I really enjoyed visiting this market. The prices are a bit hiked because of the tourist traffic, but generally all vendors are similarly priced and serve similar items. I tried a fried whitebait fish plate and some orange juice. The sanitation is a bit suspect (food is out for hours with these propellers to ward off pigeons), and gets reheated in a microwave before it is served. Workers tend to use gloves that touch coins and bills and also directly handle food (sprinkled salt with the same hand). I think it's part of the experience, and I thankfully haven't had any issues (I have a sensitive stomach)! Good number of stands with pantry items (jarred items and bagged spices), some souvenir vendors, and other stalls for food and drinks. I traveled solo and felt safe the whole time but I also tend to have my belongings directly on my person in front of me and keep zipped pouches for other items. When in Rome... I mean in Palermo! We tried the Stigghiola, which is a Sicilian delicacy, which was tasty but somewhat difficult to chew due to stringy texture. I know this is not a beautiful description, but it's worth the try! I enjoyed it. Be prepared for stimulus overload. Most obviously the "abbanniate" or the vendors' shouts to promote their products, as well as the lines and crowds. My aunt, being the kind soul she is, called out a pickpocketer in the act and he harassed her. Be sure to keep your belongings in a safe place. (Man pickpocketed had his wallet in his back pocket.) Try to order food in Italian, you'll get a better, friendlier response, even if it's not good Italian. The food is very affordable so step out of your comfort zone and try something new! read more

This is a street market and while there are a few things here for tourists, it's definitely the spot for locals to be doing their food shopping. Early on a Saturday afternoon, fresh fish, vegetables, meats, fruits, some baked goods. If you're looking for what you're making for dinner tonight, this is the spot. And lots of shoes, coats, scarves, shirts and other clothing. Some magnets and other trinkets. I'm not sure if all or any of the vendors accept credit cards. Many of them had prices marked. The expectation was so high, and in reality it failed big time. Everyone was saying good things about thins market, saying that it's a Must to visit this market in Palermo, describing it as a food paradise, I don't know I didn't see that paradise. It was a disaster for me. The market is not as big as I imagine it would be. It is super narrow , it's in between narrow city streets, tons of people , and even scooters manage to go through. Quite dirty . There definitely places where you can try street food, but I was very skeptical because as I said it looked very dirty , unsanitary;((( So the only things I tried was Gambironi and boiled octopus, the octopus was horrible, couldn't chew it, the shrimps were absolutely amazing though. You can find quite a wide variety of sea food and fruit and vegetables here. But be aware that vegetable vendors Don't let you chose your own veggies, they will chose for you, but we had bad experience as well. Noisy, bustling, colourful - sounds pretty good to me. Sprawling local market a short walk south of Quattro Canti. On a Sunday morning it was almost overwhelming: not a place for the nervy or to bring small children. Some great sights, loud and entertaining sellers. There's a flea market section which seemed to be fake bags and fake sneakers: nothing to see here, move along please. read more

The marketplace of my dreams. My only regret is that we are staying in a hotel, so I can't buy anything to cook. There are plenty of street food vendors along the way as well, so don't worry, you won't leave hungry. Bring cash, walking shoes, and an open mind--it's an operating market as well as a tourist hot spot, so you might get hassled a bit and shoved around. read more

Bustling, crowded, varied, diverse. Everything you want from a local walking farmers market. Some fantastic finds here in terms of items and produce. There are so many different booths here that everyone will find something interesting. I ended up trying stuffed squid and small fish with roe from small booths and both were absolutely delicious. If you're staying at an Airbnb locally, this is absolutely the place to go to pick up local, fresh produce. When you're done walking through it, you don't realize how far you've actually walked. read more

Ballarmo market The oldest market in Palermo and actually smaller than I expected but fantastic prices for veggies and fruits. We bought a kilo of oranges for 1 euro!! Fresh squeezed OJs yum. We also stocked up on salami, olives, tomatoes etc all super fresh. There is also fish market/meat market, condiments you require etc. It's worth having a kitchen in your hotel/accomodation to make some creations yourselves.
