Meats Cheeses Charcuterie Breads Produce Seafood This place is incredible. Not really a farmers market as these stalls are individually rented but wow, great selection of great foods, and finds! A must see while travelling in and around the greater Bilbao area.

Probably the most organized and broad market that I've visited in Spain. Mercado de la Ribera is practically a supermarket with clearly organized vendors that each specialize in their own food items. Butcher with fresh sliced iberico ham, fishmonger, cheese, green-grocer, and even a "hueveria". Yes, just eggs. There was even a stall that was completely dedicated to mushrooms. I mean, seriously. Nearly a dozen different varieties of mushrooms from portabello to shitake and all in between. Very neat! On the other side of the market, a number of restaurants and food stalls with ready-to-eat options and the usual configurations of pinxtos to be had. Well worth the stop but it does look like it gets very busy. If you're looking for nibbles or perhaps you have a small kitchen in your tourist apartment, here's the place to go to cook a meal.

Lovely market right in the heart of the city. Tons of fresh fare, tasty vermut, and people-watching. It's located on the right bank of the Nervion, so you can't miss it. Be sure to take some time, walk outside, and admire the scenery.

Wonderful stop for pintxos and a beer/sangria. Probably a dozen+ food stalls on first floor, some w/ stools at the bar, as well as a common eating area for all. Very lively atmosphere, to include televisions showing the most recent football games. On the 2d floor are market stalls for fish, beef, and some selling cheeses, olives/peppers, etc. Prices are very reasonable (about 1/3 less than what we paid for same meal in San Sebastián). Consider walking to the market along the river -- beautiful. Cheers! RS

Great pinxtos that you can have a fun time tasting your way thru. Lots to choose from so ask Q's as they're helpful. The food is beautifully displayed and each bar has something different. Enjoy eating your way thru the market

You may find here mainly fresh fish, meats, charcuterie, and cheese. There are a few vegetable and fruit stands. There are also places to eat pintxos and have coffee or drinks if you so desire. We had a pretty nice breakfast here on a Saturday morning before getting on with our day!

Forget buying lunch in an expensive restaurant or even a cheap and cheerful tapas joint, while you are in Bilbao the smart way to eat during the day is to shop in this fantastic local market and find somewhere to picnic at lunch time! Claimed by the city council to be Europe's largest covered market, the three-story Ribero is like a Portobello Road and Borough rolled into one brilliant super-market (note, not supermarket!!). Top quality produce of all kinds from bread to chorizo and fruit to fish and seafood are all here at wholesale prices we were spending EUR6 per day for a handsome lunch for two. The market looks great too hanging over the river and with a sandstone and window-fronted façade which makes it look more like a stately home than a municipal building. Brilliant!

I was drawn to this place in particular as the only review I could find online mentioned two fairly unique dishes: embuchados (coiled goat intestines) and a stew made with skinned pig face and snout. I have a thing about trying anything new and unusual at least once so the opportunity to try these dishes was too good to pass up. Sadly, my hopes were dashed when I realised this was a "stock the kitchen" type of market not a "stuff your belly" one. Still, any market is worth a look-see so we wandered around breathing in the fresh herb-scented air and ogling the succulent legs of ham hanging around us. Prices are pretty good here with 300g of Jamón Bellota costing a mere €9. We picked up a kilo of paraguayos (par-a-hi-yo-s) which are flat peaches that look like mini-pumpkins wearing a peach skin. GET SOME OF THESE! When ripe, these are the juiciest sweetest peaches you will ever taste. And at €2-3 per kilo, an absolute steal. They will seduce even the most die-hard of meat eaters (aka me) away from the display of hams - yes they are just that good. Quick tip - to determine if they are in the right stage of ripeness, squeeze them gently without bruising the skin. You are looking for peaches with just a tiny bit of give. Too much give and you'll have an unpleasant mushy texture with a faded sweetness. Too firm and it's like biting into an apple - some sweetness but none of the joy. For pre- and post- market snacking, you are conveniently located next to Calle del Laurel which hosts a number of tapas/pintxos bars in the afternoon/evening. For the mornings, head towards the cathedral in the centre of town. The main road leading up to the church (should be on your left if heading from the market) boasts a number of bars with an excellent selection of breakfast tapas such as bocadittos which are mini baguette buns filled with anything from ham to tortilla to scrambled eggs and chorizo. Delicious!

Great cheese recommendation from Charcuterie Ingrid (thank you!) but disappointed to get home and…read morefind that Carniceria Inma charged DOUBLE the posted price for chorizo (the stalls are very competitive so this was disconcerting- check your receipts - and buy from a different vendor)
