The hummus is spiced with a good garlicky and turmeric taste. It's smooth and light. The baba ghanoush is also silky smooth, savory, and light garlic taste. The tzatziki was creamy, thick, herbal, and tangy. The pita! Fluffy, soft, toasted just right with a smoky taste! If you've never dolmas, but love southern bitter greens then this is perfect for you. These dolmas are rice and chicken stuffed grape leaves. It's savory, slightly bitter, and tangy. Over all food was great! Let's talk about the atmosphere. You go through the front door, down a green carpeted hallway and in the right, a wooden door like any other door. Open and go through, you've found the bar! Greeted with a large mural behind the bar of the Hollywood sign, small chandeliers and a pool table. It's a mix of old Hollywood meets disco club. Eclectic I would say. Is it a first date place? No, but it's a small foodie and bar that's great for hanging out outs! And MJ the owner is fantastic. Great host and says they will be doing Saturday theme days too! So be on the look out! Overall great food and divey place to hang out. Will come again.

Lots of activities at this bar: pool table, video games, back patio with tv, etc. the gyros were delicious as was the pita chips with tzatziki sauce.

Anyhow, we arrived and elected to sit at the bar versus a booth. Took a couple minutes to get noticed and we were asked to sit at the other end of the bar due to some clutter... Prices are very reasonable at this establishment. A flight was $7.50...if you were in WDM or Waukee, you would probably be looking at double that. They also brew their own beer and cider here; I'm not sure why that's not advertised heavier. Its called the "Gamble Block Brewery". I had Fear the Beard, the Baja Lager, the Maple Pumpkin Ale, and a cinnamon apple cider. The Maple pumpkin ale was delicious--the maple definitely hit on the back end. I was not a fan of the cider--they used a rather tart apple. The Fear the Beard (comparable to Blue Moon) and the Baja lager were OK. For food, I had the chicken tender basket with a 1/2 order of Texas Fries. I actually thought the ranch seasoning detracted from this dish--the queso was quite good and the bacon was plentiful. The downside to getting "sampler" versions of items was none of the accompaniments were included. My friend who got a full order of the Texas Fries was given sour cream with his food--mine did not. Also, on the beer sampler fruit wedges are served with the full size versions but not on the flight. The chicken tenders were very good and had the right breading/chicken ratio. The buffalo sauce packed a punch but was not obnoxiously spicy. The ranch that came with it was very good and was clearly made in-house. More of a 3.5 star review.

The fish is better than the Mile. Light, Crisp Breading with flaky cod fish. The curry sauce is very nice & add a surprising flavor that was so good. It's definitely oily, but hot and fresh. The breading stayed on and I love how it was crisp. The chicken is very good, tender and juicy with the crispy breading. I love this combo to be able try each. The fries were good as well, but just a distraction from the fish & chicken. I feel they could drain some of the oil off the food would help. For lunch it was plenty of food. The service was good and it wasn't very busy. Would definitely come back for the Fish or Chicken & Chips.

Really liked the Bavarian Stroganoff, which was delicious and one of their most popular options. Enjoyed German Meatloaf from a family member's plate, and the Pretzel Basket was great! German Chocolate Cake was great, but enormous. Topped it with French vanilla ice cream. Also enjoyed a side of German Potsto Salad. My only complaint is that the bar leaks well into the eating area, and our table was drowned out by a loud nearby group who were drunk and prevented us from having any level of conversation. That lessened the experience considerably.

Executive Chef/Managing Partner Jenny Symonds took over The Handlebar back in April I think and she brought her experience and a new menu with her. Being a little bit of a foodie I've followed Jenny through four previous steps in her career...so it was only a matter of time until I made it down to The Handlebar. Pulling in The Handlebar has an almost country market look to the property rather than a restaurant. It's cute. A HUGE parking lot, a large patio, and accommodations for bicycles. The decor inside is tasteful and modern. The dining area looked clean. Darn near spotless. A hostess greets you as you walk in and seats you. Along with a lunch and dinner menu they also offer a full bar. Seating inside is low top table and chairs and a bar and bar stools. A server both takes your order and presents you with your bill at the table. The menus aren't overwhelming but still cover all the bases (apps, sandwiches, other entrees, pizza, etc.). Comfort food to a few Asian spin/fusion dishes that I've come to expect on one of Jenny's menus. Today I ordered the bike tire tenderloin with a side of cucumber salad and a soda (Coke products) for dine-in and an order of the raspberry cheesecake egg rolls to go. Steve Roberts has a very good tenderloin just down the road in Redfield (Dexfield Diner & Pub). He has some BPT competition here...! The Handlebar's tenderloin is a little thinner but bigger around... There's a reason they call it the bike tire... They offer a second bun at no extra charge. Served burn your mouth hot and still steaming. Drained properly. Absolutely no residual grease to ruin the experience. I saw quite a few of them walked by me by staff today; you can tell it's a popular item. Both great tenderloins! And if you like tenderloins you should try one of each... Courtney was my server today and she did an excellent job from start to finish! I was surprised to see the amount of staff on site on a Sunday. There were at least four servers...maybe five and Chef Ryan was in the back. Evidently they haven't heard about the staffing shortage other places are having. Just kidding...! I'm sure they have...it's just not something they seem to be struggling with right now. The cucumber salad was cold and fresh. A nice break in between bites of the tenderloin. I wish the portion of the salad had been just a little bigger. I grew up in a town like Dallas Center, Actually quite a bit smaller than Dallas Center...but the same demographic of people (minus the bicycling community). A Casey's, a small downtown, and a smattering of businesses, and no stop lights. I was a little bit worried for The Handlebar venture with the changes Jenny might bring. Would she be able to please both the newer generation and maintain the older regulars? Yeah...I overthink things sometimes. I could tell by looking around today that it appears she has been successful with both. Older gentlemen (probably farmers taking a break from harvest) enjoying a Sunday meal by themselves and some with their family. Bicyclists both on the patio and dining inside... Dallas Center is a nice little community and especially pretty right now with it being Fall. I'd love to tell you those raspberry cheesecake egg rolls made it back to Clive...but with all transparency they only made it down a couple of side streets and around the city park. They are amazing! I've had them before. They were on one of Jenny's previous menus... Feel like getting out of the Des Moines metro for dinner? Enjoy the Fall colors and make the drive down to Dallas Center and check out The Handlebar! I know I'll be going back! That hot beef stack on the dinner menu... The picture of it on their Facebook page sure screams... OMG! Like and check out their Facebook page for hours, additional details, etc. https://www.facebook.com/thehandlebardc/
