Lovely walking trails in the National Park. We took a trip into the hinterland from the coast for a few hours and did the MacDonald Rainforest Circuit and the Cedar Creek Falls walks - both were quite easy going, taking us through rainforest brimming with nature and to scenic waterfalls and rock pools you can swim in (and which a few plucky souls were leaping into). Was less impressed with Gallery Walk, a street of cafes and shops atop the mountain said to be a must-see attraction. I just found it odd and a bit of a tourist trap, I'd give this a miss if you're not really into shopping for nick nacks or cuckoo clocks and use your time to do some more exploring. Tamborine Mountain is an easy 45-minute drive from Brisbane, perfect for a day trip and for some short walks. It's a rainforesty area where you'll find swimming holes, water falls and spectacular views of the Logan Valley. I took a drive up there recently and really just went exploring without too much direction. There are plenty of places to eat, but my friend and I decided to stop for lunch at a restaurant/hotel called St Bernard's, drawn in by a huge model of a St Bernard. Although filled to the brim with tourists, Tamborine mountain is perfect for a quick getaway or a weekend stay. I was lucky enough to camp at cedar creek for a FULL WEEK and could not have been more chuffed with the place. With time (and a reasonable amount of dosh) you can have a ball in this mountain retreat. I've sampled delicious wines, ridden horses, eaten my weight in fudge visited glow worm caves, swam in waterfalls, fought off snakes and was persuaded to buy giant thundereggs. The aptly named tourist drive is also filled with attractions, with enough tacky souvenir shops, ice creameries, fudge stores and german cuckoo clock stores to make the heart sing. Kinda reminds me of Tantalus Mountain in Oahu. Tamborine Mountain is a big plateau 8 km long by 4 km wide in the Gold Coast Hinterland, 45 minutes west of Brisbane, south-east Queensland. The plateau was formed by a lava flow from the Mount Warning volcanic eruption 22 million years ago (see separate Yelp review of the eruption, LOL). Part of the Scenic Rim mountains. The name Tamborine comes from the white-washed version of the Aboriginal word 'Jambreen' which means 'wild lime' and refers to the finger lime trees growing on the mountain. Witches Falls National Park was declared in 1908, the first national park in Queensland. It's now part of the Tamborine National Park. The birds love it here. Those brightly-coloured parrots own this place. This is one of those places that sticks in your mind in a good way. Atop Mount Tamborine there is quite a lot of different offerings be it the quirky German cuckoo clock shop, the pubs and eateries, the fudge store and other places to buy things to take home with you. The air up there is a little bit fresher and I would say a fair bit cleaner than the city. Unfortunately the weather was woeful when I made my way up there yesterday so it was hard to see much through the dense fog and light drizzle. Still a magical place to go and look out for the fresh avocados for sale on the way up the mountain! read more
