AMC Kabuki 8 theater which has been around for over 50-60 years. It'a always fun to be in Japantown San Francisco!

We luckily got to sit on the balcony in theater 1 which had the best seats. The theater is so clean and has reclining seats and the staff is super nice too. I love the location of this theater because it is in the heart of Jtown and surrounded by yummy food and fun stores. There is also street parking around the neighborhood and a decent parking garage.

We decided to go for Devil Wears Prada 2 and should have known things were off when arriving and saw that the security gate was broken and we had to duck under it to get inside. Okay for us, but would have been difficult for anyone with physical ailments. We then learned that the bar doesn't open until 5, but not to worry because we could order drinks from our seats. When we arrived to our theater we were greeted and offered a glass of water. All seemed okay until they informed us that their popcorn machine was broken and there was no popcorn! My mouth dropped as the huge tins of popcorn are the main reason I loved Alamo! Overall the movie was good and we ordered a subpar pizza instead, but it wasn't quite worth going to the movies without popcorn. They offered us a voucher but I'll call ahead to ensure the popcorn machine is working next time.

Be aware regarding inconsistent enforcement of entry policies…read more It appears that some staff members allow customers to enter for movies after a certain time, while others strictly enforce a cutoff like the male staff on a power trip and who "has been working here for 5 years" This lack of consistency creates confusion and sets conflicting expectations for customers. The staff explained how its written online in the terms and conditions and then pointed to an area in the small ticketing booth. Customers purchase tickets online and are unlikely to review detailed terms presented in small print. Relying solely on this form of communication is insufficient, especially when enforcement varies between staff. If this policy is to be enforced, it should be communicated clearly and applied consistently across all staff members. And way more visible in the entrance area and walls of the theatre.

But indeed I returned but 1 hour later- not for more movies, no. I've had my fill of those for a while. No, sir. The siren's song which called my name was the salted Popcorn special, A Heated Hotdog, and a cold drink of water. I was welcomed back by the staff and they even let me eat my bounty in the lobby. I played another round of Attica to boot and then I engaged a short and confident staff member with devilish good looks and freckles in riveting conversation. I told him about a dream I had. In it, I ate my hand, then my arm, and my shoulder and chest. Before long, all I saw was blackness. I dreamed in pure blackness for hours, unable to wake. He only allowed me to stay and speak to him for a short spell though before asking me RESOLUTELY and PROFESSIONALLY to leave again. Talk about a tight run ship! That guy is manager material. But at 7 pm I once again heard the siren's song and drove the 1 hour back to the Balboa. My new friend was gone, Christian I think his name was. Now instead there was a younger man with fetching glasses. He too let me dine only and not have to sit through a movie to earn my prize! This time I ate 1 Salted popcorn Special and 4 Heated Hotdogs. (The young fellow said, "hey you can probably get all this stuff for cheaper at the store." Psh! This Weiner ain't no Oscar Meyer standard faire camping dog. This thing is good good good! No mustard, No Ketchup, No Water to dunk it, just good Beef Dog.) I couldn't finish my last Dog. I offered it to the handsome kid, but he said no too. So I went into the auditorium to offer it to another Theater Patron. I only asked 1 RUDE man if he'd like the Dog. Who gets mad when they're offered free dinner?? The young bespectacled man lead me out of the room. Boy was right behind me, fast and agile. Kid could be a burglar. He asked me ALSO VERY KINDLY to please go now. Attica? No. Quick Game? No again. Wasn't allowed. I found a dog on the street outside and she sure was happy to take the leftover Hotdog that I coudlnt finish. Isn't that Ironic?

The exterior doesn't look like much, but the interior is full of character and old school charm, quirky decor and movie posters throughout, and a diverse range of showings happening here from indie films to cult classics. The auditorium seating is pretty basic, standard cinema folding seats with cupholders. Sound and picture quality was fine, nothing noteworthy but no problems during the set of short films we watched. The concessions stand sells popcorn, nachos, soft pretzels, hot dogs, ice cream, candy, and beverages. And merchandise was also sold in the lobby this past Sunday. Staff interaction was minimal, as it's a small theater in which we prepurchased tickets and had plenty of seats to choose from in the auditorium when we arrived. The venue was fitting for the event we attended.

Quick take: 3.5/5 Good option for catching movies no longer…read moreshowing at major chains, but seating comfort is a major drawback. Small screen, very uncomfortable seating for taller people, slightly worn restrooms, and challenging parking. Arrive early for seating. In detail: I went to Presidio Movie Theater on a Wednesday night to watch a movie that was no longer available at AMC that week, which was the main reason I chose this theater. The screen is relatively small. It feels standard for a neighborhood theater, but noticeably smaller if you are used to larger cinema chains. The biggest issue for me was the seating. I am 6'1", and the seat back only supported about three fifths of my upper body. Sitting upright while trying to maintain proper neck and back support was uncomfortable throughout the movie. The restrooms were another disappointment. They felt outdated and not particularly well maintained, similar to old gas station restrooms. I purchased my ticket through the Fandango app. There is no assigned seating, so for popular movies or showtimes, arriving early is important to secure a decent seat. Parking was more difficult than usual. Many of the surrounding townhouses have driveways, which significantly limits available street parking around the block.

