Thomas Downing Bridge - Under the bridge

If you suffer from "gephyrophobia", fear of bridges, the Downing bridge may help you conquer that…read morefear! Usually, I'm scared out of my "bridges" when I approach a bridge, whether I driving or a passenger, but this bridge gave me courage to "get over it". Although this is a steel stringer, narrow bridge with no shoulder, it's not too long nor too steep. It's just over a mile long, connecting Tappahannock and Warsaw. The water views across the bridge are quite pretty, especially nearing sunset. Cross the water, you'll see flocks of water birds resting on rustic pylons...they ap-"pier" to be herons, cranes, seagulls, and ospreys. If you pull over underneath the bridge by the Tappahannock side, you won't "egret" it. Weeping willows align the small field with a picnic area and there's a historic marker, a plaque and map describing the history of this part of the Rappahannock River. You can park and climb the rocks or even cast a line for fish. The Warsaw side of the bridge isn't quite so scenic. This bridge was named after a state senator, Thomas J Downing, who lived from 1867-1927. The bridge was constructed originally in 1927 which was a welcome change from the ferries that used to usher people across the River. Then in 1963, it was modernized to the bridge seen today carrying thousands of vehicles per day. As of an inspection in 2017, this bridge was deemed in poor-fair condition but needed some upkeep. Let's give this bridge some support!

It's bridge, y'all. It's arches up and over pretty high, but certainly not as high as many. I've…read morealways known it as the Tappahannock Bridge. It spans over the Rappohannock River, connecting the small town of Tappohannock to the even smaller town of Warsaw. Way back in the day, when we were invincible and clueless, aka, high schoolers, I had friends who seized that dubious double dog dare ya and went plunging into the river below. At night. All survived, but I would never recommend such folly. I know people who have bridge phobias. In my unprofessional opinion, I would rate this drive over as a level 4 on the anxiety scale (based on 1-10). Maybe a 5.8 if you are riding a motorcycle. * . If you are crossing over from the Tappahannock side, look to the tips of the barren trees on the right as you reach the end. You might catch sight of a Red Tail or an Eagle! Enjoy the views! *Felt this must be touched upon for those who might be triggered. You are welcome.

I love Essex Square, Lowery's restaurant which is a Tappahannock landmark (even though it's under new management), the Rappahannock River bridge, the sites in the downtown historic district and the gorgeous water views. The iconic DAW theater is a site! Love that stained glass. NN Burger has some of the best burgers and milkshakes in the Northern Neck. We just soaked up the local color and history here. This is a quiet place that's full of cool shops, great fishing spots, active wildlife(check out the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge) and cute B&Bs. The architecture ranges from Colonial to Victorian. I marveled at the old brick buildings and the adorable gingerbread houses. One of my favorite hidden finds is the giant gnarled 450+ year old basswood tree tucked away in the garden of the Essex Inn! It's an incredible thing to behold and one of the main reasons for visiting this tranquil, little charming town!

When you think of Tappahanock, not much comes to mind but there is a lot of history here…read more Tappahanock is the oldest town in Essex County, Virginia. This small town is located on the Rappahannock River. There are some restaurants that have been around for years! Parr's which is now closed use to have some of the best burgers, hotdogs and honestly what ever you can think of that a fast food would have but better. I never was a hot dog fan but man when I was asked to try one of theirs I was shocked....it was so good. Lowerys (new ownership from when I went) has been in the town since 1938 and still alive and serving folks. The original port of the town June Parker Marina, which use to transport Tobacco is still there as well. They do now have several new locations such as Los Portales (great Mexican restaurant), they have Walmart, and several other places. There have been some celebrity residents to the area as well. Stacy Tuff (former New York Jets running back's), William "Bill" Moore (blues artist), Chris Brown (R&B singer), Bill Dennis (NASCAR drover) and several more. This is again a small town but has so much history to go along with it. I like the suburbs or city life but I am always so happy to come back to the country for a slower pace of things! Sets you back with the earth because you can slow down and truly see the beautiful all around. If you get a chance to pass through take a moment and stop by, I am sure you will get welcomed in and smiles!

New owners ruined it. Me and my family have been coming to NN burger for years, like since 2015…read more When we came back eariler this year, the table service was terrible. Picking up your order from the counter was perfect, it was quick and the food was fresh. The table-side service they do now is a huge problem. Our food took forever to get to us, and it was cold and soggy. A minor problem that I wanted to point out is what they did to the fries. The famous twister fries are now two separate things, "twisters" and "chips". The only difference is that the "chips" are shorter; the difference is also not specified on the menu. It used to be that you ordered fries, plain and simple, and you would get a mountain of them. Now it's a confusing process to get them and what you end up with is a measly handful of cold and soggy fries. The live music is still great, but everything else just took away the uniqueness and excitement of this place. This place used to be the best burger place ever, very genuine and a local favorite. Now it is just a cheap tourist trap. Will not be coming again. TLDR; the table-side service takes forever and ruins the quality of the food, the menu adjustments are confusing and vague, and the new portion sizes are way smaller.

And since the star of the show is a burger, they did NOT disappoint. I had a classic bacon cheeseburger and enjoyed every last bite of it. In fact, it dork slapped me that I don't go to burger joints enough! If this spot was closer to me, I would definitely return more often. With them I had their fries. They were CLASSIC fries. Very good and perfectly prepared. If it had any downsides it would be that they ration your ketchup portion. With the prices these days I didn't appreciate that. The atmosphere was wide open and clean. Plenty of covered seating outside. And, best - they had plenty of good staff. Always the sign of a great management team. Pro-tip: They have their own parking lot and plenty of street parking around. However, there is a VERY busy intersection right next door which makes is stupendously difficult to leave in some directions. Take that into consideration on your planning: how to get away from the place.
