I have a…read morebit of a torturous habit of wandering into interior design shops and planning all the rooms in a home which simply doesn't exist. I do not own my own, nor am I likely to for some time, so it really isn't good for the old self esteem! Nevertheless I can appreciate these places as I please, and it does indeed please me to say that Maison have some utterly delightful items inside their store. The first items which struck me were their lovely collection of lampshades and cushions, sat delicately in the shop window. With the embroidered hearts on ivory cushions, a beautiful white bureau to accompany the gorgeous lampshades and matching draft excluders to go with the cushions, I don't think any living space could be less inviting! The majority of their stock seems aimed towards a more country cottage, homely style than anything else, and it's just lovely. This country home feel is perfectly matched in the little town of Ilkley, so it's no big surprise that this is what they are selling, but that's not to say you won't be intrigued. They have interiors for virtually any room, from beautiful dining tables and chairs, kitchen crockery cabinets, bed frames and more; they have enough that you could fill the whole house with their goods, allowing that cosy, lovable theme to continue throughout! The shop has an Aladdins cave feel with 4 or 5 rooms opening out from each other. They stock smaller items such as lights, tableware, pictures, cushions etc and have some elements of their furniture range on site with more on line. The cafe is a great place to hang out and try some of their furniture by sitting on it while you enjoy your food/drink. Lots of different tea pigs flavours to try and lots of cake too.

I'm guessing the first one is plain stupid (well stupid is as stupid does) so I got y sorry looking butt down to Red Brick Mill. What a pleasant find it is too. They pride themselves on some of the North's leading contemporary designers and their furniture is sheer class. They are home to 35 cutting-edge designers and there is enough inspiration to keep even my motor mouth quiet for an hour or so. If you want to jazz up your lounge, no problem. Slick and chic sofas sit along side funky tables. You'll even find plush flooring, cookware and gifts. It's quite pricey but sometimes money does buy taste and it shows here. Add to that four cafes to refresh those flagging shopping legs and it's worth a punt. A definite reason to venture into Batley and spruce up the house in your life.

From cleaning products, kitchen items, DIY bits and bobs, cheap snacks, cards and so much more - they've got it covered. If you're a keen shopper/browser it's a veritable treasure chest to explore. My particular favourite is the upstairs section. Here's where the items get slightly less bargainous and become a little higher end... They've beds, lamps and all other kinds of home furnishings in a range of styles. Faux-antique right through to the more modern sleek look. I bought an awesome 'telephone box' lamp for my room at home, which is so kitsch and delightful and only set me back £15. (I can imagine it costing a ton more in a vintage shop!) My Mum was particularly overjoyed with a red painted vase that she picked up as well, of which they had many different shades! So, there's plenty to get excited about, and not too pricey as well. However, all that glitters is not gold. I did come away having purchased a few oil reed scent dispensers (the pots of oils with the wooden reeds) and they simply don't work at all. They were only a pound each, but I can see why they were so cheap as they give off no scent at all! Even so, I'm pleased as punch with my lamp so that more than makes up for it!

The only thing I can say lets it down is a lack of electrical goods like TV's but if you're looking for a pack of brass tacks and a birthday card for auntie Mabel this is a good place to start........ and if you're feeling tired you can nip upstairs and pretend you're testing a bed out :)

The level of service we have received from start to finish has been exceptional. Communication was excellent regarding the initial measuring up, to the design, to visiting the showroom to finalise plans and book in the job, to daily updates on progress and plans for the next day and being available whenever required to help accommodate changes. The guys even gave up their Saturdays and worked into the evenings some days to make sure that progress stayed on track. The entire HHI team have been hard working, polite, trustworthy, punctual, reliable, understanding, and accommodating to last minute changes. They really couldn't have done more for us and nothing was too much trouble. The selection of products and services available is vast and the level of expertise you receive is high. Every small detail has been considered and it's clear to see that the team take pride in what they do, they are all perfectionists with a passion for their trades. The quality and standard of finish is second to none and we really could not be happier with our new bedroom, en-suite bathroom and storage rooms.
