No response. My friend who had referred me, gave me his specific email - nothing. I called one last time and got the attorney my friend was using only to find out he wasn't the one I'd spoken with (I had conversed with several attorneys and had not written his name down as all others had sent follow up paperwork & I had assumed this would go the same way)....... anyway, I spoke with my friend's attorney & asked him if he could speak with the attorney I'd spoken to because I wanted to hire him or would have to go with someone else due to time constraints. I never received a call back. I guess what I'd like to say is that if they couldn't have taken me on as a client I never should had been offered a consultation (which I paid for btw & believe I should be refunded for). Perhaps they were not comfortable taking on a domestic partnership case? I don't know, but It would have been nice to have been offered an explanation as to why no one ever got back to me, or as to why you would offer someone a consultation and sound so positive about representing someone and then never bother to respond again? It is just absolutely not a way to do business, or treat someone in this type of situation. Incredibly disappointing.

He couldn't be bothered to review the information I went to a lot of trouble to provide him and completely disregarded what I told him were my priorities. That's not to say he never worked hard. He worked hard to convince me to let go of things that were extremely important to me (like shared custody of the kids) because he told me they simply weren't going to happen. I realize now that he simply wasn't going to try. And he seemed to have a special gift for finding ways for me to spend extra thousands of dollars (like hiring a CPA to prepare a statement of my premarital net worth) which he then dismissed as useless. All that hard work must have tired him out because he needed to take a bunch of vacations. Most of which just happened to fall the week before some important hearing or deadline. We had one lovely little hearing together, prior to which my ex-wife's lawyer had presented three pages of arguments to the judge. I asked Bob to write up a response and even prepared notes with copies of corresponding evidence to show how each of the statements was demonstrably false. He told me he didn't feel like writing up a response. He said if I wanted one written I'd have to do it myself. Once we were in the hearing, he did nothing more than stand up and sit down when the judge entered and left. I could go on for pages, but you get the idea. My divorce couldn't have been more expensive or painful. You might be able to find a worse lawyer, but you'd probably have to be okay with spending a ton less.

However, we were disappointed when she was only interested in representing us on a claim for defective service of the notice, even though we can prove the house is an illegal rental, is uninhabitable, and landlord retaliation. She responded: "I may be able to represent you on a defective notice. However, at this time, I am not willing to represent you on any of the other claims or defenses you may have for eviction case." I emailed back trying to verify how the service was defective and also confirming that if she represented us at our first appearance (mediation), since we have to file an answer same day, if she only represented us based on improper service we wouldn't be able to bring up our retaliation claim. She responded: "As I told you in my previous email, you may have a claim for defective service of the notice. It appears you want to bring up additional defenses/countercliams. As I have said in my previous email, I am not willing to represent you on these additional defense/counterclaims. Please contact another attorney if you are still looking for assistance." After sending pictures of the notice we received in the mail and her asking me *twice* how it was served, she should have been able to tell me if it was in fact defective service. I mean, this isn't rocket science folks! The laws are pretty clearly written and any knowledgeable lawyer should know this immediately. We were fully prepared to pay a retainer for her services if she chose to represent us, even though it appears her services are "free" to clients and payment comes from the landlord. It seemed like she was lazy and only wanted to represent us on an easy claim. We will pay to have a real lawyer represent us. I do not recommend her services and do not appreciate her wasting my time. Do yourself a favor a hire a real lawyer - not one of these contingency lawyers. You get what you pay for.
