Curtis Falls is located on Tamborine Mountain near the Gold Coast. The hike is well marked and…read morepretty easy. There are no steep inclines, the path is wide and well manicured, and it wasn't crowded on the day we went. It was a bit chilly since it was at a higher elevation and in June. It's about 0.5km from the trail head and there is a sign that points you in the right direction. From the same starting point, you can also walk to the various shops and cafes that are nearby. There's a moderately sized parking lot that also has a small turn around area if you're being dropped off. The waterfall is far from the most impressive I've seen, but it's a nice walk if you want to go somewhere relaxing. 4 stars.

Did you know there was a subtropical rainforest less than 2 hours away from Brisbane? Yeah, you…read moreprobably did. Well you should go there anyway. It's easily accessible by car and lots of fun. I went to the Green Mountains section, because the walking trails are shorter and there's a waterfall. The Binna Burra section has some more challenging tracks. First off, if you're driving to Green Mountains from Brisbane, make sure not to miss the turn off for Lamington National Park Road, in Canungra. It's poorly marked, and if you miss it, you'll end up halfway to Gold Coast before you realize your mistake. If you pass through the town of Canungra without turning right, then you've missed the turn. Then, once you approach the park, the road is narrow and windy and mostly uphill for about 30 minutes, but it doesn't look like it on the map. Just hang in there, keep driving, you're almost there. And watch out for oncoming traffic. The road ends at the second car park, which is pretty big and should accommodate all cars even on a nice summer day. You'll see O'Reilly's gift shop up the hill on the right and the park's info centre on the left. At the gift shop you can buy bird seed, and then if you go up the path about 10 meters you can feed wild rosellas and king parrots. If you're holding the food, they will land on you to eat it, so be prepared. If you walk up another 20 meters past the bird feeding, the entrance to the tree top walk is on the left. I highly recommend it. It's a wooden foot bridge that literally takes you around the tree tops, about 20 meters off the ground. The view is stunning. There's a ladder that will take you up even higher, but there might be a long queue to get up there. Next to the tree top walk is the botanic garden, but if you're there at the wrong time of year, there are no flowers and it's kind of boring. That's when I was there. I'm sure it's nicer in the spring. There are hiking trails all over the park, as well as camping, so download a map from the website and prepare in advance. We did the Moran Falls track (4.4 km, about 1.5 hours) and the Python Rock track (3.1 km, about 1 hour). Both of these were very easy (kids would have no problem, for example, although probably not good for elderly or disabled people). Moran Falls has, yes, that's right, a waterfall, which is spectacular, and a lookout with amazing views. Python Rock has even better lookout, and you can see the same waterfall. To get to these trails, you have to walk about 10 minutes back up the road, past the first car park. There's a sign on the left for the walking trails. Some of the harder trails and the camping areas start up near the tree top walk. In general, the park is clean and well maintained. There are lots of birds and lizards everywhere, as well as butterflies. It's a rainforest, so even when it's a hot day in Brisbane it will be no more than 25 on the hiking trails - bring a jumper or a rain jacket. There are no rubbish bins anywhere so be prepared to carry your garbage home with you.

There's lots of different hikes you can take around here, from a minimum of 3 KM to a Mac of 21 KM…read more I'm sure you could even find a 1 Km hike, but if you came all the way out here, you'd want to see more than that. You walk through lots of different types of vegetation and can see wild wallabies and pademelons jumping through if you look carefully enough. It's also a birdwatchers paradise, keep your eyes out for cool cockatoos. We saw a lovely waterfall and a view from the top of surprise rock. There's some cliffs on the walk we did, but one hike has aboriginal cave art walk for about 5 Km for history buffs. It can get chilly and can heat up quickly so bring lots of water and a raincoat. Also, only bathroom is at binna burra, so use it before you go on the hike. After you get back, don't forget to get a scone from the cafe at binna burra. Best scone my friends and I have ever had, super fluffy and tasty.

If you're looking to see Australian wildlife, this park is probably one of the less known local…read moreoptions, but it does have its virtues. It has inherited a conservation function, and some of their animals are rescues that can't survive in the wild or breeding populations. The park isn't all that large, and just wandering around it you'd be done pretty quickly, but they do a daily series of shows, covering a variety of different animals. Their birds of prey (and owls) are quite impressive and will whiz right by you, while their wallabies will cutely prance about. There is an enclosure where you can walk up close to the wallabies and an emu. Seekers of the best known animals will find there is a feeding for the "small" salt water crocodiles and some koalas hanging out in trees (though you can't get close to them). Personally, I was most fascinated by the cassowaries, large, flightless birds with a sort of fur instead of feathers. The shows are enough to keep a group of tourists or kids entertained for most of the day, and the handlers seemed to know what they were doing. The park itself, though, will be the first to admit that it's only an introduction, and the best way to see the wildlife is ultimately to track it down in the wild. They do point that out, while giving the occasional tip to protect travelers from the ever-dangerous creatures (and them from us). At the park here, there is a considerable boardwalk through the wetlands, and you can walk by the creek down to the ocean (all of this is outside of the paid area and it was news to me). The park itself might be worth visiting once, but what's beyond it is what you should come back for again and again.

A good activity for kids under the age of 5 with a few caveats. Nice water features with spray…read moreelements, little wading pools, a waterfall, and more. Lots of shade and benches. Cafe nearby within the park as well. It's also near the Australia Fair Shopping Centre (which is very poorly laid out but at least it is close) if you need to combine a trip with shopping. My quibbles: 1. Parking isn't free - it's $AUS 1.90 an hour. Not a huge deal - worth it to help cover the expenses of the space. 2. There isn't a changing area directly by the play area. Most of these sorts of playspaces that are water-specific seem to have changing areas surrounding the pools, but this one you had to walk a bit too. When you are schlepping kids and gear, you really want it closer. 3. This pool is definitely geared towards little ones, but there's a lot of undulation in the ground surface and thus makes it prone to falls. We witnessed several kids injure themselves in the 45 minutes we were there. 4. It's a bit difficult to see exactly where this is from the road because it is hidden by trees. Go into the main broadwater parklands entrance and park. 5. There are also two playgrounds in this location: one close to the water area that's fine but in a bit of a wooded area and thus prone to bugs, and other that's a really big walk away. It's a pretty walk along the shore and there's a little beach en route past the large intervening field area, but with little kids, it's a bit too far. There's also no parking at that end of the park, so you can't start at the playground without some difficulty. The larger playground has some really cool elements for bigger kids and some nice elements for little ones, but not a whole lot in between for kids between the ages of 4-7 or so. It also has very limited shade in the zone above the slides and climbing structures, though good shade in other areas. All in all, we won't be going back while we are on the Gold Coast, but if you've got small kids and they need a break from the beach, you could do worse than a visit to the Rockpools.
