The pronto machines can be a little wonky when trying to purchase a pass, however, there's always a staff member ready to help at the transit center. The staff take their jobs seriously both during small and large events. Serving as the main hub, there's a lot of people walking around here. It's come along way. But still smells pretty funky along the trolley station here. Security isn't very active here which I feel like the transit security should be. Instead, I saw 7 or 8 of them in a corner talking and standing around. I personally don't feel safe at this stop. There tends to always be sketchy individuals lurking here. I feel like I need to constantly scan my surroundings when I wait for the trolley here. There is a market that's open right here which is good can grab a drink or snack, etc. The trolley runs pretty frequent. It is centered for the blue, the orange line and the Greenline. But with that being said I really do try to avoid this stop if I can for those reasons.

The Santa Fe Depot was built by the bygone railroad of that name. I'm old enough to remember the advertising slogan "Ship and travel Santa Fe--all the way!" This is one of relatively few major railway stations that have both been preserved largely in their original form, and continue to serve rail passengers. It is a beautiful Mission-style building from the early 20th Century, and will give you a feel for what rail travel was like in its heyday. Gorgeous tile work and some nice landscaping make this a great place to wait for a train. (Search "Santa Fe Depot (San Diego)" on Wikipedia for more on its history and architecture.) For Amtrak passengers, this is a staffed station with ticketing and checked baggage services. Amtrak staff are courteous and helpful. The waiting room is large and has plenty of old-style bench seating. There is a designated waiting area for seniors and people with disabilities needing assistance in boarding. There are restrooms, but Amtrak often has difficulty in keeping unhoused people from making a mess or using the facilities for things other than immediate relief. So at times, not everyone will find them comfortable to use. In addition to the Trolley, the Santa Fe Depot is also served by several MTS bus lines. There is a paid parking lot run by a third-party provider. No free parking nearby. There is a small kiosk--the Silver Streak Cafe--selling food and drink. See my separate review.

We spent $20 per person and we got unlimited rides throughout the SDCC weekend. Some trolley stops have parking where you can leave your car parked for free and you can just hop on the trolley, however many do not. Regardless, the trolley is definitely helpful if you don't want drive and rather avoid parking fees. My favorite line is the Blue Line as it's less congested and covers a lot of DT San Diego, all the way to San Ysidro! I took the line from E street and it dropped me off at 12th and Imperial which wasn't too far from the Hilton next to the Convention Center. The Green Line was cool too but it's arguably the most popular route as it takes you directly to Old Town, the Convention Center, Seaport and other major destinations. Just be prepared to wait before you can actually board as odds are they'll be packed from door to door.

My ride was fairly quick, though not near as quick as the drive back once I bought the van. I was grateful that as a senior I rode for $1.25 one way. The ride was comfortable, with nice seats and I especially appreciated that the AC wasn't blasting cold air on me.Overall a great experience. I'm considering buying a senior pass and taking busses and trolley to save on gasoline costs.
