I was a student here in 2020. Needless to say I absolutely hate this fucking school with a burning passion. During my 5th grade year, I got paired with an annoying teacher. She was bitter and I didn't relate to her at all. My second year was the most horrible year of my life but somewhat nice. I was on the yellow team but before I tell you more I want to address that this is not directed at Mrs. Hightower at all. I love her and I hope she is doing well. Now with that being said, I hate the other two teachers. They were sexist, rude, and personally tried to teach correctly. But most of the time I just wanted to go home and get out of this fucked up cool. DON'T SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE and if you're forced to, good luck. The only problem I have with this school system is the teachers not being relatable to students. Some may take this as racism but it's not my intent. Blacks have adjusted for years in a predominantly run white society. Even in our school system a white teacher thinks their cool because they know a few slag words or hand shakes. In Merrillville the smallest infraction is dealt with harsh penalties. Growing up in Gary, saying a curse word a teacher would have simply yelled GET TO CLASS, or GET OUT MY HALLWAY. Whereas Merrillville would punish a child with detention and after so many possibly a suspension. These small infraction are damaging to a child's record which follows him/her their entire education. Bullying I understand, even physical fighting but WORDS ??? And let's be honest, if I know that a teacher is a total bitch my child gets the same vibe WITHOUT me mentioning this at home. I'm sure even some co-workers feel the same way. How many co-workers that you have that you don't care for? I'll wait........ If Merrillville teachers had to spend a year in Gary or even CPS they would view their MAJOR issues as small dust ups. Teachers aren't even compassionate about parents working to support their family hence the policy that reads WORK IS NOT AN EMERGENCY. So as the teacher stays on the clock continuing to get paid, the parent with no PTO, gets fired, now jobless with no money for rent/ mortgage, food or bills let alone fucking school lunch or book rentals.
