I have seen Dr. Gasser numerous times and the last time he saw me he told me I didn't need a new crown I appreciated his honesty. I also saw Dr. Ethel and was impressed with her thoroughness. I needed to find out if a procedure was covered by insurance and had to make three phone calls because no one called me back. I had a crown fall off and I had to call three times to schedule an emergency appointment. I can't figure out why this office has such good dentists and technicians and poor customer service. Went in due to problems and they basically forced me to do another procedure on the spot with local anesthetic and said I had to pay another $900 for it! On top of all that, the office manager, Nineva, was very dismissive and unempathetic. I wouldn't wish the past month of nightmares and pain on my worst enemy. The worst thing is I feel like all of this was probably avoidable. On the bright side, one of the dentists there, Jason Brenner, was very nice and did what he could for me. The oral surgeon was also professional in attitude, though I'm wary of his skills.

Upon entering The Stein Center I was greeted by a very nice front desk lady and offered sparkling or bottled water. It is a very nice environment for sure, but I expected more from meeting Dr. Stein. It was a very short visit and I quickly realized that I wasn't going to get timely and accurate care that I needed for my situation. It felt a little rushed and as if my concern was not really important to him. I won't get into all the details of it, but suggesting Botox doesn't really solve my dental issue. I didn't feel conditions were explained well. Perhaps for him...he works on more complex cases than mine and didn't fine my dental concerns important to him. They are important to me. Across three procedures from 2021 to 2025, after reviewing the history of my account, I was quoted a lower price each time and then billed more after the procedures were done. They blamed the insurance and the app they use to estimate, but the fact is they don't do pre-authorization for their quotes. For my recent procedure in 2025, they failed to disclose a prior denial for the same code and same tooth from 2021, yet still gave me a quote that was wrong and later told me the insurance "unexpectedly declined" the same code. They also pre-charged me before insurance finished processing, without my consent, which broke their own policy and added confusion to the bill. This left me questioning whether they already anticipated there would be a remaining balance - otherwise, the pre-charge and refund back doesn't make any sense. When I reviewed the documents they sent me, I also found another patient's EOB in my file. Overall, this office shows a pattern of low quoting followed by higher bills, lacks transparency in billing, and fails to safeguard patient privacy. If this is their standard practice, I can only imagine how many patients may have ended up with the same experience I had.

After that, I got a recommendation from a friend (whose father and father-in-law were both dentists) to check out Dr. Dave McWhinnie at Smiles of Skokie. I am so glad that I went here. The office staff and hygienists were all super friendly. After visiting way too many sketchy dentist offices in strip malls around Chicago, their office and facilities were a breath of fresh air. New equipment, bright exam rooms and nice decorations. Dr. Dave is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and really does talk you through each step of the exam and appointment. He wants to make sure you don't feel any pain at all. I had one dentist who attempted to numb me with anesthetic 3 different times, and I could still feel the drill. Dr. Dave did it once and I was good and numb in no time - didn't feel a thing. Finding a dentist you like and trust is incredibly difficult, I think. But I can assure you that if you go and check out Dr. Dave at Smiles of Skokie - your search will be over. Hope your experience is as good as mine was.
