Yes, yes, yes, and YES. I know all the cheese in the photos might be deceiving, but I promise you this is Mexican food you need to try. (I personally looooove me some CHEESE.) My favorite part is the portions. You get so much food!!! But what keeps me coming back is the vermicelli. I could literally drink it in a Hydroflask 24/7. I'm telling you-delicious. Most of the plates let you choose vermicelli and beans, but I always ask for double the vermicelli (as you can see my plate drowning in it's heaven). The Chile rellenos were the best I've ever had. We like putting the salsa on our main dishes as well so ask for extra! I recommend ordering a bit of everything and sharing because you need to try as much as possible. Growing up in the valley, there's not many authentic restaurants, so when I visit, I always have to go to Mexico City. Oh and FYI they only take cash! They do have an ATM there though! read more

The minute you walk into this cafe the party ambiance sidles up next to you and says "relax, it's a party" and the pretty lady who seats you, lets you know she's gonna see that your order is double quick. The food is authentic southern Mexico flavor so if you're in the mood for Nachos or Carne Asada, it will definitely hit the spot! read more

I frw months ago we went to dinner here. People from Denver wanting good Mexican food. We settled here. They don't have beef on their menu. What we had was very bad. They serve vermicelli, which is Italian, not Mexican. Vermicelli was dry and sticky pasta. Will not come back. read more

Tonight, my mom and i went into mexico city at around 7:45. when we came inside, they were putting chairs on tables and closing. we understand we came in later but this was making us feel rushed. we had asked our waitress for the avocado dip and they forgot it. once they brought our food out, we reminded them we had asked for it. when it came out it looked like it had been in the fridge for days. the "avocado dip" was just mashed up avocados. while we were eating, they continued to clean up (sweeping, mopping, stacking chairs, etc) continuing to make us feel very rushed. when we were finished with our dinner, we had to ask our waitress for the check twice. the check wasn't even the actual check out of the pads, it was a greasy piece of paper. used to be a great restaurant. read more

I asked in town at Lincare where was a good Mexican restaurant in La Junta. She highly recommended Mexico City. I easily found it and was the first person in for the evening. With Covid they were very good about masks. As they only take cash, they do have an ATM on the premises. The food was awesome! Reminded me of food I used to get in Denver when I was younger. I had bean tostadas and green chili. You can get it hot, mild or half and half. Portion was more than ample. Chips and salsa to begin with and you can get more salsa on request. The salsa is spicy not for the meak. Had a sopappillia (sp) (sorry) huge and so good. Had to come back the next night and tried a chile relleno also very good. I am bringing my brother next week when he gets here and I am going the next two nights. Yummy! read more

CASH ONLY!!!! NO ATM ON SITE!!! Nearest ATM on Colorado and 3rd/4th (less than 3 mins away). Was in town for work and decided to stop by here for dinner. I'm so glad I asked to be seated at the bar rather than sitting alone because I got a chance to chat with the jefe Robert. Drinks are so reasonable and strong (coming from Denver), and the food is delicious and reasonable as well. This is one of the few places that has food and also has drinks. Where do I begin? I love that this establishment has been around for a long time, was owned by Robert initially, he sold the business, and then bought it back a couple of years ago after his retirement. His wife/better half Mona is in charge in the kitchen. My first time having fideo (vermicelli) as a side item at a restaurant rather than friends' moms' home cooking. Not going to lie, the chips weren't anything special or stand out, but the salsa was delicious! Slightly spicy and chunky, just how I like it. The dinner plates are HOT! Don't touch it once they set it down, it really helps keep the yummy food hot. I had the #12, pork with avocado, it was kind of like an enchilada with tortilla rolled around the pork and avocado, topped with cheese and melted down by the heat. The food was well seasoned, and the sides with beans and fideo were both super tasty! I would just order the fideo by itself and eat a whole bowl of it, it was that good. I did not have the opportunity to get the sopapilla as it looked ginormous, but had I had more room in my tummy I would have ordered the sopa, it looked so tasty!!! The entire wait-staff were super nice and accommodating. Robert was extremely welcoming and shared stories of him growing up in the little town, as well as his travel stories with his wife on a Harley. I will definitely come back. The hours are like 11-2:30? and 5:30 - 8? Double check before you head down so it's for sure open for business, and always bring cash. :) read more

