I have never gone into a…read morePenny's store intending to be a customer- last time was in Orlando and we got out of the car and walked through one to go into a shopping mall. The centre has some local flavour with some small independents trading like Mc Gettigan's bakery, Cafe Trax and the Oasis bar. It also has Tesco Costa and the usual suspects. I shot a brief video as I walked through and it was Jim Revees - one of my mum's favourite singers (she disliked old blue eyes intensely) and my friend Dee commented on how loud the music was. Yes Dee we are a singing nation and many folks were walking along singing along with Jim. Our wee nation has just spent thirty million euro on Garth Brooks concerts - 5 only in Dublin Summer 22 and we'll sing as much to him as he will to us. If this was transcribed to USA Garth would turn billions of dollars. I guess it pays to have friends in low places after all. Go Garth.

She promptly talked to security and instructed them to watch us even at the cash register. We were rather confused and soon came to the conclusion she believed we were stealing, when that simply wasn't the case. It was a very disrespectful and unsettling experience as she and the security followed us around the shop blatantly until we left through the machines at the exit. They expected the alarm to sound as we walked through but that did not occur because we simply did not steal or do anything that she claimed we did. In the very least it was satisfying when they had to stare at us as we walked out proving we didn't commit any robbery. I implore staff to think twice before following a group of young teenage girls that only wanted to go on a nice day out shopping and enjoying themselves.

It is a labyrinth with stairs up and down leading to small interconnected rooms full of delights. They serve good food and wonderful coffee. Now I usually dislike shopping (outside food and drink) but when I'm in a place as wonderful as this it's a different story. It's one of the few places that sells Chanel No 5 perfume - Chanel are careful as to who can trade their merchandise - 100ml £100. It had the remnants of a Black eye Friday sale that included men's shoes. I am fussy about shoes. I like proper soft leather, the touch and the smell - including leather on the soles and heels. Shoes that are strong and clench your feet - shoes that demand enthusiastic brushing and polish or as I was growing up spit and polish. Proper nails in the heels and great stitching are vital too. If it's made in China footwear or India it's not going on my feet. Period. I found a pair that were perfect. Fitted like they were especially made just for me. £200 down to £75 and wonderful and now mine. They will mould to the shape of my feet over time and will be so much better when they do. Old shoes are like old friends - comfortable to be with. These places are from another time and we must support them for as long as we can as to lose them means it feels like we lose a piece of ourselves.

Sadly, the building has lost most of its original features over the years like the old iron lift which has been ripped out and replaced with a modern lift. About one third of the ground floor is occupied by the massive toy department which I often find myself drifting towards whenever I walk through the doors. The other two thirds are reserved for clothing. They have managed to recruit some impressive brands and now boast Chuck Taylor, Nike and Vans to name but a few. If you go upstairs, you are greeted by more clothing but I never really notice this because my destination on this floor is always the excellent Trocadero Restaurant, which serves up a delicious meal for a good price. You can also dine in their conservatory which makes a good experience. In summer, I think they open up the balcony as well. The top floor only boasts the furniture department so I never really bother with that floor. I'm really proud of The White House for beating off competition from the likes of Debenhams and BHS, both of which had their eyes on this site. But they were never going to let that happen because they are such a strong independent company.

I don't think she shopped there in person but is reputed to have ordered linens from the shop in the late 1890s, and the Prince of Wales carried on the tradition in 1903. The biggest order The White House ever took was for twenty-six suits for His Highness the Rajah of Pudukota in South India in the early part of the last century. I was amazed recently to see that The White House was still going strong and to keep in step with modern trends it stock lots of the top selling high street brands in men's, ladies and childrens clothes. Long may this tradition shop keep up the standards and ethics of a small local business.