Orange cushy stadium seats that provide extremely minimal head-blockage Best part about this cinema has got to be their restrooms - no lie! Never in my life did I think I'd be all goo-goo-eyed over a bathroom but this 1 is the bees knees! They have the most luxurious toilet seats - they're *heated* ( ! ) and offer bidet functions for those who prefer that kind of action....there were so many buttons on this thing that I was scared to push anything for fear of setting off the disco lights.....and coming in from a frigid cold, blustry evening, I didn't want to leave that heated seat! :-) I'd totally come back here to see fantastic indie picks & can't wait to see what's playing next!

I found the facilities to be quite inviting. It's basement level and feels sequestered from the outside world (as it should), like a hi-tech vault to showcase and preserve humanity's best culture for the post-apocalypse future. I mean, it looks like a spaceship inside. It's swank and modern. It's comfortable and well-equipped. I did hear a few complaints about the seats being too lean-y and lacking arm rests, but I found them soft and well-spaced, and the sound and projection were great. My stuff looked great on screen. It was the perfect size for a post-show Q&A- 143 seats holds a crowd but not an impersonal one. The hosts were incredibly gracious and caring about the show they were putting on. This place doesn't organize shows like amateurs (trust me, I've done those.) If you're thinking of seeing a show here, it's probably something you wouldn't see anywhere else, so you might not know how to judge it. Consider yourself in good hands. It will be curated with taste. There's tons of great options for eating and shmoozing afterward right across the street, in Japantown's mall full of sushi places. One of my co-attendees is well versed in quality sushi, and called the place we went to one of the best she had found in the city. Pick this theater and neighborhood for a great night out.

While it's much closer to home, the Tanforan theater is still living in the stone ages with their seats. Daly City has since done a full remodel, switching to the "luxury lounger" electric reclining chairs. Depending on the movie and show times, we're more than willing to drive the extra distance to have those super comfy chairs! The theater itself is pretty big, featuring 20 screens spanning across multiple levels. You enter from Junipero Serra Blvd where there's a box office to purchase tickets on-site. They have the standard red text digital screen displaying all the movie times, and you select your seats right there at the window. If you purchased your tickets digitally, you can walk straight to the far doors where they'll scan your tickets. **Note that they no longer automatically print out ticket stubs if you scan a digital ticket. If you want one, you can ask, though it looks more like a receipt now than the traditional stub. As soon as you enter, you go up a giant escalator to get to the main level. The main level has the most / biggest theaters (IMAX / XD), the snack shop, as well as the arcade. The snack shop features all the standard options you'd expect to see at a theater: popcorn, kettle corn, hotdogs, nachos, candy, soda, ICEE, plus ice cream and other frozen treats! Up at the front, they have special drinks such as coffee (latte, cappuccino, mocha, caramel macchiato - hot or iced), chai latte, tea, caramel frappe, and hot chocolate. They advertise for pizza, though I've never seen them out. Maybe you have to ask? They also have a bar! Pretty basic, but solid options: Draft beer (Blue Moon, 805, Michelob Ultra, Modelo Especial, Sierra Nevada), cans (Guiness, Stella, White Claw, Angry Orchard, Athletic Run Wild IPA & Upside Dawn, Ballast Point Sculpin, Bud Light, Truly Strawberry Lemonade, Twisted Tea) wine (red & white), and frozen cocktails! The arcade is decent, featuring some standard games like air hockey, Ms. Pac-man / Galaga, Aliens shoot-em-up, Super Shot basketball game, Batman and motorcycle racing, and a cool Star Wars game where you get into a little enclosed pod. They also have a good amount of claw and other prize games. There are even more theaters on the 3rd floor, which is accessible by another large escalator, or a literal mountain of stairs. They have a smaller snack shop up there, though I haven't seen it in use the last few visits, so I'm not sure if they ever use it anymore these days. I definitely remember times where it was not only open, but busy! Both levels have (nice & clean) bathrooms, and they're also accessible via elevator. If you're driving in, there's plenty of free parking in an attached multi-level garage. I recommend parking on the 2nd floor - you can exit the theater from the back on the main level, and it connects you directly to that level of the garage! There are also several restaurants right there, including Round Table, Westlake Coffee Shop, Cold Stone, sushi, ramen, and a giant seafood buffet that likely has both of those things and more. I definitely recommend seeing a movie at the Century 20 Daly City - it's clean, comfortable, the staff's friendly, and it's an all around good experience. Come out and support the theater!
