This is a fun attraction in central Canberra with a little something for everyone. It's a great value at $3 per person, my five-year-old loved it, and is a bit of a historical artifact in itself.
This carousel is over 100 years old and, judging from the looks of it, hasn't been visually modified from its original design, though it no longer uses its steam engine for power. In its lack of visual restoration or update, though, it preserves some mildly interesting history. First, an older version of the UK coat of arms dating to George V, and an older version of the Australian coat of arms, with emu and kangaroo positions different from the current version. The painted scenes are also quite interesting to observe, to include a number of British culture and colonial-era scenes, such as a fox hunt, colonial India, -- even a few portraits of nude women.
The ride itself is gentle and lasts a few minutes. Moderately thrilling to my five-year-old, but older kids did look a bit bored. Still, the ride and its visual history are well worth 10 minutes of your time. read more