We were driving from Vail to Dallas and the roads were closed because of a blizzard so we were stranded in La Junta for a night. This restaurant was recommended by the folks at the Love's Country Store in La Junta so we came here tonight and had a wonderful hot meal. The chile relleno was nice and crispy and really flavorful. We also had cheese enchiladas, tamales, vermicelli & refried beans and everything was delicious. The chips and salsa were very good, too! The service was excellent and food arrived quickly. We finished with a massive sopapilla that was hot and fluffy and perfect with honey. The Cadillac margaritas made with Patron, reposado and Grand Marnier were outstanding. If you're ever in La Junta, please try out this gem of a restaurant! read more

We have been coming here for three years now and we LOVE their flavors and food combinations. The salsa is outstanding and the atmosphere is very family oriented with lots of locals and folks just passing through. Although we live several hours away, we come here as often as we can. Their Sangria Margaritas are a perfect summer libation and great compliment to their delicious food. This isn't Tex-Mex, but it uses the local favorites in their menu selections. I really hate to give bad reviews, but the following is worth mentioning: The queso appetizer was the exact nacho cheese out of a can that you eat at concession stands. I was totally shocked that they served this, especially after my father recommended this place after eating here during his road trips through Colorado. The service was good and the atmosphere was vibrant, so I want to be fair in pointing that out, but the queso was terrible and our enchilada's were nothing to write home about.... read more

We found this place via Yelp a year ago as we traveled home to Kansas from Gunnison. So glad we did! We liked it so much that this trip back to Colorado, we got up at 530 just to make sure we could have lunch at Mexico City. The salsa is very good, the Guacamole is excellent - no fillers, just flavorful avocados and perfect seasoning, and I could eat a plateful of their tamales! Looking forward to going back! read more

If I could give this place less than one star, be sure that I would. For starters, every bite of food was like eating out of a Morton salt shaker. Every entree was engulfed in salt. The "salad" that I ordered was 5 shreds of lettuce, covered in beans. The queso was cold and when I asked the server to heat it, she replied, why, is it cold? Umm, yes, that's why I asked for it to be heated . The topping to the dinner was the bill.. I ordered 2 margaritas, at the advertised price of, $5.99... when I shared the discrepancy with the OWNER, he tried to say that I had read the sign wrong, and charged me his ridiculous $12 a piece for lame margaritas. Trust me, if I wanted to spend that kind of money, I'd have bought tequila and made them at home!! Over all.. bad service, crummy food and very poor care in customer satisfaction! The food here was really tasty tonight. I had the 3 chicken enchilada special and my brother had the carnitas special. The food was fresh and had really good flavor. The vermicelli was off the hook good. Had the Cadillac Margarita to go with it and could not have been better. Top it off with the Sopapilla and honey!!! Really good dinner. There are a few places that I would recommend. Mexico City Cafe is one that comes highly recommended. Not only is the food GREAT, but even more impressive is the 'family' atmosphere that they are known for. This place is the best when I comes to the love that they share through their food as well as to their clientele. Good sit down place in a stand up Mexican restauant kind of town. Burritos and enchiladas are tasty with a preference for red instead of the regular around here green chili. Not sure what the vermicelli thing is about, it tastes like cut up angel hair pasta with ketchup sauce like you might make for a crying toddler that had no Italian relatives. Marguritas are good and affordable, mojitos are good too but are overpriced. read more

Finally a Mexican Restaurant in the Arkansas Valley that I'd be pleased to take my visiting friends and relatives to! Don't be shy by the outside appearance, it's definitely not representative of the atmosphere and food that you'll find in the oddly located neighborhood gem. We ordered Flautas and Enchiladas. Both had exception flavor and reasonable portions. Beans & Vermicelli had a nice flavor as well. Margaritas were spot-on. Pros are the incredibly friendly staff and inviting decor. The only cons would be no credit cards accepted, which is odd for a business in this era, and limited seating. Try to arrive early or get reservations when doing dinner. read more

The people are friendly and it is a bit chaotic but the drinks are tasty, if a bit heavy on syrup, and the food was very satisfying. I've been there 4 times and it was always good food and nice people. I think this is the best Mexican restaurant in town, so I am adding a star. read more

The only thing better than the food is the employees/atmosphere. Everyone is incredibly friendly and happy to serve you. I find myself eating here at least once a week. There are multiple things on the menu I love, and the margaritas are quality as well. Most of the reviews I see that are negative on here say stuff like "I ordered a salad and it was bad". Well yeah, this isn't Mad Greens, it's a Mexican Food restaurant. My recommendation is to get yourself some enchiladas smothered in green chili and a house margarita. read more
