I have been going to Even Keel for many years. I was tattooed by Kyle years ago when he was at Black Rose and I was thrilled to hear he opened his own shop. Denny has been tattooing me for 15+ years and he has never ceased to amaze me with his amazing ideas and talent. Even Keel is a truly unique shop, no proprietary attitudes or "too cool" personas. Just a group of genuine guys doing amazing work. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming and always entertaining as hell. Even though my husband and I have since moved out of state, we still travel back to get tattooed (seriously, they're that good) I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for great work and a welcoming environment. I had a great experience getting my first artwork done with Erik Guy (@erikguytattoos). First off, the shop just moved across the street. No they're not closed just wanted to make a nicer space. Secondly Erik was awesome. Communicated a lot to help get my artwork sketched out right had great feedback and did a lot of work on his own time. He was flexible around my travel days in San Diego and he also works in Hermosa often so that's good to know too. The new space was coming together while i was there. The music was on blast, the guys were having fun and it was a great vibe. I had zero issues with the process. The prep and execution were great. A little over three hours total and i've got my amazing homage to my beloved Washington Capitals finally winning the Stanley Cup. Super easy process. Very thorough. Very solid guy and amazing artist. I started following Nate on instagram about a year ago cause of all the awesome work he does. When it came time to finally having the funds to do the cover up I wanted I reached out to him. He was very professional. When we met up for our consultation I didn't have any idea of what I wanted. Had a small idea but wasn't sure if it would work. To be honest I wasn't really worried about it because of the talent he has. But, what I presented to him was able to work. So I gave him free range to make it how he felt was best. What he had drawn up was on point. We booked an appointment asap and got started on it. He is super efficient and his prices are great. Just finished my last session today. I've waited about a year to post this review as I've tried to live with the tattoo and experience I had at this place. It's too long of a story, and I don't HATE it, I have grown to love it, but suffice it to say that the tattoo artist was so disrespectful of my feelings, my questions, and ultimately my wishes. I asked for the thinest needle possible he swore what he used was, I have since found out there are thinner ones available. He refused to help with the design for my tattoo, granted I should have known exactly what I wanted when I walked in but guess changing one's mind or being unsure isn't expected or accepted. To top it off he was drinking the whole time and didn't quite connect the lines on my VERY linear design. I should have left the minute I got a bad feeling about this guy but alas that is on me. My advice: follow your gut, know what you want to get permanently inked on your body and for Pete's sake do some research before you walk into a tattoo parlor! read more

Even Keel is a fantastic little shop in Pacific Beach. The shop is clean, well lit, with artwork all over the walls, and you really feel at home in there. Their chairs are really comfy, and they offer memory foam pillows if you are laying on your back for a tattoo, which is a really nice touch! The four artists who work there are incredibly friendly, helpful people. They really care about what they do, and know their strengths and weaknesses. I walked in seeking a couple of traditional nautical tattoos, and was introduced to Tim Howell, who specializes in American Traditional. He is, by far, the best tattoo artist I have ever worked with. He is fast, efficient, his workmanship is impeccable, and he keeps the conversation going while he's working. He tattooed both my elbows, as well as swallows on my chest, and they have come out amazingly. He even offered to touch up my elbows a bit when I came in for my swallows a few weeks later, and really brought the color out in them. I highly recommend him. The other three, Nate, Kyle, and Denny are all amazing, their work is also on point, and my friends who have been tattooed by them have had great results also.
