We were in Presque Isle for a ski meet in the middle of February. During our last visit to Presque Isle, I had been struck by how the town was long on hospitality, but short on diversity; there are numerous Chinese restaurants, numerous pizza joints, several "family" type restaurants, but few choices that are adventurous. I also knew that a "good tap selection" at a local establishment meant Guiness, Harp, Sam Adams, Smithwick's, and the usual domestics. Again, little adventure.
So I did some legwork, and found out that Merchants on the Corner, a little yarn and wine shop, has branched out into beer.
So I tried to get in on Sunday afternoon, as the blizzard raged. No dice. Open 9:30-5, Monday through Saturday. I went back on Monday morning at 11:00, on our way to become human popsicles at the ski venue. The selection of beers was fantastic. I struck up a conversation with the woman working there, who told me most of the beers they carry aren't distributed to PI, so they had to take trips to Portland to satisfy the cravings of their Aroostook customer base. And folks in this part of the county should really take advantage of that. From what I saw, there wasn't a severe markup in prices, and their selection is as good as you could possibly expect for such a remote location. I picked up a couple of beers from Penobscot Bay Brewery, "Humble B", a honey and ginger lager, and "Wildfire", a smoked rauchsbier. I also picked up Cerberus, a Belgian trippel. I haven't seen either of these at anywhere downstate.
I highly recommend anyone who lives in the County, or just visiting, to drop in on these friendly folks and encourage them for doing a good thing. read more
