The office itself is clean and organized, and the staff was generally polite, but my interaction with the main dentist left me disappointed. During my visit, I was hoping to move forward with a treatment plan that involved removing two teeth at a time rather than all four at once. I had already made a payment and was simply asking for a more gradual approach that I felt comfortable with. Unfortunately, I felt that my concerns weren't really heard or considered. The dentist came across as rushed and somewhat dismissive, and there wasn't much willingness to meet me halfway or discuss alternatives in a patient-centered way. As a patient, especially when dealing with something as serious as dental work, you want to feel respected, understood, and involved in the decision-making process. I'm sharing this not to attack anyone, but to give honest feedback. I believe communication and flexibility go a long way in healthcare, and I hope this is something that can be improved for future patients.

My 82-year-old mother waited two weeks for a referral to an oral surgeon to treat a bone graft…read moreinfection. Her dental history and X-rays were sent ahead by her family dentist. But upon check-in, the medical assistant told her the doctor required a CT scan. Since my mother is not fluent in English, she called me for help. She was distressed to learn the scan would cost $335 out-of-pocket--an unexpected burden for someone on a fixed income. I called the office and asked if I could speak with the doctor to understand the medical necessity of the CT scan, and whether he could first review her existing X-rays or take new ones before proceeding. I waited about 30 minutes for a callback. When the doctor finally called, he was unexpectedly aggressive and dismissive. He became irate as I asked questions, even after I explained that I was my mother's Power of Attorney and interpreter, simply advocating on her behalf. I was shocked by how quickly he took offense and how unprofessionally he responded. According to my mother, he became visibly angry after our call and told her, "I'm the doctor--you have no right to question me." Still, he said he would review her chart. Yet, within five minutes, my mom texted that he was insisting on the CT scan. I told her to go ahead, and I would pay for it. After the scan, the doctor called back and said he could "clean out the infection." I approved the treatment, but I couldn't overlook the way he had treated me earlier. When I calmly pointed out his tone had been harsh and dismissive, he suddenly said, "That's it, I can't do this anymore. Your mother can leave." He essentially dismissed my elderly mother from his practice--despite the fact that she was in pain and had been waiting weeks for care. To make things worse, when I requested a copy of the CT scan for the next provider, they said they couldn't give us one unless we brought a blank CD-ROM. When I asked about email, they replied, "We don't have that capability." The doctor walked away without further explanation. My mother, now crying and overwhelmed, asked to speak with him again--only to be told by staff, "He's no longer here." She was left heartbroken and confused, asking, "What did I do wrong? Why won't he talk to me?" To summarize: we were forced to pay for an expensive scan without a clear explanation or review of the results, were initially denied access to the images, and ultimately had to return to the office to pick up a copy--only to find the images weren't viewable due to software issues. This doctor showed no empathy, no patience, and no professionalism. His inability to handle even basic questions turned a stressful situation into a traumatic one. My mother left feeling deflated, anxious, and emotionally distraught. Her heart rate spiked due to her A-fib condition--she later told me it felt like her heart was "about to jump out of her chest." No one--especially a vulnerable, elderly, Asian woman who struggles with English--should be treated this way when seeking care for a painful infection.

Having multiple children who will need to have their wisdom teeth taken out, I had hoped to find a good oral surgeon and looked at reviews before making my decision. However, we were disappointed in our experience with Carolina Oral and Facial. The surgery itself was uneventful, but when we called with a simple question about whether it would be okay to alternate my daughter's medicine, Dr. Williams immediately angrily stated that nothing that my daughter was feeling had anything to do with what he had done. I have absolutely no idea why he seemed to feel attacked by such a simple question. He demanded to speak with my daughter and after aggressively asking her repetitive questions (leaving her in tears), I told him I would just call our pharmacist instead. Which is what I did, and it worked out well in the end, but it was a bit scary to know that I couldn't have a conversation with the person I had trusted to perform surgery on my child. Skill is obviously a very important trait in a doctor, but I am not comfortable and do not trust someone so unprofessional, so we will be seeking a new oral surgeon for my youngest child.
