I'm a regular at Cafe 16 - Definitely one of the best lunch spots on Microsoft's campus. Wide variety! The lines can get long and move pretty slow though. Pro tip: Try to come in before noon to beat the lunch rush. Ordering by 11:45am can make a huge difference in the time it takes to get your food. My faves here are the FLAME grill and the Himalayan Station. FLAME has a variety of well-seasoned, fresh grilled meats (I always get salmon with grilled vegetables). And the Himalayan station usually rotates classic Indian dishes like Butter Chicken, Lamb Vindaloo, and more. You can't go wrong with Café 16. Just try to beat the lines :) read more

This is my daily lunch cafe. In my 10 years at Microsoft, this is the best cafe ever. This cafe boasts of some fixed stations and some rotating stations: Fixed stations: 1. Salad Bar : Boooring 2. Custom Salads/Poke/Potato Spud thingy - This is usually good. The Poke is expensive at $12.5 + tax(I would prefer just poke at this price). The custom salads are good. 3. Pizza - Nice whole wheat pizzas 4. Grill - The grill usually has specials which are great Rotating: THURSDAYS is where its at! Himalaya is the bomb, I have been eating Himalaya for the last 100 Thursdays, no exaggeration. One of the more popular Microsoft cafeterias with a broad selection of food choices. Although this place does become extremely loud and crowded with long lines. I chose Chef's Table as they whip up a new dish everyday and seemed the most unique. Today was Braised Oxtail, with roasted root vegetables, braised reduction sauce, wilted bitter greens, and fresh mint cream ($9.99). It was tasty, and they even plated the dish! Have to say the dish wasn't super filling, but oxtail is an expensive meat. The oxtail would have been even better had it been braised longer to the point the meat easily fell off of the bone. Outdoor seating is perfect when the weather is nice too! Lots of tables to sit next to the fountains and, depending on the season, cherry blossoms, blooming flowers, or trees with changing leaves in the fall. read more

Microsoft Café 16 is stellar. Arguably, this is the best cafeteria on campus. There was a recent renovation done on this spot that has done wonders. The makeover was so good that the site, Business Insider ran an article of their tour of this facility that spread to other web outlets. I had not been to this café in a long time. I did work across the street a number of years ago and recall the look of the old café. Seating was not an issue, but the food stations were. It always got to be super crowded during lunch time. The lines that formed made it difficult to maneuver to the station that you wanted to go. The café itself did also feel a bit old and like you were eating in a company cafeteria. I am glad that the renovation took these issues into account when making changes. The new look of the space makes me feel like I am in a dining hall or food court. There is noticeably better lighting and it feels a lot more open. The food stations now operate like they are its own separate restaurants. There is an exhibition kitchen in front along with a pizza place that makes authentic Naples-style pizzas (for under $6 BTW!). To the sides are the salad bar, a coffee shop that makes fresh baked goods, a burger place and a local restaurant space. The local restaurant spot is a rotating space in which a popular restaurant brings their food to the Microsoft campus. Notable restaurants that participate in this program include Bitterroot BBQ and Oma Bap. Being a tech company, there were also technological improvements. Some of the food stations have a self-service kiosk in which you submit your food order and pay. This system kind of reminds me of eating in Japan in which you buy a ticket from a machine first. This allows staff to focus instead on preparing the food. I am not sure how paying by cash works here though. It seemed like paying by credit cards (recent addition at MS), meal card or by badge were the only options. After paying, you will get a receipt and your order number will show up on a video screen above in which you can track when your meal is ready. It is like a restaurant version of those gate stand-by passenger screens at the airport. The last thing I will mention is that you have the option of eating on a real plate here if dining in. At all of the other cafés that I have been to, this is not an option. This is good because it makes you feel like you are eating in a nice restaurant instead. The plates do not come with any real silverware though. A little weird eating food on a plate with a plastic fork, but it is better than eating on a paper plate like before. I hope MS will use the template of this café when making upgrades to other campus cafés. If I worked nearby here, I would feel less inclined to eat off campus since this café is so awesome. read more

Yasss. Shoutout to Chefs Austin and Jackie for a super fun evening of teaching our UCI group how to make fluffy potato gnocchis! Thanks y'all! Before our custom cooking class even began, we were delighted to help ourselves to the beautiful spread of appetizers set out for us. They had prepared: baked brie with bread, garlic knots, cinnamon knots, and warm and huge chocolate chip cookies, all of which complemented the refreshing italian soda perfectly. During our cooking lesson, they were both so patient and explained each step of the preparation with grace and humor. And, at the end, we had the best brown butter and sage potato gnocchis and alfredo gnocchis, all made from scratch. Although this cafe is farther than others from where I work, I will be back to try it out. I also heard there are top secret daily specials, so I am so ready to try that! read more

