Sure, bigger cities have bigger shops with more selection, but Chautauqua Comics offers everything a local (or visitor/tourist) might need from a comic shop... Plenty of appealing stuff in stock, pull lists, special orders, special events, gaming and whatnot. It's a tiny little shop and the staff keeps a lot of stuff on display. Once you learn the layout and where they keep the sort of stuff you're looking for, it'll prove itself a useful resource for comics, toys and card games.

Unfortunately, the experience went downhill the moment I walked in. One employee immediately gave me a harsh look and stared at me from across the room. I didn't even realize he worked there at first, so I tried to move out of his line of sight. Another employee eventually approached me, and I explained that it was my first visit and I wanted to look around before asking questions. He was friendly and helpful -- I honestly wish he had been the one assisting me the whole time. Instead, the first employee eventually came over and asked if I needed anything, but his tone and body language made me feel unwelcome, as if he wanted me to leave rather than browse. It took the excitement out of what should have been a fun first visit. Bottom line: the store itself was great, but the attitude from that particular employee made the experience uncomfortable and disappointing.

The mall closes at 6 and we didn't get to their door until then. They were nice enough to let us get our games, didn't rush us or have an attitude at all, and the girl was super nice to our kids! My husband was trying a phone case on his phone and apparently left his phone on the counter when we left. We were almost outside of the mall, and the nice guy came running with it!! Located just off Peach Street about 1 1/2 miles from I-90 I found Mel & Tee's easy enough. The front half of the store is mainly a hobby shop, some cool stuff but not what I was looking for. Luckily there is a door to the back of the store which is stuffed with a wide variety of items, collectibles, furniture, home goods and enough to keep you looking for a little while. For me the only item that interested me was a vintage wood stick puppet from Java/Indonesia. The puppet stood out as a very unique and high-quality item, although it did have a bit of damage to one of the hands. The price was about right, but a bit more then I wanted to spend. Luckily I started talking to the very nice lady at the register and she said that they were willing to deal on the item. I made a bid at the lower end of what I thought was fair and she accepted. I ended up getting a great one-of-a-kind item at great price. If you are looking to check out a local thrift store in Erie, Pa. I would suggest giving Mel & Tee's a try, not the biggest place but the fun is finding something you never expected; also really nice when you can negotiate a bit to get what you want.
