Locco…read moreEspresso located at 1/2 Queensport Road, Murrarie is a recently opened destination coffee stop for all the locals; a coffee shop that locals have been craving for a very long time. The lovely owner, who is a mother of 3 has always had a passion for food & coffee, & finally opened her humble cafe abode only 3 months ago. They currently serve a small range of delicious snacks & cakes, as well as tea but the most exciting news is that in 2 weeks time, they will be serving hot breakfasts!!We are so looking forward to that! This cafe is also kid friendly, as it has a large outside area for families to sit down & catch up with friends while the kids play. Locco Espresso serve delicious Di Bella coffees- Felici, which is a beautiful dark roast coffee, with subtle acidity & flavours & aroma of dark chocolate which instantly wakes you up & warms your belly. They are perfectionists when making coffee, so you will never get a bad one! Here I had the flat white with almond milk & the homemade coconut & mango bread which was SO DELICOUS!!! If you live locally or near the area, you must check them out for a coffee!! Thanks to the ladies from Bambi & Beck and We heart Coffe (in Morningside) for recommending this place. Love supporting small business. Locco Espresso is Located across from the Murrarie train station and Open everyday: MONDAY TO FRIDAY: 5.30am till 2.00pm SATURDAY/SUNDAY: 7.00am till 11.00am

Nothing fancy about this place. Their menu is pretty excessive - so you have options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you like. My husband and I opted for the "Cajun Wedges with sour cream and guacamole" to share as our afternoon snack (we had a small breakfast and no lunch). The servings were heapful, and I'm impressed that we even had some of the sour cream and guacamole left over! Guacamole is very lemony, which I like. Staff were friendly and when I had enquired if they could make a "Dirty Chai" for me, the cashier checked with me by explaining what it is (shot of espresso coffee into a chai latte). Great! They have the menus on random tables so just grab one if you want to sit down and read it first before you order at the counter. Some bakery options, including a couple GF items (Byron Bay cookies, chocolate sticky date pudding, caramel slice when we were there).

The Merlo coffee was excellently prepared and the "Boutique Breakfast" of scrambled eggs, hash browns, tomato, toast and bacon was sufficient and though the eggs were over beaten and tough, the rest was fine. The staff were friendly, welcoming and fast and they didn't even seem to mind my noisy tot. I will definitely be returning for a coffee next time I want somewhere more sheltered and less exposed to passers-by.

I've made a few trips to Penny, some just for coffee (takeaway and sit down) and a few with food…read more Across the board, Penny is outstanding in terms of Brisbane's cafe scene. The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.