Every single Microsoft cafe has good bits and bad bits. The good: The coffee shop - they bake the goodies on site. They can't make a cappuchino to save their lives, but the baked goodies are great! Aside from the coffee shop, I enjoy the chefs table, salad bar, and some of the rotating world food selections. There is also a rotating food truck outside. The bad: The burgers - seriously. It isn't that hard yet they screw it up every single time, and they are slow. The sandwich shop is slow, but the food is actually pretty good. read more

One of the best cafes on Microsoft campus, with a HUGE amount of variety. There's two rotating themed stations, with my favorites being the pho and Indian food. I will also frequent the sandwich station, think subways except much more options and cheaper (guacamole is not an extra charge) and the salad bar. Pizzas are very good as well, Neapolitan style in a wood fired oven, and there's also always a chefs table station with a new surprise and the grill station. Overall, just a great places with lots of choices. It can get pretty crowded, so try to avoid peak hours (noon to 1pm). read more

One of my favorite cafes at microsoft! It has a wide range of options, and great outdoor seating. They have a better salad bar than most cafes (in terms of options and freshness). Besides the salad bar, I have had the pizza, and the quesadillas. Both were very good! The only downside is that it can get pretty busy, and 16 is a cool building so sometimes there will be your groups coming through. read more

It's a nice pleasure to have a cafe on campus that is putting out some quality food and service in a building cafe. An incredible cafe with delicious food and amazing staff. First, a quick shout out to Kris, Mariela, Nick Mike, Austin, and all the great chefs and workers in the cafe. You are terrific! The food here is great. The Chef's table never ceases to disappoint. My "go-to" is the flame grill where I order the seasonal fish nearly every time I go. I also love the salad bar. The new Poke bar is top notch also (although I wish they would use coconut aminos in sun for the soy sauce). The prices are terrific. Since I was working in the building next door, Cafe 16 was my go-to place on campus...and after trying all the others, I'd say this one was one of my favorites! Salad bar, Chef's Special, Rotational Local Restaurant, Sushi, Taco bowls, pizza, pho... I'll talk about my favorite two. First off, the salad bar. This was my favorite place just because there were so many toppings to choose, and since they cap it at $8.99 you can just pile on the goods and get two meals out of it. As a little intern, this was the best deal (and the healthiest)! Next, the pizza!! Loved getting their pizza because you could also have unlimited toppings and sauces, and great taste+bake for less than $7! Sometimes I would come here early for their breakfast. Loved coming in for their free morning drinks paired with a nice scramble or breakfast sandwich. Perfect cafe ambience to start off the work day! read more

Café 16 has a decent selection. There's pizza, subs, and salads. The rotating local restaurants are hit or miss, though. They do offer good options for vegetarians. Their hours for serving food are also pretty limited. You'll need a badge to get in. If you work in building 34, Café 34 will be closer and offers much the same food. There's not much of a reason to visit here unless you work in 16 or 17. read more

This is truly "as good as it gets" in any corporate cafeteria. My office is 3 doors down from here and I am truly grateful for this every day. Nearly everything is made to order - salads, daily entrées, pizza, meat/seafood, burgers, and sandwiches are all made from scratch and to-order. You pay via credit card, putting in exactly what you want, and that order gets filled with a surprisingly high amount of accuracy. The chef's table station is probably my favorite. Here you will find everything from fresh pasta (made by hand, no less), to pork tenderloin, to risotto, to specialty tacos, to fresh steelhead and salmon. Elijah, the executive chef, is usually working this station. Our lunch group calls him "Chef Ramsay" due to his heavy English accent and impeccable standards. Seriously this guy is great - he worked as the executive chef of Newcastle Golf Club before this, and his passion and talent for food really do show through. The risotto that they serve is probably my favorite dish in the café. The pizza is Neapolitan-style, and delicious. The sandwiches are great, in particular the meatball subs that rotate in every once and awhile. The burgers are fairly average, I don't care for them. The Flame station is very busy and so I rarely order from there, but where else can you get a NY strip or seared scallops for $6.95 with sides that actually tastes good? Frankly I'd eat at café 16 for dinner if I could. The food is exceptional, and is arguably better than a run-of-the-mill restaurant. If you get a chance to come here, don't pass on the opportunity. read more

Great food and cheap prices! The market special is a good deal if you want healthier, smaller portions. The salad and soup bars are good, pizza and burgers are freshly made to order, and as always the drinks are free! The service is a little slower but who wants to go back to work so soon? The indoor seating gets a bit crowded but they have a decent amount of outdoor seating but I'm sure not many people will use it outside of the summer months. It gets crowded, come early if you are in a rush! read more
