This use to be a store I shopped in regularly. I loved the clothes but sadly due to the terrible sales personnel the experience was often difficult. I had boycotted the store years ago. Then one day 5 years ago I went in to purchase a pair of pants. I knew what I wanted so I simply made my purchase and just left. OK clothes yes. But what an excruciating experience to shop there!!!! They hover around you like vultures while you try things on and have no understanding of one's personal style...constantly draping me with scarves and giant belts even though I'm an obvious jeans and cardigan type. I bought about $1,200 worth of clothing at this store and all the sales people were so nice .... I liked what I got, but I bought some things that when I got home, I realized didn't work for me ... they put a lot of pressure on you. When I went to return tsome items, they just gave me credit note. I thought I'd get a belt to go with the jeans I had bought there. The sales girl showed me some and each time I didn't like it, she'd make a face. One time, I caught another sales girl rolling her eyes. I was really mad. A couple of weeks ago I was there - I have a large store credit - and when I didn't get anything, they were so rude. To add insult to injury - as I was standing there, 2 of them gave a running critique of what I was wearing: my jeans were too tight, the jacket didn't go. etc. - they were talking about me in the 3rd person as if I wasn't there! If I didn't have this credit, I would NEVER EVER go back. Who do they think they are? On a day I dressed down to run a few errands in the neighborhood something got my attention in the window. When I walked in, instead of a friendly hello I go the up and down look from the lady inside. A retail girl who does minimum wage and commission shoud not look down on me because I decided to wear yoga pants and running shoes. To make things worse she quickly realized the porsche in front was mine as I ran out after seeing the ticket man. After I came back inside she changed her tune very fast.... Guess it was a slow day for them because she tried to convince me to buy the dress and get alterations...I'm a I've 2 it was a size 10. I latter found out the owner is a real piece of work and her reputation around here is less than stellar. By the way the size 10 dress fom the window was from the year before and her tag had it full price for 290 something. Found the dress from the same designer on the designer website on sale for 60 something. The crazy thing is the dress had such a nice scarf print on it had she not acted like such a you know what towards me I would of purchased it for a friend as a gift and returned as a all neighbourhood client. read more

I have shopped at Merrygoround for a couple of years now. The staff are fantastic. They know my size without having to ask and they know exactly what will work with my body shape so they don't waste my time on stuff that I won't like or won't look good on me. They have an amazing selection of fun and hip clothes, as well, as great pieces for work. They can also take a very expensive piece and pair it with something less expensive to make the whole outfit much more affordable. This is one of my favourite boutiques in Toronto! I decided to check out online reviews of MerryGoRound after I went there earlier this afternoon. I've only been in the store twice, but each time I've had a negative experience. My first visit was over a year ago and I tried on a dress. The staff seemed to be friendly and helpful until, as I was thinking the purchase over, the salesperson helpfully said "Well, if you can't afford it . . . " When I stopped by today, three of the staff were screaming at each other and the fourth member became concerned only when I walked in. The screamers turned down the volume when they realized that a customer was in the store, but continued the discussion. The fourth salesperson was fine, if a little condescending . MerryGoRound has sophisticated clothes but the store's "culture" is a big turn-off. read more

Very pushy staff. Went in for shopping for some clothes and similar to other reviewers, I found the staff to be pushy and rude. They will tell you anything to make a sale, and didn't even give me a second to make up my mind. It's a pity because the clothes are pretty. Shopped there yesterday. Clothes are exquisite. My saleslady was terrific. Went into the store looking like a bag of hammers and she didnt flinch once....didnt find them condescending at all as some reviewers did. I think the staff have a lot of fun together and obviously love the clothes they sell. When I got home and had a closer look at the two pieces I bought I loved them even more. Didnt get the upsell at all. Clothes are high end but sales make them affordable. Some might find the staff intimidating as they are strong personalities but just put your Big Girl Pants on and go in. Pretend you're in Milan. This store has the most rude, obnoxious sales staff that I have ever witnessed anywhere in Canada and the world. The manager is nonexistant and will not return customer phone calls. If you buy something understand that you will never be allowed to exchange it or return it for any reason, even if it is defective. Merrygoround deserves a sub-zero rating. I made the mistake of entering this store a second time during my 5 years of living in the neighbourhood. The first experience, years ago, left a bad taste in my mouth but for some reason I thought I would try again. Mistake. The saleswomen in this store are beyond rude - it's like they are all sharing an inside joke, talking amongst themselves and essentially ignoring most customers. A saleswoman eventually, reluctantly, began to help me. I tried on a few pieces - some of where were nice, but nothing I was sure of. The attitude I received after indicating I was not going to take any of the items right away and instead needed to come back with the pieces I was trying to match these new items with (their return policy is exchange only - no cash refund) was appalling. Rude, childish, petulance. I could not believe it. This simply convinced me never to return. Other friends of mine have confirmed this ridiculously poor service. While the store carries some nice pieces, none of it is so progressive, interesting or elegant that it can't be found elsewhere. I am willing to invest good money for quality clothing but will never drop a dime in this establishment. It is an embarrassment to the Bloor West neighbourhood that this store is still in business. read more

