I use this post office regularly. Tonight I walked there (in the wind and rain) with a large, awkwardly shaped heavy parcel & some smaller ones. It was close to closing time but I saw on Google they closed at 5.30, so I decided to rush down. Got there at 5.23 and the shop was closed. There was a lady inside so I knocked on the door, hoping I could leave the parcels there overnight & come back in the morning to pay if necessary. The lady opened the door but was very bad tempered. I said I was really sorry but I thought they were open until 5.30 and it would be hard to get this parcel home again. I explained I had smaller ones too. She took me to the counter, then said my big parcel wasn't wrapped properly and wouldn't be taken(I had used a bin bag because of it's size, but it was taped up firmly and labelled properly with extra padding). I said ok I would buy 2 large jiffy bags and wrap it in those. She said no I should use tape to cover it completely. So I start taping it up. Then she says "it's 5.32 now" and just stares at me. I said "Do you want me to just go? Shall I pay for the tape and leave?". She says "yes ,I'm going to miss my bus now" so I left £2.50 on the counter and she escorts me out of the shop. So I'm left with all of my parcels and £2.50 worse off. I'm also left wondering how she could be late for her bus when she wasn't meant to close until 5.30 - unless of course, she shut the shop early to go home early. That was definitely the impression I got. The whole thing was just totally unnecessary and rude. Some manners and listening skills would have been appreciated. I had to add a review for Micklegate Post Office as the staff are so friendly, it's pleasure to go in. Sadly my local village post office succumbed to the recent closures, I believe this was earmarked to close too - I could be wrong here - but was one of only a handful saved due to pressure from residents. The staff no matter how busy, are always pleasant and helpful and never, ever huff when you ask for proof of posting! I make a diversion to post anything from here. read more

I am afraid I have to agree with the experence of the lady in 2011 as my experience has been similar. The lady who I understand to be the owner of this post office has a brusk & unfriendly attitude towards me, which has occured over the last year or so on more than one occasion - I might add that her cold attitude has also been extended to my husband on occasion. This last recent time, I was really quite upset about it. I am at a loss to understand why she has this attitude as I have always been very pleasant to her and my husband and I have put hundreds of pounds of business their way over the years. I trade on Ebay and have purchased mailing boxes and stationery from this shop as well as the eventual Royal Mail & Parcel Force postage. We make it our business to support local & small businesses and very surprised that a small post office is not more appreciative of what we are trying to do. I hope the lady in question reads and takes note of these observations and bears them in mind for her other customers, though for my part, I regret to say that I will be walking a little further on in future and take my business to the main post office in York. read more

The staff here, I have been told, are really friendly. Experience leads me to disagree. They are only friendly when you give them your money. I have to use a smartstamp system at work. When using the special delivery smartstamp, you have to take parcels to a post office. Micklegate is our nearest one. Well they don't like that at all. I have had them blatantly fiddle their scales (the further towards the front you put a parcel, the more the scales will say it weighs, see the physics of levers if you don't get it), forcing me to re-print my postage (and pay for it all over again) and on another occasion, after having to carry over 6kg of parcels to their post office, I have had both members of staff categorically have a go at me and refuse to give me any assistance because they claim they aren't getting any money from the smartstamp. With a bad back I had to trudge back to work with these parcels and ended up sending them by courier. This is incredibly short sighted of Micklegate staff, as I have no control over where my employer buys postage from, but I CAN control where I buy my own postage, and having my own business on the side it was handy for me to be able to post things here. I now have withdrawn my custom, as they're only nice to you at Micklegate when you're paying them, but when there's no witnesses they'll show their true colours.
