Looking back, I believe there were other avenues that should have been discussed with me that could have resulted in a very different financial outcome. The most troubling part of my experience was my meeting with the bankruptcy trustee. I expected my attorney to advocate for me, explain what was happening when necessary, and step in when my interests needed to be protected. Instead, he sat silently while I struggled through the meeting. I remember looking directly at him for help toward the end, hoping he would speak up or provide some guidance. He said nothing, and the trustee simply moved on to the next case. That moment has stayed with me because I hired an attorney precisely so I would not have to navigate a complicated bankruptcy proceeding alone. I paid for professional representation and guidance, and I do not believe that is what I received. The financial consequences to me were significant, and I am still dealing with them. On top of all these things they made me email them to say what the terms were going to be so when they didn't like what I said they made me redo my email. I told her I needed to consult with the lawyer regarding purchase contract laws in California. She said she'll relay my inquiry to Atty. Simons and I should get a callback on Monday since their office was already closed for the day. After an hour though, Atty. Simons called me back. We spoke on the phone for about less than 10 minutes but within those 10 minutes, he was able to answer all the legal questions that I had and thoroughly explained what I need to do in regards to my situation. He mentioned that he wanted to clear up any misunderstanding of having to make an appointment just to pick up paperwork. He also mentioned that he wanted to write a edit the review but like I told him, I will check in again and write a separate review. So when I explained to him that I was there on the previous Friday to pick up the paperwork, and he had mentioned that he was working remotely. I also told him that I had sent him a text message stating that I was there in the waiting room. I waited for about 15 minutes or so. He however told me that he wasn't a 14 year old to be texting. When I told him about him stating that he was working remotely, which the attorney office next to him could clearly hear him speaking. Anyways, he never apologized for lying that he was working remotely. He did say that I should have knocked on the closed door. Mind you, I spoke to him on the phone. Grr. Well luckily, I hope to never have to deal with again. I finally picked up what I needed. Overall value, NOT WORTH IT!

He basically handed us a stack of confusing paperwork to fill out at home. He also told us to talk to our physicians and then write our own healthcare directives. We were foolish to pay him the retainer without doing more research about what exactly his fee included. His fees are less than most, but you get what you pay for. To anyone thinking about using him for these types of services, I would advise you to either spend more money and go to a better attorney or spend less money and do it on your own online. Edited to respond to his response: I am so disappointed to read Mr Beirne's response. He is flat out lying. Dozens of emails and numerous phone calls? I wish I could attach our email chain to this review. We had our initial consultation meeting, and then he sent us two emails--one thanking us for payment and the other telling us to fill out the lengthy stack of paperwork so that he could begin the process. He had our successor trustee information from our first meeting. That was not the confusing part of the paperwork. We never completed the paperwork and he never reached out to see if he could be of assistance. (After all, we were foolish and had already paid him in full.) This all took place in August 2013. We had no further contact about the estate planning. Fast forward to this summer. I began thinking about the money that we had wasted, and it was clear to us that we were not going to complete the estate planning process with him. I contacted him to see if we could get our retainer back since we had done no more work with him other than what would be comparable to the initial consultation which is advertised as free. He had the audacity to send me a check for less than 20% of the retainer. He kept over 80% of our retainer for the "free consultation" service. I also found it comical that he sent a bunch of non-personalized paperwork with the check to make it look as if he had spent many hours on our file. Honestly, I would have had more respect for him if he had just said that the retainer was non-refundable, but misrepresenting himself and coming up with fictitious hours to bill is infuriating. I don't often take the time to write reviews. The ones I do write are positive to let someone know how much I appreciate their services. In this case, though, I had to make an exception. I see that Mr. Beirne has other positive reviews, so if you still choose to use him after reading this, I hope that is your experience. Ours was the complete opposite.