They do have beautiful clothing but if you are in the shop after a customer complains about anything to the staff, you will hear some very inappropriate comments about customers in general and then wonder what they say about you when you leave. read more

Condescending pushy sales people

NOT impressed with this store and it's attitude towards it's clients! I bought a pair of jeans there ( David Kahn $ 240). They were more than I would normally spend on a pair of jeans but they had a great fit and I thought I would get a lot of wear out of them - NOT the case. After wearing them only four times I noticed that the jean fabric had flaws in it and they were already starting to split. The extremely pushy staff who had been so keen to sell me the jeans were now not at all interested in helping me. The manager of the store was rude, and told me that once an item was worn it could not be returned. The "extra mile" she told me she would "do" for me was to "tell me" I could go try and find the web-site of the jean manufacture and see if they would help me. The staff at the store Bloor West location has a reputation of being rude pushy. How a client looks in an outfit does not interest them. Only the sale does. Beware- once you buy anything from that store you are on your own. Like vultures after their prey, they are onto another unexpected client/victim. I live in the Bloor West Village and like to support small independent businesses, however, I will never shop in that store again. read more

The sales staff are EXTREMELY pushy and won't let you leave without buying something. You can't just browse and look because they'll start a change room for you anyway. I had a great experience at this store. They have a great selection of designers and styles, and the staff are terrific. They were honest and helpful, encouraging me to try on things I might not otherwise have tried. I found some stunning pieces that I feel great in. I bought expensive jeans from Merrygoround and I wore them a couple of times and the seam ripped. I went back to the store to see what they can do for me. The salespeople were helpful and explained to me that any garment being worn could not be taken back because of the supplier's strict policy. They did send my jean out to be repaired and I am happy with the result. So I can't say that I had a bad experience. I will continue shopping there!!!! read more

I really like the collection of clothing at this store. Although not cheap the buyer knows how to pick interesting articles and designers that are not mainstream and don't look like all the usual styles out there. For that I would love to give them 4 stars. However, I HATE THE STAFF!!!!! They clearly are on commission and have no idea when to back off. I walk by the store often, but will not enter without backup from either a trusted friend (who has attitude) or my husband who can play interference. For reason of their sales staff I want to give them a big fat ZERO rating but I'll compromise and give them 1 star. If you can stomach the staff the merchandise is worth looking at. read more

I have to agree with Cheryl H. The sales people are definitely very strong with their opinions, but I cannot fault them, because they have always been right! They have pushed me to try things on that I would not have looked at twice, that are now may favourite pieces! I have no problem saying no to them if it is something I simply won't ever wear etc. I like the way that they take charge of the situation and style you. If I am ever need an outfit for a night out, and office event, or formal event, and I only have time to make it to one place to search, this is the place, I have never had to walk out without finding the perfect outfit. This was the worst shopping experience I have ever had! Please think twice about going into the Yonge Street store. I was the only person in the store and was buying 2 tops however it was not good enough for the salesgirl who waited on me. She was rude and abusive even as I was paying for my purchase. I don't understand how they are able to stay in business based on all the negative reviews I have read about them. OK - so call me weird. But I'm a 60-something fairly stylish person who heads for this store first and foremost. I don't like pushy sales people when I'm buying clothes - but I've had great luck with one salesperson here who always pushes and always in the right direction. She's sort of tart-tongued - but I'm tart-tongued back and we laugh a lot. They always try to upsell me - but why not! Sometimes they're right and I go for it. Sometimes I won't even try the thing on - and tell them. I don't need this! But nice try! I trust her! I once went there in a panic looking for something to wear for a formal family portrait - outdoors - and the blouse they recommended was just the ticket. I get so many compliments on it - even 3 years later. I bought a sweater here once that two sales people were obviously not crazy about on me - but I bought it anyway. They were right - it really isn't a great sweater. Just sort of hangs on me. I've walked out empty-handed more than a few times because they've looked for something to sell me and we've jointly concluded there's nothing that's good for me at that moment. I bought my first (and 2nd and 3rd and 6th) pair of skinny jeans there and I won't go anywhere else. Something about me and that store clicked and I HATE shopping for clothes. So go figure. I think it helps to keep your sense of humour when shopping, be clear and assume the people selling the clothes are intelligent. These ladies definitely are! read more
