My experience with this institution was quite limited. I parked on its edge and walked downtown…read more Its parking options were quite nice. Lolzsies. In other words, I have no relationship with Saint Johns. It was, however, splendid to walk the grounds and visually absorb the architecture. It looks like it would be a wonderful place to study. It is after all world-renowned. If you're sightseeing, it is quite walkable to central Oxford.

I learned a lot during my summer study abroad experience, but the thing that's sticks out the most…read morein my mind, is the fact that I learned that Oxford, is not just one big university, as one might think of it in the states. It's actually a series of 39 smaller colleges, each with their own separate campuses and facilities and educational specialties -- one of those colleges being named St. Johns. But let's be honest here, you don't really want to tell new acquaintances and potential employers that you studied at St. John's College for the summer, you want the reaction you get from telling them you studied at Oxford. And therefore, the misconception continues... I had a great time studying here, although I won't comment too much on the curriculum or teachers, since I was a part of specialized summer program. However, the grounds were well kept and immaculate. The architecture was historic and gorgeous...and the dorm rooms were crazy big. At least mine was...I had so much damn space in that room, it was like I had a studio apartment all to myself. There's a pub on campus, that's pretty spacious and well stocked, and there's a few kebab vans on the street near campus that serve late night greasy stuff, including the very popular cheesy chips (i.e. fries). 1am food for drunkards....UK style.

Since 2013, Jesus College has been the venue for the Oxford Conference of Corsetry. As sad as I am…read morethat OCOC will never happen again in this venue (if ever), I am very happy I made it to the very last one. Jesus College is absolutely stunning, and I am so happy that I had the honor to stay here for a night. My dorm room in Building #17 (which had libraries in the buildings, and dorm rooms on the 3rd and 4th floor) was wonderful, with two rooms! One rather large room with a desk and a wardrobe, and a second room with a bed, drawers, and a bedside table. There was a bonus room: a private bathroom complete with a private shower! They also provided towels, and like a hotel, complimentary shampoo, conditioner, and soap, in a little Jesus College baggie that I was more than happy to take home. Both main rooms also had large windows that opened up, complete with a gorgeous view overlooking Oxford, complete with a gargoyle next to my window. Being neighbors with the Radcliffe Camera and Bodleian Library, I really felt as though I was looking out from a window in Hogwarts. The main rooms where the panels and workshops were hosted for our conference were the Habakkuk Room and the Periodicals Room. We also had the JCR for our welcome talk, tea breaks, corset show and tells, and closing talk. We also had complimentary meals (breakfast, lunch, AND dinner!) and ate in a gorgeous dining hall that felt like a miniature of the Hogwarts Great Hall. The food was delicious and beautifully presented as well. One of my favorite desserts were the slices of pistachio cakes with rose frosting that was offered during lunch. Oh, so lovely! My taste buds were in Heaven. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful too. At one point, I accidentally left my key card in my room, and locked myself out of my room. I went to the front desk, and they were so helpful in getting me a new key card that I could use as soon as lunch was over. Thank you so much, staff! Check in and check out was quick and easy too. Although I am sad OCOC will never happen here again, I am happy that I had the experience to BE here, to marvel over the beauty of Jesus College, to sleep here, explore the halls, eat here, and connect with a community of some of the the world's most skilled and dedicated corset enthusiasts. What happy memories. Thank you, Jesus College, for being the home for Oxford Conference of Corsetry.

One of Oxford's hidden gems, Jesus College is tucked away on Turl Street. It is a small College,…read morefounded by Elizabeth I in 1571 (the only Elizabethan college in Oxford). The first quad contains the chapel, which is small but has wonderful stained glass in the east window and also a bust of Lawrence of Arabia, one of the college's most famous old member. The Principal's Lodgings, which has a distinctive shell porch over the door, is also in this quad. The entrance to the Hall is off the passage through to second quad. The Hall contains portraits of some of the college's benefactors and famous old members, including ex-Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Second quad has a marvelous wisteria on one of the walls, so be sure to check this out if you are visiting in May. Many people, like me, think Jesus is one of the prettiest colleges in Oxford.

We were on a guided walking tour of Oxford. The city of Oxford is demonated by Oxford University…read morewhich is actually comprised of 41 separate colleges and it dates back to around 1096. Some of the buildings are open to the public - some are not. We were there on a Sunday and most were not. I was happy to be on a guided walking tour with a tour guide who was knowledgeable about the university. I would highly encourage a guided tour if you have the time. This is a beautiful campus/city and there is a wealth of history attached to both the city and the university. This was definitely worth the trip from London where we were staying.

We tried to find the main campus, but struggled. Was it because we came on a Saturday? Or because we came after all the students already started summer break a few weeks ago. My wife was happy to come during the break; I prefer visiting during the school year to see the liveliness. Overall, we had a good time visiting as many of their schools, libraries, campuses, churches, etc. as possible. Was not surprised that this place was so touristy; schools make so much additional $$ giving paid tours and/or charging admissions to enter. Also, we were fortunate enough to have visited when the museum sponsored a free event for the kids, see pictures. Lastly, I took a nice local beer break in one of their libraries. So cool to be able to have a beer in a library, might be a first for me. Back in my college days, we had to go to the student union pub. Atmosphere - Beautiful, cool, and historic. Schools spread out over a few mile radius, so be prepared to walk if you want to visit. We grabbed a hop on hop off map as a guide of places to visit, see picture. Service - Good. Price - Depends on which schools tour and admission costs. A few, very few, campuses were free. Owner Comment - Great town to visit, nice break from London. I suggest visiting during the school year.
