DO NOT RECOMMEND Serious Concerns Regarding Billing Practices and Unprofessional Conduct I am leaving this review because my experience with this office has gone far beyond a simple disagreement with a receptionist. I have had repeated issues with the front desk, specifically Shakila, involving dismissive communication, condescending behavior, hanging up on me, and an overall lack of professionalism. What happened today was the final straw. I had a 2:00 PM dental appointment today and took the day off from work specifically to attend it. Before my appointment, I called the office to confirm my financial responsibility. The treatment plan provided to me clearly showed $19.20 as my coinsurance/patient responsibility. When I called, Shakila told me that I owed $59. I asked a completely reasonable question: if my treatment plan states that my patient responsibility is $19.20, where is $59 coming from? Her first explanation was that insurance might bill a different amount later. When I questioned that explanation, she changed her explanation and told me that the $59 was because I had decided to do the "last tooth." That explanation was completely inconsistent with the treatment plan. I pointed out that changing the order in which a tooth is treated does not somehow make a stated $19.20 patient responsibility become $59. I told her that if the issue was supposedly the order of treatment, she could simply change the order and apply the patient responsibility reflected on the treatment plan. Suddenly, she agreed that it would be $19.20 and told me not to worry about it. Approximately two minutes later, she called me back and claimed that my insurance could not be verified and that my appointment therefore had to be canceled. She was argumentative and stated "what you can't pay a 20$ difference." First, it's a $39.8 difference. And second, yes I WILL NOT PAY what I DO NOT OWE. I knew my insurance was active. I pay for my dental insurance through my employer and had paid my premium for the month. I immediately contacted my insurance company myself. My insurance company confirmed that my coverage was active. My insurance company then contacted the dental office directly while I was on a three-way call. The behavior I witnessed during that call was extremely telling. Shakila's tone and demeanor were condescending and dismissive when speaking to me. Once she realized that my insurance representative was on the phone and could hear the conversation, her tone noticeably changed. That alone was incredibly unprofessional. She then stated that the office would not reschedule my appointment because of the way I had spoken to her. I find that explanation particularly disturbing given the way I have repeatedly been spoken to by this same employee. Patients are expected to remain respectful, but that standard applies to the people working in the office as well. A receptionist does not have the right to speak down to patients, dismiss legitimate billing questions, hang up on patients, or treat patients as though they are an inconvenience simply because they are asking questions about charges. What makes today's situation even more concerning is the sequence of events: I questioned why I was being told I owed $59 when my treatment plan showed $19.20. The explanation for the $59 changed when I challenged it. I was then told the amount would actually be $19.20. Shortly afterward, my appointment was canceled because the office allegedly could not verify my insurance. I contacted my insurance company. My insurance company confirmed that my coverage was active and contacted the office directly. After this occurred, I was told that the office would not reschedule my appointment because of my interaction with the receptionist. I believe this sequence raises serious concerns regarding the accuracy of the billing information provided to me and the manner in which my insurance was handled. If the office could not verify my insurance, it is difficult to understand how the office arrived at a specific $59 patient-responsibility amount in the first place, particularly when the treatment plan provided to me stated $19.20. I also intend to report my concerns to the appropriate California regulatory authorities so that the billing and insurance records can be independently reviewed. I believe these circumstances warrant an examination of whether other patients have experienced similar billing discrepancies, insurance-verification issues, or treatment by this employee. And this is not an isolated incident. I have previously had multiple unpleasant interactions with Shakila. She has been dismissive and argumentative over email and telephone, and I have experienced her hanging up on me. There is a consistent pattern of behavior that I find completely unacceptable for someone interacting with patients. The behavior I have experienced from this office has been disgusting, disrespectful, and deeply unprofessional. read more

I've been going to this dentist for about two years, but I recently decided to switch to a new office due to repeated unprofessional experiences. Over the course of three separate cleanings, I never once saw the dentist. The hygienists were the only ones I interacted with, which felt odd and inconsistent with what I expect from a dental office. More recently, I came in because I was experiencing tooth sensitivity. The dentist briefly examined me, did a quick bite test, and said he thought I might have a crack and would need a crown. I wasn't comfortable moving forward with a treatment that would cost over $1,000 when he didn't seem confident in the diagnosis. The staff immediately tried to push me to get the procedure done that same day, and when I said I needed time to think and schedule it, I was told I'd need to put down a $200 deposit just to book the appointment. On top of that, during my appointment I repeatedly caught the dentist looking at my chest multiple times, which made me extremely uncomfortable as a woman and felt completely inappropriate. Overall, the office felt unprofessional and I did not feel safe or respected as a patient. I would not recommend this dentist, especially for any major procedures or sedation. read more

Dr. Al and his team are honest, professional, efficient, caring, and thorough. I began visiting Dr. Al recently after being with a dentist for 1.5 years who was not transparent and treated my teeth very poorly. Dr. Al was able to see me last-minute, provide a comprehensive review of my dental health and necessary next steps, and referrals for any work that needed be outsourced to a periodontist (his referral was amazing as well). Scheduling was extremely easy and they were available same-day when I had a couple of emergency needs for dental care. There is no way these reviews are real. Quick backstory, I went from having PPO coverage to HMO coverage, and as you can imagine finding a good dentist has been challenging to say the least. After scouring Yelp I thought Mesa Dental sounded great and it worked with my insurance. I scheduled an appointment and got in right away for x-rays and had a cleaning scheduled within a couple of days of that appt. Unfortunately, I got sick, and had to cancel my appointment. I felt terrible as my appt was first thing on a Monday morning, but called and left a message before hand that I had to reschedule and asked for a callback. No response. Called again and left a message, no callback. A week later, today, I called again, was placed on hold for a long time, and then told the soonest available appointment was in six months. I thought I misheard the receptionist, but no, we're in September and the soonest available cleaning was in February. I expressed concern as I would not have gone with this dentist had I known their cleaning waits were 6 mos, that's crazy. She was so rude, and said "feel free to find a new dentist" What?? I then asked her, "are you related to the doctor? Does he know that you're speaking to his clients like this?" She said yes he does. Welp, I wrapped up that conversation. No way I'm letting anyone in that office touch my teeth lol. Anyways, looks like it's time to find a new dentist, or just come to terms with the fact that you really do get what you pay for and go back to my awesome PPO dentist. What a bummer. Denist is very good, so is the X-ray tech, and although I had a horrible experience with one of his hygienists, I only went back because I was assured she was not going to work on me again. Stephanie, new hygienist, did do a great job and renewed my confidence. I agreed WITH THE DENTISTS RECOMMENDATION after my last visit in January to come back in 4 months for a regular cleaning. Reason for one star, office manager Shakira. I was unimpressed by her officious attitude on my first visit (apparently her job is so secure it doesn't matter how she treats the patients) but she was not important to my decision to return. I called today, Feb. 28, to make my 4 month appointment and rude just not cover it. She argued repeatedly with me over the reason for my next visit. Quite frankly, I think she gets a kick out talking down to the patient, and I can't afford the high blood pressure episodes I associate with this office. Not going back. Follow up, I called back to cancel. When I told her she was the reason, the way she argued with me, no apology, instead she TALKED OVER me. When I asked her name, she told me she was the office manager. I had to ask twice for a name. Only the dentist can know for sure how valuable she is. I was scheduled for a routine cleaning on a Monday. That Saturday I had a crown fall out. When I got to my appointment they did the cleaning and then took me right in and replaced my crown. They are always friendly and professional. They are upfront about fees and work with my insurance. They are good about making sure I don't feel any pain during procedures.
