Chris M. wrote a great review of The Playhouse Theater and I have no argument with him. However,…read moremy experiences with this place date back a very long space of time. I was two, I was later told, when I saw my first movie there. Somewhat unsure of how I might react at that age, my parents watched me closely for the first twenty minutes or so. They need not have worried. I was enthralled! Who would not be ... at any age ... as the film was DUMBO and the year was 1942 (film was released the year before). In those days, Jack and Gertie Champlain owned and ran the place; the films changed three times a week (usually Thursday was the "dark day") and our family seldom missed seeing a film there. Flash forward an eon or two. I have now lived non-stop in Manhattan (that's not the one in Kansas, Dorothy!) since 1963. Thanks to Chandler Music Hall (my temple and refuge for nearly all of my growing up years) and to Jack and Gertie with their movies, I've now toiled in the fields of theatre, film and television since February 20, 1968! I have a small agency since that date where I've represented actors, writers of almost every stripe, photojournalists (in the first fifteen years or so), directors, a scenic designer, stage managers ... the whole shebang. Truthfully, there have been days when you could have bought the agency from me for $1.29 ... but, over-all the memories are terrific -- and for a kid from Randolph, the experiences I've had are enviable. People learning of my true age express some dismay. "You could have retired years ago! When will you finally do that?" My response is genuine, I assure you. "The day they throw dirt in my face!" Best to all! L.R.C. PS: Like truly GOOD movies? Here are three to consider (in my book): JASON BOURNE (damned if Matt Damon hasn't done it again, against heavy odds, be assured.) ANTHROPOID -- absolutely brilliant film about the early Nazi era right after they rolled over the Czechs. Disturbing and riveting. If light-hearted fare is your only preferred dish, don't eat here! FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS -- a true story about a real lady. Another Oscar for Meryl Streep may very well be in the offing. Good to great cast in support of her awesome performance. Take those damned recyclable bottles back and scrape together the coin to buy a ticket ... and GO! PPS: I did NOT put that absurd comment after my five star rating, readers. I've tried to delete it, but ... "they" have to muck it up somehow! Whatever "hip editor" who did this may die of "terminal cuteness" ... please!

STUNNING!! This is my FAVORITE man-made find in Vermont eva!…read more +++ LFSP is a private farmland dedicated to outdoor sculptures. Only a self-guided tour of 50+ abstract installations of local, national and one international artists. This is totally an open hay field with spectacular views of working farms, barns, rolling green hills, snake mountain (?) and the Adirondacks. The meadow path is mowed but no permanent walkways nor signs. This place is BIG. The path is about a mile and you pace at your preference. Each piece had a small plaque with the name and the artist so I searched some and learned more about them... internet worked great here:-). When I visited in mid-July, 2021 there were about 1/2 dozen cars and 10 people. There was an abundant space to social distance and to experience each piece personally. But God knows why some people want to be within a foot of your space! Ya, please don't be that person if you visit! It was sunny mid-70s but zero shade so bring a hat, water and a comfortable pair of shoes. Recently it rained a lot and some of the paths were muddy or had standing water. Frank Ittleman, the owner was riding-mowing around the entrance and greeted each visitor. Apparently, they bought the land a decade ago and began the installation 4 years ago. Frank said they will be adding another 1/2 a dozen installations this year. Some of their installations are for sale and some aren't. So this may be more like an outdoor gallery with some temporary exhibits rather than a museum like Glenstone. As far as the name goes, there's NO lemon trees or fairs here. It's likely attributing to the river named Lemon Fair in Addison county. Some of my favorites pieces were David Stromeyer's Red Note, Peter Lundberg's Leap of Faith, Jeffrey Laudenslager's Riples-5 and the whimsical dancers by Jerry Daniel. On my way out, Frank came by in his pick up truck and asked if I enjoyed it. Very personable! I was absolutely stunned at the scale and the breathtaking setting. This is a HUGE plus for the Addison county and Vermont! +++ Free and donations are accepted +++ open daily from May 1 - Nov 1 + Limited free parking ~8 spots LFSP is located about half way on SR74 and easy to miss among barns and fields. This is a working farm for hay and at 50-60MPH it blends in so slow down as you get near it. There was NO sign only a small shoulder that allows about 6-8 cars...depending on how people park. Frank said they are adding a sign this summer so it should be easier to find LFSP then. Enjoy!

As a combination of art, history & geology it was fascinating to me plus I had a very welcoming visit with the studio manager who answered my many, many questions. It is run by a collaboration of sculptors and other artists, who give classes and whose works are on display around the grounds. The main studio is the old Vermont Marble company store, which they have creatively restored and converted to this new purpose. The old quarries and marble works are also incorporated into the new use - a worthy commemoration of the earlier marble workers and their craft. I will stop by again and urge others to seek it out.

The cabin was well appointed, had some fancy soap and for the first time, we could use the provided shampoo (which was sulfate and paraben free) because our kiddos have curly hair. The kitchen was well equipped- coffee pretty good, appliances and pots and pans are in great condition. We also have a 2 plus year old and they were super nice in lending us a pack and play along with a mattress in it. I'm not sure about the odd experiences the other reviewer had because nothing of the same sort ever happened to us in the least. Todd and Suzy were super nice and helpful. Our kid loved doing farm chores every morning with Suzy. Both kids think she is the "best farmer" ever. She has an incredible amount of patience as she listened to their many farm related stories while we "helped" with farm chores. I say "helped" because the work was extremely light so don't worry about it. In terms of flexibility, they have been great. We had to move our booking because of the covid situation last year and they were incredibly helpful.

Upper Valley wine…read moredrinkers quickly learned that they could experience wines made from unfamiliar grape varieties and from regions largely absent from wine lists in other local restaurants. Now, Matt Lombard, Mangalitsa's owner, has opened Decant, located right next door to the restaurant, to showcase food-friendly wines from notable producers and small vineyards from around the world. Unlike other places in Woodstock, Decant is strictly a wine shop: no beer, cider, or hard liquor in sight. Also, it isn't the place to go to find a huge selection of blow-your-socks-off California cab or Australian Shiraz. Instead, on its shelves, you'll find wines chosen because they exhibit a sense of place (terroir!), are produced by growers who care for their land, and vintners who produce wines based on traditional techniques. The wines at Decant are carefully chosen by Lombard and Keven Ring. You quickly realize that this is a passion project for both, driven by their love of food and wine. Ring is an experienced sommelier, who worked at Simon Pearce and Twin Farms for years and is an engaged (!) oenophile. His experience in pairing wine and food is helpful if you need a couple of bottles for a special dinner or, if you're a wine geek, you'll find his encyclopedic knowledge of wine absorbing. Once the store is fully up and running, they'll offer tastings and events, a wine club, and other wine-related experiences.
