The location is great, walking distance to tons of restaurants and city squares. On the downside, the rooms are small, the bed is only 12 inches off the floor, the heating system was a bit outdated, and the shower only had half a curtain so there was always tons of water on the floor after a shower. Also, the internet blocks Skype and other VOIP calls. I stayed for 5 nights, and Rennes is a city with AMAZING quality food, made old-world style from scratch. Every restaurant I went to blew me away, the French really care about their food. The people in Rennes were some of the nicest I've ever met, including taxi drivers and store owners, basically everybody. There were beautiful women everwhere in this city, since there is a major university in Rennes. I would stay at this hotel again, but only after checking out a few other with bigger rooms and better beds.

It is a shame because their sister Hôtel Mercure in Brest was AMAZING. I'm giving them a five star review. It is really a case study in how big a difference service makes. I can find a nice room lots of places, so I see no reason to return to this hotel in Rennes. From the impersonal check-in, hurried and bad directions to a lunch destination, bungling our airport taxi request so that we were 30 minutes late leaving with the barest apology. Yeah, we're not going back. They should gets some tips from the staff in Brest about how to properly handle hotel customers.

We had called ahead to make a reservation, but could not get through: the operator said the "service did not exist." Perhaps it had closed, we thought. Since we couldn't get a reservation, we decided to just head there and take our chances. I did not tell the maitre d' that we had cruised for a half hour looking for a parking spot, but we did. Using the Apple map program for directions is a challenge in a European town you don't know, in which the announcer's French is so bad you don't have a clue what street she's talking about. We ended up in a parking garage and walked about five blocks to get there. At any rate, the maitre d' was snooty and not at all helpful. So I can't talk about the food, but the attitude is more what I would have expected decades ago. Most French are aware that tourism is a major industry for their country and act accordingly. I speak French, so he did not have that excuse. I would give it a zero for that reason, but that would make it appear I hadn't given a rating.
