I was briefly recording outside when the door staff told me no videos or pictures were allowed inside the bar--totally fine, no issue with that. Once we walked in, the bartender immediately told us we needed to buy drinks if we wanted to be there. That was already the plan, so the comment felt unnecessary but we brushed it off. Things escalated when one person in our group was simply texting on her phone. The bartender lowered the music and yelled over the mic that no pictures or videos were allowed. We were not taking photos or videos at all. Meanwhile, the door staff continued staring at us as if we were doing something wrong. If they didn't want our business, they should have simply turned us away at the door instead of wasting our time. Overall, the staff came across as rude and overly aggressive for no reason. The atmosphere felt tense and uninviting, which is not what you expect when visiting a new place. Plenty of other bars nearby where you're treated kindly--this just wasn't one of them.

Inside, there was a pianist leading a room full of people singing Christmas songs together ,it felt spontaneous, lively, and genuinely joyful. What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into us staying much longer than planned. I must have been a smiling fool in the 2nd row seats, but music, personally, is the best way to get through me. Years in music myself, I understand the dedication and commitment it takes. You FEEL that here when they are on stage performing. Jazz and its spontaneity and history is the cornerstone to Preservation Hall. I LOVE that there is no recording/picture taking allowed (unless the artists strictly tell you otherwise). It helps keep their art intact but helps immerse yourselves with them into their craft. Living in the moment. The last song they kindly let us record/take pictures and I will treasure them until I can come back. When I arrived, our IDs were checked and then we were let in. AFTER we were let in, two people let us know there was a 10 dollar cover. Whatever. I already paid for the show so am I really just gonna leave there? I ask to pay with card, and am told there's tax on it. Sure. I get it. Electronic payments are all catalogued so it makes sense there's tax. However, I see the itemized bill as it's being brought up. It says "$11 cover". There's a separate line for the tax under it, but I was definitely charged 11 for a cover PLUS tax after that. I ask the workers if there's a mistake, and they say it's the tax. I point out that the tax is below that, and then they say something along the lines of "you're acting like we want to rob you, I don't get any money out of this." The place to insert my card is then pulled away from me as I am removing my card from it to pay, and am told "You don't have to pay for it if you don't want". As I already paid, I point it out and I am offered a refund. At this point, I just want this to be over and I enter the courtyard, down $44 dollars for a show I thought would only be $20. As I enter, I hear them yell "douche" over and over at me. This sort of soured the night for me and we left soon after that. If you're a regular here then I'm sure you enjoy it, but it is not for new people and it is definitely not a welcoming environment. The food smelled good at least.

Unfortunately, the VIP experience was underwhelming, to say the least. No seating, no added perks--just access to a "private" bar that wasn't much different from the general one. So here's a little tip from me to you: skip the VIP at this venue. It's not worth the upgrade--save your money and thank me later.

So by 12pm many people were grabbing their checks and heading out. The bar is really nice and even if you can't sit on the carousel, the bar area is nice too! The bartenders are super nice and friendly. Great customer service and everyone we sat next to was friendly and welcoming. The drinks aren't the best per say but you go for the atmosphere.
